Weber Smokey Mountain Cooker 57 cm: Ø 57 cm, 2 rack levels

According to Weber, the Smokey Mountain Cooker 57 cm (item 731004) is the manufacturer’s largest smoker: a charcoal water smoker with two racks one above the other and 4,683 cm² of cooking area, weighing 35.38 kg, without wheels. Our assessment: Our assessment: The 57 is worthwhile if you regularly fill both racks, have a permanent spot outdoors and can stay nearby during cooking times of up to 12 hours. • According to the manual, you top up charcoal and water through the door at the front

Weaknesses according to our review:

Char-Broil Digital Smoker 2.0: Electric smoker oven with digital control

The Char-Broil Digital Smoker 2.0 costs approx. €458 and regulates the temperature digitally from 38 to 135 °C (product page: 37 °C). It has 4 adjustable stainless steel racks, a supplied probe and a smoker box that, according to the manufacturer, lasts for up to 8 hours. No new wood can be added during operation.

Our assessment: Our assessment: The smoker suits you if there is an earthed socket with an RCD where you will set it up and you would rather set temperature, time or core temperature than manage a fire. It needs supervision, does not cold smoke (control range from 38 °C) and does not allow new wood chips during operation; if you want to smoke without a socket, look at a charcoal smoker.

  • Temperature and time adjustable by button (38 to 135 °C, time up to 19:00); according to the manual the display can fluctuate by 5 to 8 °C
  • Cooking by time (up to 19 hours) or by core temperature with the supplied probe (target value 10 to 107 °C)

  • Cold smoking is not possible: according to the manual the control range starts at 38 °C, the product page states 37 °C
  • The smoker box must neither be removed nor refilled during operation; according to the manufacturer one filling lasts for up to 8 hours

MasterBuilt Digital Elektro Smoker 40-Inch: 40-inch electric smoker with digital control

The Masterbuilt 40-Inch Digital Electric Smoker heats with electricity and smokes with wood chips: four chrome-plated racks with 6,300 cm² according to the manufacturer, up to 135 °C, temperature and time on the digital panel, for approx. €329.99 (as of September 2026). According to the manual, use it outdoors only, with 3 m clearance from walls, never under a roof and not unattended.

Our assessment: Our assessment: The Masterbuilt suits you if you have 3 m of free space around the unit in your garden and a socket within cable reach, and you stay with the smoker during long cooking times. For a balcony, a terrace under an awning, searing above 135 °C or commercial use, it is the wrong choice according to the manual and the manufacturer’s page.

Strengths according to our review:

  • You set temperature and time on the digital panel, and a thermostat keeps the temperature even according to the manufacturer
  • According to the manufacturer, you can add wood chips through the side loading system without opening the door
  • Four chrome-plated racks with a combined 6,300 cm²; according to the manufacturer, room for 16 chickens or 8 racks of ribs

Weaknesses according to our review:

  • Outdoor use only: according to the manual 3 m clearance from walls, railings and overhead structures, never under a roof, carport or awning; therefore unsuitable for a balcony or terrace corner

Weber Smokey Mountain Cooker 37 cm: Ø 37 cm, 2 racks, 1,845 cm²

The Weber Smokey Mountain 37 is a vertical charcoal smoker with a water pan, two racks (1,845 cm² according to Weber) and four aluminium dampers, with which you control the temperature by hand. Weber Germany does not list it in its shop; whether the warranty and cover apply to the Amazon offer is unclear.

Our assessment: Our assessment: The 37 suits you if you want to smoke at a low temperature, have a permanent spot with 1.5 m clearance from flammable material and like to manage dampers, water pan and charcoal yourself. For regular sessions Weber recommends the 47; for steaks, a standard grill is the better choice.

Strengths according to our review:

  • Two plated steel racks with a combined 1,845 cm² of cooking area according to Weber; as an example Weber names a turkey and two layers of ribs at the same time
  • According to Weber, the water pan creates steam and keeps the temperature low and even; control via four aluminium dampers
  • Weber recommends the 37 for small city balconies; 79.8 x 37.4 x 37.4 cm with the lid closed according to Weber Singapore

Weaknesses according to our review:

  • Two racks with a combined 1,845 cm² limit the quantity; for regular sessions with family and friends Weber recommends the 47
  • Temperature controlled by hand via the dampers: the German manual provides for checks every 15 minutes, and for water and charcoal every 3 to 4 hours

Editorial score 8.3/10, buying route via Amazon. All data, sources and the FAQ are in the individual review of the Weber Smokey Mountain Cooker 37 cm.

ACTIVA Premium Gas Räucherofen: Approx. 10 kg, dismantlable tabletop smoker oven

According to the seller, the ACTIVA Premium Gas Räucherofen (gas smoker oven) weighs around 10 kg, can be dismantled and costs approx. €135. According to the seller, the large door should also make cleaning the inside easier. The seller says nothing about capacity, only the external size of 44 x 40 x 120 cm; gas connection, burner output and manual are missing.

Our assessment: Our assessment: The ACTIVA Premium Gas Räucherofen suits you if you are looking for a light smoker cabinet for the garden and clarify the open points beforehand: the seller does not state the gas connection, regulator or interior. For around €135 you get a unit that, according to the seller, can be dismantled and is easy to assemble. We would only plan on camping once the gas connection is clarified.

Strengths according to our review:

  • At approx. 10 kg about half as heavy as the Tepro Wichita (approx. 21 kg according to the manual)
  • Dismantlable according to the seller, so the individual parts can be cleaned separately
  • Large door, according to the seller for easier cleaning of the inside

Weaknesses according to our review:

  • Internal dimensions, number of racks and capacity are not stated anywhere, only the external size of 44 x 40 x 120 cm
  • Gas type, connection pressure, regulator and burner output are missing, and we could not find a manual

Editorial score 8.0/10, buying route via Amazon. All data, sources and the FAQ are in the individual review of the ACTIVA Premium Gas Räucherofen.

It costs approx. €196 according to our price box. tepro does not state the heat-up time, warranty or measuring range of the thermometer.

Our assessment: Our assessment: The Biloxi suits you if you want to grill and smoke in one trolley, have a permanent spot outdoors with the clearance from flammable material that tepro requires, and control the temperature by hand using two vents. It is the wrong choice for balconies without this clearance, for gas or electric convenience, and for buyers who want to read the warranty terms in advance.

Strengths according to our review:

  • Main chamber with its own height-adjustable charcoal grate for direct grilling, plus a side chamber for smoking
  • Main chamber approx. 58 x 40 cm with two cooking grates, plus approx. 58 x 21 cm warming area
  • Manual with concrete figures: fill quantities, ideal smoking temperature, burning in by stages

Weaknesses according to our review:

  • Lid thermometer only in the main chamber, measuring range and accuracy without manufacturer information; for doneness the manual requires a food thermometer
  • Temperature is controlled by hand via the air vent and the exhaust vent; tepro does not state heat-up time or burn time per filling

Editorial score 8.0/10, buying route via Amazon. All data, sources and the FAQ are in the individual review of the tepro Biloxi Smoker Grill.

Buying guide: Which smoker suits you?

Charcoal, electricity or gas?

This is the first decision, because it determines the effort involved. With the Weber Smokey Mountain 57, according to the manufacturer you control the temperature by hand using vent dampers, charcoal and water. Offset units such as the Landmann Vinson 300 and the tepro Biloxi have a side firebox and are controlled by hand using regulators and vents. If you would rather set than adjust, look at the Char-Broil Digital Smoker 2.0 or the MasterBuilt 40-Inch: electricity provides the heat, wood chips the smoke. The ACTIVA has gas in its name, but the seller states neither connection nor burner output. Our assessment: with gas, the smoke does not come from the fuel, so you need a second source for it; whether the ACTIVA comes with a tray for wood is not stated in the catalogue. With the water smokers, according to Weber the water pan stabilises the temperature, but you have to keep an eye on the water level: the German manual requires a check every 3 to 4 hours and hot water for topping up.

How much cooking space do you need?

Take the figures as a guide to the size class. Among the Weber trio, according to the manufacturer the cooking area rises from 1,845 cm² for the Smokey Mountain 37 to 3,103 cm² for the 47 and 4,683 cm² for the 57. For regular sessions with family and friends Weber recommends the 47. The MasterBuilt states 6,300 cm² on four racks. For the Landmann, the manufacturer states an 81 x 44 cm grate size in the cooking chamber; for the Biloxi it is approx. 58 x 40 cm of cooking area in the main chamber. Char-Broil does not state the area per rack. For the ACTIVA the internal dimensions are missing. Our assessment: Work it out from the food. Weber gives a turkey and two layers of ribs at the same time as an example for the two racks, and the MasterBuilt, according to the manufacturer, 16 chickens or 8 racks of ribs. So compare the number of racks and the area per rack with what you want to put on. Also consider what else you need: with the Weber, the lid thermometer measures the temperature in the cooking chamber and not in the meat, so a core temperature probe is an additional purchase.

How much time and supervision do you want to allow for?

Electric units take work off your hands, not responsibility. With the Char-Broil you set the time up to 19 hours, the display can fluctuate by 5 to 8 °C according to the manual, and the smoker box cannot be refilled during operation. With the MasterBuilt, the heating only starts once you have set a cooking time on the panel, and the manual allows operation only under supervision. With the Weber, the German manual provides for a glance at the thermometer every 15 minutes. Our assessment: the longer the cooking time, the more a unit whose rhythm fits your day is worthwhile.

Where may the unit stand?

Check this before buying, not afterwards. For the 57, Weber requires use outdoors only, never indoors: toxic smoke gases collect there and can cause serious harm to health or death. On top of that, at least 1.5 m clearance from flammable material. According to the manual, the MasterBuilt needs 3 m clearance from walls, railings and overhead structures and must not stand under a roof, carport or awning. The tepro requires 3 m from easily flammable materials. The Char-Broil runs outdoors only, not under cover and not in rain, with an earthed socket protected by a residual-current device. Weber names the 37 for small city balconies, but the 1.5 m clearance from flammable material is also in the shared manual for it. Whether charcoal is allowed on the balcony is a matter for your house rules and tenancy agreement. With its 3 m clearance, the MasterBuilt is unsuitable for a balcony or terrace corner.

Should the unit also be able to grill?

The designs are laid out differently. According to the manufacturer, the Weber is not ideal for searing. The Biloxi brings its own charcoal grate in the main chamber for direct grilling, the Vinson 300 a firebox with its own 39 x 39 cm grate. Both electric units reach 135 °C at most. Our assessment: if you want steaks and smoking equally, look at the offset units. If you want to change location, look at the weight, which varies greatly. For orientation: according to Landmann the Vinson weighs 68 kg, according to Weber the Weber 57 weighs 35.38 kg, and according to the seller the ACTIVA weighs around 10 kg. According to the manual, you must not move the Weber during operation. The Vinson stands on two wheels, but according to the Vinson 200 manual it must likewise not be moved during operation.

How this list came about

We have not handled any of these products ourselves. The basis is our individual reviews, which rely on manufacturer information, instruction manuals and retailer pages; where we make our own judgement, it says so there. The score is our editorial score based on build quality, performance, handling and value for money, as described in the scoring methodology.

This list includes only smokers whose review we have reworked and which were in stock on 21.10.2026 at at least one of our shops. Of these we show the 8 with the highest overall score, in this order. FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which smoker is best for beginners?

That depends on whether you want to manage a fire. With the [Weber Smokey Mountain 57](/reviews/weber-smokey-mountain-57/), Weber itself says that the interplay of charcoal and vent dampers takes some practice, and it advises a trial run without food. With the [Char-Broil Digital Smoker 2.0](/reviews/charbroil-char-broil-digital-2-0/) you set temperature and time at the touch of a button, but you need a suitable power socket.

Do I need electricity for a smoker?

For the electric units on the list, yes. According to its manual, the [Char-Broil Digital Smoker 2.0](/reviews/charbroil-char-broil-digital-2-0/) requires an earthed socket within reach, protected by a residual-current device (RCD) of no more than 30 mA. The [MasterBuilt 40-Inch](/reviews/masterbuilt-digital-schwarz-40-inch/) also needs a socket; neither the manual nor the manufacturer's page states its power in watts. With the Weber and the offset units, charcoal provides the heat.

Can I use a smoker on a balcony?

Your house rules and tenancy agreement decide that, and the manufacturers set tight limits. Weber requires the [Smokey Mountain 57](/reviews/weber-smokey-mountain-57/) to be used outdoors only, never indoors: toxic smoke gases collect there and can cause serious harm to health or death. According to its manual, the [MasterBuilt 40-Inch](/reviews/masterbuilt-digital-schwarz-40-inch/) needs 3 m clearance from walls and railings. You will find more in the buying guide under the question of where the unit may stand.

Can I also grill steaks with a smoker?

That depends on the design. Weber says the [Smokey Mountain 47](/reviews/weber-smokey-mountain-47/) is not ideal for searing and does not replace a standard grill. The [tepro Biloxi](/reviews/tepro-biloxi-2-grillkammern-raeder-thermometer/), by contrast, has its own charcoal grate in the main chamber for direct grilling, and the [Landmann Vinson 300](/reviews/landmann-vinson-300/) has a firebox with its own grate. The [MasterBuilt 40-Inch](/reviews/masterbuilt-digital-schwarz-40-inch/) reaches 135 °C at most.

Do I have to add wood or charcoal while smoking?

With the Weber, yes. For long smoking sessions, the German manual for the [Smokey Mountain 57](/reviews/weber-smokey-mountain-57/) provides for checking charcoal and water every 3 to 4 hours. With the [Char-Broil Digital Smoker 2.0](/reviews/charbroil-char-broil-digital-2-0/), the smoker box must neither be removed nor refilled during operation; according to the manufacturer, one filling lasts for up to 8 hours.

Which smoker holds the largest amount?

According to the manufacturers' figures, the [MasterBuilt 40-Inch](/reviews/masterbuilt-digital-schwarz-40-inch/) has the largest area on the list at 6,300 cm² across four racks, with room for 16 chickens or 8 racks of ribs according to the manufacturer. The [Weber Smokey Mountain 57](/reviews/weber-smokey-mountain-57/) states 4,683 cm² on two racks, and the [Smokey Mountain 47](/reviews/weber-smokey-mountain-47/) 3,103 cm². For the [Char-Broil Digital Smoker 2.0](/reviews/charbroil-char-broil-digital-2-0/), the area per rack is missing.

How reliable is the information on the Landmann Vinson 300 and the ACTIVA?

Thinner than for the other units. Landmann no longer lists the [Vinson 300](/reviews/landmann-vinson-300/) on its current brand page; our data comes from archived pages. For the [ACTIVA smoker oven](/reviews/activa-i-ein-einzigartiges-geschmakserlebnis-tischraeucherof/), the seller states neither capacity nor gas connection nor burner output, and we found no manual. Clarify these points before you buy.
