Buying guide: Which type of grill suits you?
How much effort should lighting it take?
With gas and electricity, there is no need to light charcoal. The Broil King Regal 590 has five stainless steel burners with a combined 16 kW and a main grate of 80 x 48.8 cm. It runs on propane at 50 mbar; the bottle, for a maximum of 11 kg, sits in the lower cabinet and is not included. According to the instructions, you may only use it outdoors, with at least 76 cm clearance from combustible material and not under a combustible roof. The Landmann EG-II-590 heats electrically with 3,200 W and two separate zones, each in 50 °C steps from 100 to 300 °C. It specifies 60 cm clearance from combustible materials. Charcoal must not be burned in it.
If you want charcoal but no chimney starter, the Everdure HUB II is the example: a heating coil lights the charcoal, and the timer runs for 7 minutes. Without a socket, nothing works on it, and the German instructions forbid firelighters.
Kettle grill or kamado: What do you need besides direct grilling?
The Napoleon NK22K-LEG-2 is a kettle grill with a diameter of 57 cm and, according to the manufacturer, 2,356 cm² of grilling area. You add charcoal through the hinged inserts in the grate. For indirect cooking, the instructions provide for optional charcoal baskets, which are not included. The Monolith Classic (2.0) is a ceramic kamado with a Ø 44 cm grate. The parts for two zones are included, as is a smoking rail. A fan and controller for automatic regulation are not part of the package.
Our assessment: if you mainly grill directly, the simpler design is enough. For long cooking times at low temperature, only the kamado gives a duration, up to 24 hours according to the manual. Check the spot where it will stand for both. According to the product page, the Monolith weighs 84 kg with the frame, while the catalogue gives approx. 115 kg.
Do you want to cook low and slow?
Then you have three routes. The Weber Smokey Mountain Cooker 57 cm has two grates one above the other with, according to Weber, 4,683 cm² of grilling area. You manage the temperature by hand: according to the German manual, you check the temperature every 15 minutes, and the water level and charcoal every 3 to 4 hours. According to Weber, it is not ideal for searing.
According to the manual, the Monolith manages up to 24 hours at low temperature on 2.5 to 3 kg of charcoal. The Broil King Regal Pellet 500 works with presets: SMOKE 107 °C, BRAT/BACK 176 °C, GRILL 315 °C. It needs an earthed socket, the app requires an account, and the manual allows it only outdoors, not in a garage, shed, on a balcony or in other enclosed areas, because toxic fumes can build up indoors and lead to serious injury or death. Ask for the item number before you buy, because the 496051 and the Pro 496915EU both run under the name.
Where will the device stand?
Measure the space including the safety clearances. The Everdure HUB II is 1387 mm long and needs 250 mm clearance from combustible materials at the sides. The Landmann measures 121.5 x 57.5 x 116 cm when assembled. The Weber Smokey Mountain needs at least 1.5 m clearance from combustible material and must not stand on a table. For small city balconies, Weber recommends the 37 cm model.
Whether you may grill on a balcony at all is settled by your tenancy agreement and house rules. According to the English part of its instructions, the Ooni Koda 16 must not be used on or under balconies of residential complexes; the German translation does not contain the sentence.
Do you need a device just for pizza?
The Ooni Koda 16 is a pure gas oven for pizzas up to 16 inches, that is 40 cm. The L-shaped burner has 8.0 kW, according to Ooni it reaches up to 500 °C after 20 minutes, and a Neapolitan pizza takes about 60 seconds. It weighs 18.2 kg, has no built-in thermometer and does not do wood or charcoal. In our assessment, it complements a grill rather than replacing it: steaks and sausages are not what it is built for.
How this list was put together
We have not handled any of these products ourselves. The basis is our individual reviews, which rely on manufacturer information, operating instructions and retailer pages; where we make our own assessment, it says so there. The rating is our editorial rating made up of build quality, performance, handling and value for money, as described in the rating methodology.
For each category, we show here only the product with the highest overall rating among the newly revised reviews with an offer that was available for delivery on 21 October 2026. We earn a commission on purchases made through our links, and it varies in size depending on the shop; this has no influence on the selection.
