The Regal 590 is built by the Onward Manufacturing Company (OMC), a Canadian family business that, according to its own company history, has existed since 1906 and focused on Broil King grills in 1985. In the German manufacturer shop the grill is item 998282, in the assembly instructions model 9982-82. In our gas grill category it currently has the highest overall rating.
Construction: burners, grates, body
Five stainless steel dual-tube burners deliver 16 kW together; Broil King describes the burner principle as patented. Above them sits the Flav-R-Wave stainless steel vaporising system, five plates according to the spare parts list. According to the instructions, lava stones, ceramic stones or any vaporising system other than the built-in one are off limits.
On top go five Flav-R-Cast cast iron grates with a matt enamel finish, plus a stainless steel warming rack of 81 x 22 cm. Broil King gives the cooking area as 80 x 48.8 cm and the main grate area as 4,032 cm², although multiplying the dimensions gives only 3,904 cm²; further down we therefore calculate once with the manufacturer’s area and once with width times depth.
Control is via linear-flow gas valves with the 180-degree Sensi-Touch control. The knobs are illuminated, and there is a handle light; the parts list counts seven LED units and a battery pack (25080-80). Ignition is electric with Sure Lite, on the rear burner too, and the thermometer fitted is the Deluxe Accu-temp.
The lid is double-walled, black enamelled and has cast aluminium side panels. The lid handle, control panel and side shelves are stainless steel, accessory hooks hang on the shelves, and there are front shelves. The cart and doors are black powder-coated, the door handles stainless steel. The gas cylinder stands in the closed cart. Four lockable casters carry the grill, two of them height-adjustable.
The weight is 102.0 kg according to the product page. Its dimension drawing shows a height of 124.97 cm, a width of 158.75 cm and a depth of 63 cm, but judging by the file name it comes from the Regal S 590 Pro IR and shows a stainless steel lid. The dimensions are therefore only an approximation. The carton measures 67.3 x 101.6 x 61.6 cm according to the manufacturer.
Assembly follows the assembly instructions 20084-E78EU (Rev. W, 12/24) with an 11 mm spanner (7/16 inch); for the small parts, Robertson bits in sizes 2 and 3 are also shown. The grill must not be moved while in operation. Before transport you close the gas cylinder and remove it, take out the grates and Flav-R-Waves to save weight, remove the side shelves if necessary and wear gloves because of the metal edges. If you move the grill often or far, check all screw connections regularly, because they can work loose on uneven ground.
In detail: how much power arrives on each square centimetre
A kilowatt figure alone says little about the heat at the grate, because a larger grill also has to heat more area. Output per area is more informative. With the manufacturer’s area of 4,032 cm², the Regal 590 comes to just under 4.0 W per square centimetre, the smaller Regal 490 (13.2 kW, 3,226 cm²) to around 4.1 W and the Crown 590 Shadow (13.2 kW, 3,411 cm²) to around 3.9 W. These cm² values come from broilking.de. If you calculate width times depth instead, the three come to 4.1 W (Regal 590, 80 x 48.8 cm), 4.2 W (Regal 490, 65 x 48.5 cm) and 3.7 W (Crown 590 Shadow, 80 x 44.3 cm). Both calculations are ours.
That does not change the ranking: per square centimetre, the Regal 590 delivers slightly less output than the Regal 490 and slightly more than the Crown 590 Shadow. Its extra kilowatts therefore go mainly into the larger area. How hot a grate actually gets also depends on the lid and the weather. As a comparison figure between grills from the same manufacturer, the number is nonetheless useful in our assessment.
For the control settings, the instructions print guide values that apply to Broil King gas grills in general, each with the lid closed: HIGH approx. 370 to 400 °C, MEDIUM/HIGH approx. 320 °C, MEDIUM approx. 230 °C, MEDIUM/LOW approx. 200 °C and LOW approx. 155 to 175 °C. Wind and outside temperature shift the values. According to the instructions, you should use HIGH only to heat up quickly, in cold or wind with the lid open, to sear steaks before you lower the temperature, and to burn off residue before cleaning.
Five burners allow a direct and an indirect zone side by side; our guide to direct and indirect heat explains the principle. The manual describes indirect cooking like this: a drip pan stands in the middle above the Flav-R-Wave system, filled with 1 to 2.5 cm of water, and is never used without liquid. The outer burners run on a low to medium setting, and the middle one or ones can stay off; alternatively the manual names all burners on a low setting. If you grill without a drip pan, you must be especially alert to grease fires. You may remove the pan only once the grill is off and cooled down, because dripping fat is highly flammable.
Does the Regal 590 have an infrared side burner?
No. Next to the grill sits a 2.7 kW side burner that takes pots up to 23 cm in diameter and a maximum of 7 kg. Broil King fits an infrared side burner, then rated 3.1 kW, in the Regal S 590 IR and the Regal Q 590 IR.
Earlier versions of this page presented this differently, including a temperature of 800 °C that appears in the manufacturer’s documents for no Regal model. Both were wrong.
Among the 590s in the Regal collection, the Regal 590 is therefore the only one without infrared. The Regal S 590 IR shares the main burners, grate size and rear burner with it, but has a stainless steel lid with cast aluminium side panels and two stainless steel doors, and weighs 104.0 kg. In the Broil King shop it costs €2,799, €500 more than the Regal 590 there (as of 24.09.2026).
Rotisserie and rear burner
The rear burner delivers 4.4 kW and sits behind the food. Because the heat comes from behind, no flames form from dripping fat, according to the instructions. A spring holds it, so you can remove it when you do not need it.
Two rules restrict it. The main burners must not run at the same time as the rear burner, and the warming rack must come out before you switch it on. For the spit the MED/HIGH setting applies; the cooking grates may stay in place if there is enough room.
When buying, pay attention to the item number. The spare parts page names two variants for the Regal 590, 998282 and 998283, and lists the rotisserie motor only for 998282. For this variant, the rotisserie set and electric motor are listed as included on the product page.
Gas, installation and safety according to the instructions
Broil King assigns the Regal 590 a general manual for several series (20094-40DE/EU50, Rev. F, 01/22). Its table lists model 9982-82 with 23.1 kW, the sum of the main, side and rear burners. We reproduce the rules from it closely to the wording.
In Germany and Austria the grill runs on propane at 50 mbar, category I3P(50). You must never use an unregulated gas supply or a pressure regulator with a different working pressure. The cover page speaks of butane or propane, while the inner section and the country entry for Germany speak only of propane. We would therefore connect only propane.
The hose to the cylinder must be at least 600 mm long, must be neither twisted nor kinked and belongs away from hot zones and sharp edges. Check it for damage and brittleness at every cylinder change, and at least twice a year. If it is cut, abraded or otherwise damaged, the grill must on no account be operated. It is then replaced, and likewise if it does not comply with local and national standards.
You check for gas leaks on all fittings before first use, on the cylinder valve at every cylinder change and on the appliance every time a gas connection has been disconnected or reconnected. In doing so you do not smoke, stay away from open flames and always work outdoors. The procedure according to the instructions: connect the hose with pressure regulator to a full cylinder, all knobs to OFF, mix soapy water from one part water and one part liquid soap, open the cylinder valve fully and brush the solution onto all connections and fittings. For the side burner and rear burner, the connections between the orifice and the control valve are added; you hold the nozzle shut with your finger, turn the knob to HIGH and back to OFF. Bubbles indicate a leak. Then you disconnect the pressure regulator from the cylinder, refit it and check again; if the leak remains, you contact the retailer. With a gas leak, the grill must under no circumstances continue to be used.
You may use the Regal 590 only outdoors; it is not permitted in enclosed spaces. The instructions require at least 76 cm clearance to combustible material, including in front of large glass doors and window panes. It does not belong under a combustible roof, nor in the immediate vicinity of petrol, paints, flammable gases or other flammable liquids. Nozzles and openings for gas, flame and air must never be covered or closed. Broil King expressly warns against aluminium foil: covering slots, holes or openings at the front or bottom of the grill with it blocks the air supply and risks overheating and carbon monoxide poisoning.
Balconies are not mentioned anywhere in the instructions. Whether you may grill there is something to clarify with your landlord or property management; for a small balcony, the Regal 590 is in our assessment too large anyway, given its weight and dimensions.
If you smell gas, you turn off the gas supply to the appliance, extinguish open flames immediately and open the lid; if the smell does not go away, you call the retailer or customer service straight away. Ignition is done with the lid open, without leaning over the grill. To switch off, you first close the cylinder and then set the knobs to OFF; the gas supply at the cylinder is closed after every grilling session. Easily accessible parts can get very hot, which is why the manual advises keeping children away from the grill.
You never store the cylinder itself in the house, not in the cellar, not next to open drain pipes and not below ground. Propane is heavier than air and would collect near the ground in the event of a leak, where a spark or an open flame could cause an explosion. The container must never be exposed to high heat, because the pressure inside could otherwise rise above the safety limit.
Cleaning and care
The cast iron grates have a thin, matt enamel coating meant to protect them. Before first use and after a long idle period you wash them with a damp cloth and mild soap solution and dry them with a towel. The instructions rule out air drying and the dishwasher. Before and after every grilling session you brush the grates, with grill gloves when the grill is hot, and then check them carefully for stray bristles.
The grates can be used on both sides, so you oil both sides generously with cooking oil or release spray, right into the corners; you do not use salted fats such as margarine or butter. Then you heat for 10 minutes on a high setting, the oil burns in and forms a non-stick layer. So that it does not burn off, the instructions advise medium when preheating and grilling. You avoid marinades with sugar or salt before grilling, spices and salt are better added to the meat afterwards, you use oil-based rather than water-based marinades, and you rather brush the meat lightly with cooking oil before grilling. You turn and flip the grates regularly and keep them lightly oiled at all times, against corrosion, wear and sticking. If they rust anyway, you burn them clean, brush them with a stainless steel brush and re-oil. During longer breaks they are kept greased in a dry place, after which the oiling starts again from the beginning.
There is a conflict of aims here: for searing steaks the same instructions name HIGH, to protect the burnt-in oil layer they name medium. Our reading: HIGH only briefly for searing, otherwise medium.
Two heat programmes are easily confused. Burning off residue on the grate and Flav-R-Wave before cleaning is limited by the instructions to a maximum of 10 minutes on HIGH. Thorough burn-off, by contrast, takes approx. 15 to 20 minutes on HIGH with the lid closed, after which you first turn off the gas and then set the switches to OFF. On the cooled grill you scrape off the Flav-R-Waves with the grate lifter 60745 or a brush and vacuum out the interior. The grease tray sits under the grill body in a pull-out tray and should be cleaned regularly.
If something flakes off inside the lid, according to the fault table it is grease: the inside is neither painted nor coated and therefore cannot flake. A hard brush or a wooden scraper removes the layer. On the outside you wash stainless steel and enamel with water and soap solution; for polishing and against stains or rust, the manual advises stainless steel cleaner. Side shelves and plastic get mild soap solution. White oxidation spots on cast aluminium, on the Regal 590 the side panels of the lid, you wash off with mild soap solution, rinse and wipe over with an oil-soaked cloth. You touch up paint damage there with oven paint spray that withstands at least 400 °C. According to the instructions, rust on inner stainless steel parts does not affect performance.
At least once a year and after every break of more than 30 days, four jobs are due. You remove the burners and check them for cracks and damage, clean the venturi tubes with a pipe cleaner or venturi brush, remove the grease plates with the burners out and clean the interior, and you check the line and pressure regulator and replace them if necessary. Elsewhere the same manual reserves all maintenance to a qualified technician or customer service; if you do not trust yourself with work on burners, line and pressure regulator, you have it done there.
The venturi tubes are the delicate point. Spiders, insects and their nests can block them; the gas backs up and can ignite in the tubes, behind the control panel or at the side burner, even if the grill can still be lit. The instructions list as signs a smell of gas, too little temperature, uneven heating and thumping or bubbling burner noises, and the ignition instructions add flashback. Then you turn off the gas immediately and clean the tubes as the manual describes step by step. If it is already burning because of gas backup, you stop the gas supply immediately.
Warranty, spare parts and accessories
How long Broil King guarantees is answered differently by the product page and the manual. The graphic on the product page names 25 years on the grill body, 15 years on all other parts and 3 years on iQue, the control of the Regal Q 590 IR. In the 01/22 manual, by contrast, the warranty table for Imperial and Regal provides a lifetime, namely on stainless steel and porcelain enamel lid components, on die-cast aluminium and on the stainless steel lower housing. All other components in this table, including grates, Flav-R-Wave, dual-tube burners, side and rear burners, plus colour and paint finish, are listed there at 15 years. We advise asking the retailer for the terms in writing before buying.
The manual ties the warranty to conditions. It applies only to the first buyer who is a consumer, uses the grill privately and has registered on broilking.de within 24 months of purchase. It is not transferable and applies only if assembly, maintenance and care were carried out according to the instructions and installation according to building and fire safety regulations. Two years after purchase, in a warranty case you bear shipping and transport costs, removal costs for rebuilding, export duties, assembly costs for set-up and repair, and the cost of service phone calls yourself. According to the manual, the warranty does not restrict your statutory warranty rights against the seller or rights under product liability.
Not covered according to the manual are:
- Defects caused by accident, misuse, grease fire, environmental influences, improper modification, vandalism, faulty assembly, lack of maintenance, negligence or missing routine care
- Contamination and damage caused by insects or spiders, for example in the burner tubes, and by rodents such as martens
- normal wear
- Scratches, dents, paint damage, coatings, corrosion or discolouration from heat or abrasive and chemical cleaners, plus chipping on porcelain-coated parts and components used during installation
- Damage caused by force majeure or weather such as hail, tornadoes, earthquakes or floods
- Discolouration from chemicals, salty air or chlorine, for example next to a pool
- Faults arising from improper use or improper maintenance
- Chipping or cracks in the cast iron grates caused by incorrect use or lack of care
- Defects because the gas type was not observed during operation
- Grills used commercially or by state institutions, municipalities, multi-occupancy buildings, hotels, youth hostels, motels, restaurants or rental properties
Broil King GmbH decides whether to repair or replace. For replaced parts, only the remaining warranty period continues, and all warranty benefits are limited to the purchase price of the grill.
Broil King sells spare parts in its own shop with part numbers; for the Regal 590 there is a dedicated page with exploded diagram and parts list. As of 24.09.2026, a main burner (22929-103D) costs €29.90 there, a cast iron grate (22005-281, 48.9 x 15.7 cm) €49.90, the side burner assembly (10390-R81D) €42.29 and the rear burner (27906-354) €53.44. A complete set of grates would thus come to €249.50, five main burners to €149.50. According to the warranty terms, parts from other manufacturers lead to loss of the warranty. As accessories, the product page lists, likewise as of 24.09.2026, a cast iron wok insert for Imperial and Regal at €84.90, a cart organiser at €99.90 and a silicone cutlery holder at €39.90.
According to the manufacturer, Broil King gas grills are made in Waterloo (Ontario), Huntington or Dickson, from domestic and international components; certain parts come from China and Southeast Asia. The following is missing from all the Broil King documents we evaluated (product page, operating instructions, assembly instructions, spare parts list), or is stated there contradictorily:
- in which of the three plants the Regal 590 is made and since when it has been on the market
- a heat-up time to a given temperature
- a maximum temperature specifically for this model and the temperature of the side burner
- the material thickness of the cast iron grates
- the material of the rear and side burners in detail; the manual says only generally that Broil King burners are made of stainless steel
- whether the weight applies with or without packaging
- the height with the lid open and the working height of the shelves
- how many people the grate is enough for
- assembly time and number of helpers
- power supply, output and noise level of the rotisserie motor
- type and number of batteries
- whether the side shelves fold down
- the dimensions of the side burner and grease tray
- a cooking area that matches the grate dimensions: besides the 4,032 cm², the cooking area graphic also names 3,782 cm², and the 6,315 cm² with warming rack are more than the 5,818 cm² that the main grate and the 1,786 cm² of warming rack assumed there add up to
What else comes into question?
Three alternatives from our catalogue, each for a different reason:
| Model | The difference | Price | Our rating | Pick this one if |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Broil King Regal 590 (this one) | 5 burners with 16 kW, grate 80 x 48.8 cm, rotisserie with motor included, side burner without infrared | approx. €1,649 | 9.4 | you cook a lot at once and want to turn roasts on the spit without buying accessories |
| Napoleon Prestige 665 Connected | Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, LCD display and temperature probe, infrared side burner, grate 94 x 46 cm, rotisserie not included | approx. €2,499 | 9.3 | you want to follow the cooking chamber and core temperature on your smartphone |
| Napoleon Prestige 500 | 4 main burners, infrared side burner and infrared rear burner, rotisserie not included | approx. €1,699 | 9.1 | you do not need a spit and want to spend a little less |
| Broil King Crown 590 | 13.2 instead of 16 kW, grate 80 x 44.3 cm, cast aluminium body, rotisserie with motor included | approx. €967 | 9.0 | your budget is well below the price of the Regal 590 |
The prices are guide values from our price box and change; for the Regal 590 the price shown there is from Santos Grills. The technical data come from the manufacturers’ pages, for Napoleon on the Prestige 500 RSIB and Prestige 665 Connected RSIB, for Broil King on the Crown 590 Shadow. Our rating is an editorial assessment based on the data comparison; no measured values go into any of the four numbers.
When the Regal 590 suits you and when another grill does
We see the Regal 590 for you if your spot is big enough, that is, it allows for the width from our drawbacks and the depth from the last paragraph, and you will really use the rotisserie.
If you need infrared and no spit, the table leads you to the Napoleon Prestige 500. If you stay with Broil King, the Regal S 590 IR from the section on the infrared side burner is the alternative.
To the differences in the table, the Broil King Crown 590 adds its weight: it weighs 78.0 kg according to the manufacturer, 24 kg less. That matters if your spot cannot carry just any amount.
The grate of the Regal 490, which is not yet in our catalogue, is 15 cm narrower: 65 x 48.5 cm over four burners with 13.2 kW, plus a weight of 82.0 kg. The side burner and rear burner have the same 2.7 and 4.4 kW. On 24.09.2026 it cost €1,899 in the Broil King shop, €400 less than the Regal 590 in the same shop.
Add two items that the product page does not list as included: a cover and the gas cylinder. If you are still torn between grill types and sizes, you can go through the key points in the grill finder. And measure the spot: with the depth from the dimension drawing and the mandatory clearance from the instructions, the grill needs just under 1.4 m in front of a wooden wall.
