A stainless steel pan that replaces two grates
The Premium Plancha griddle plate does not sit on the grate. On the GRANT, according to Burnhard, you take out two grates and put the plate in their place, so it hangs in the cooking chamber where cast iron or stainless steel bars used to be. The rest of the grill stays grate.
That sets it apart from almost everything that counts as a plancha in our grill accessories category. A universal plate of 40 × 30 cm goes onto an existing grate, whatever the brand. This one is a component for specific Burnhard grills, and that is how Burnhard sells it: in its own shop under the accessories for the GRANT, for approx. €169 (as of September 2026). The product page showed the same amount including VAT on 20 October 2026.
Behind the shop is Burnhard GmbH from Düsseldorf. The plate is intended for gas grills. Charcoal does not appear in the documents.
Dimensions, weight and what the product photo shows
For the GRANT version, Burnhard gives 44.4 × 36.8 × 7.4 cm (width, depth, height) and a weight of 8.12 kg. These are outer dimensions. The rim, grease channel and tray are included in them, so you cannot read off a cooking surface from them, and the manufacturer does not quantify it either.
The plate is made of solid, ground stainless steel, which Burnhard calls rustproof and acid-resistant. The cooking surface is 4 mm thick. More important in daily use is another word from the product page: fully welded. The surface is closed, with no drain hole in the middle and no seams at the corners through which fat seeps downwards. It is meant to drain only one way, which Burnhard describes like this: excess fat runs over a small raised edge into the front grease tray.
The product image shows exactly that. A high wall stands at the back and on both sides. At the front, a crosswise ledge runs across the full width, and in front of it, set lower, sits a narrow pan, which is the tray. Each side wall has an elongated hole. The surface itself is matt and has no grooves.
The rim is all-round and, on the GRANT, between 2.5 and 4.5 cm high. It does not say where it has which height. Judging by the photo, it is highest at the back and slopes down towards the fat ledge, which fits the function: whatever is liquid should run to the front and not over the sides.
Two handles that hook in and out are included for carrying. The box also contains the grease tray and care and seasoning instructions.
In detail: how a closed stainless steel plate passes on heat
On a grate, heat reaches the food in two ways. The bars conduct it where the meat lies, and between them hot gases and radiation rise directly from the burners. On a plancha the second route disappears. A continuous layer of metal sits between flame and food, and everything that arrives at the top passes through that layer.
Three things follow from this that have nothing to do with Burnhard in particular. Small pieces no longer fall through: diced vegetables, prawns, onion rings. Burnhard explicitly names turning small pieces of food as a use. Then no fat drips onto the burners. That is how flare-ups at the grill mostly start, and a closed pan with a tray prevents that route by design. And the food cooks in its own juices instead of the juices being lost. Whether you want that depends on the dish.
Stainless steel is a compromise for such a plate. It conducts heat generally much worse than unalloyed steel or cast iron, roughly by a factor of three. So the heat travels sideways more slowly. Above a burner the plate gets hotter than in between, and on stainless steel this difference evens out less well. The 4 mm material thickness works against that: more mass stores more heat, and Burnhard writes that the steel stores heat reliably. If you put on cold food, the temperature drops less at that spot than with a thin sheet.
Our assessment: the zones above the burners do not disappear on this plate, but you can use them. You turn up the burner under one half and turn down the one under the other, and what is done waits on the cooler side. Which burners of the GRANT lie under the plate depends on where you place it.
The advantage of stainless steel lies elsewhere. Cast iron and unalloyed steel rust when the protective layer is missing, and therefore have to be seasoned and oiled. With this plate, seasoning is optional.
Does the plancha fit only the GRANT?
No. Burnhard writes on the product page that the Premium Plancha was designed for the FRED, EARL and GRANT series. How many grates you take out for it, and at which position it sits, depends on the model and the number of burners.
The name in the shop and the Amazon title name only the GRANT, so mix-ups are an obvious risk. For the individual series, Burnhard gives these details:
- GRANT: two grates out, plancha in their place.
- FRED series: the plate always goes over the bar burners and never over the infrared ceramic burner.
- FRED and Fat FRED: one large and one small grate out, leaving a gap of approx. 2.3 cm to the remaining cooking grate.
- Big FRED: two large grates out, an area of approx. 7.7 cm stays unused.
- EARL: two grates out, insert the plancha on the left, because on the right the ignition box of the rear burner is in the way.
- Big EARL: in the middle with two grates, at the far left with three grates (leaving a gap of approx. 17.6 cm), not at all on the right.
The dimensions also differ by series. For FRED Burnhard gives 41.9 × 39.6 × 6.6 cm, for EARL 43.5 × 39.6 × 6.6 cm, and the rim height for both is between 2.8 and 4.2 cm. Compared with the GRANT version, the plate is therefore deeper and flatter. Whether these are three different versions or one plate with three data sets is not clear from the product page; there is no selector for the series there. Before ordering, we would tell Burnhard’s service which grill you have and have them confirm which version will arrive.
If you are still comparing the grill itself, you will find our overview of the BURNHARD GRANT Base, the EARL with rear burner and the FRED Deluxe+.
Seasoning, cleaning, removing: what Burnhard prescribes
Burnhard’s sentence on seasoning: “The plancha can be seasoned, but does not have to be.” The advantage is said to be a higher non-stick effect, but it takes several passes. The steps are in the care instructions, a PDF that applies to Burnhard planchas in general and is not written specifically for the GRANT:
- Remove fat and production residue with hot water and a soft sponge.
- Rinse thoroughly and wipe dry.
- Brush thinly with refined cooking oil.
- Wipe off excess oil with a kitchen towel.
- Place the plancha on the grates, set the grill to 250 to 300 °C on direct heat (infrared ceramic burner on the lowest flame) and close the lid.
- Let it season for 30 to 45 minutes, then switch the grill off and let the plancha cool down completely.
- For an especially robust patina, repeat the steps from oiling to cooling once or twice.
That the PDF places the plate “on the grates” does not quite fit this model, which replaces two grates. We read step 5 as meaning that the plancha sits in its place in the grill. This reading is not documented.
The care instructions contain a CAUTION twice, both times with the same reason. The wording: “The plancha gets very hot, wear gloves when using it.” And: “The plancha gets very hot, only take it off the grill once it has cooled down.”
For cleaning, the product page describes two levels. The quick way: soak up fat with a kitchen towel, let the plancha burn off until no more smoke comes from the grill, and loosen residue with a grill brush or spatula. For a deep clean, you soak the plate in water with detergent and then clean it either with a wire sponge, in the dishwasher, or by hand with warm water and washing-up liquid. The grease tray can be removed and cleaned by hand or in the dishwasher.
The care instructions attach a restriction to the dishwasher: “NOTE: Thorough cleaning can remove the patina.” If you have seasoned the plate and then use a wire sponge or the dishwasher, you may have to start from scratch. Our conclusion: for everyday use the quick clean is enough, and the deep clean is for when something has burnt on. How to get the rest of the grill clean after a plancha evening is covered in the guide Cleaning a gas grill.
What Burnhard does not state
Our sources are Burnhard’s product page and care instructions, both read on 20 October 2026, plus the guarantee page and the Amazon catalogue. We did not find a separate instruction manual for the plancha, only the care instructions. We have never had the plate in our hands. The following remain open:
- the maximum permitted temperature (only the seasoning temperature of 250 to 300 °C is known)
- the heat-up time
- the usable cooking area in square centimetres
- the stainless steel grade, for example 1.4301
- material, dimensions and capacity of the grease tray
- the material of the carrying handles
- the weight of the FRED and EARL versions, as only a single weight is given
- the country of origin and manufacture
- how the plate sits in the GRANT if the grill has more or fewer burners
- whether the grease tray and handles are available individually as spare parts
The Amazon catalogue lists approx. 50.0 × 42.0 × 13.0 cm and approx. 7.94 kg. That differs from Burnhard’s values and, in our assessment, is the package. We go with the manufacturer’s values.

When this plancha, when a universal plate
Your grill answers the first question. If a FRED, EARL or GRANT stands in your garden, this plate is an option. For any other grill it is not, and what remains is a place-on plate whose manufacturer suits your type of grill.
The second question is what you want to grill at the same time. Because the plancha replaces only some of the grates, steak on the grate and vegetables on the plate sit side by side in the same grill. A universal plate that you put on the grate, by contrast, takes away exactly the area it lies on, and sits a few centimetres higher, so further from the flame.
Third: do you cook liquids? Fried potatoes with fat, gyros, fried eggs, fish in butter. For such dishes the high rim with the tray at the front matters more than any other property of the plate. For burger patties, a lot depends on the tools, which is why the HAVENHAUS set is in the table. How smash burgers are actually cooked is explained in the guide Grilling burgers.
Fourth, the sequence. According to the care instructions, you only take the plate out of the grill once it has cooled. If you want the full grate area back in the middle of the evening, you therefore have to wait. If you plan an evening where the plancha runs first and the whole grate is needed afterwards, we would reverse the order or leave the plate in from the start.
Then the money. For approx. €169 you get the plate alone at Burnhard. With the code BLACK there is a 27 per cent discount from 16 October 2026 to 30 November 2026 according to the product page, while stocks last. Even with this discount, the plate stays above the universal plates in the table. What else belongs to the basic equipment for a grill is sorted out in the guide Grill accessories essentials.
Who is it suitable for?
For owners of a Burnhard gas grill from the FRED, EARL or GRANT series who want to fry on the grill and not just roast. Burnhard also explicitly states that the closed surface can be used for deep-frying and frying in plenty of liquid, naming potato fritters and schnitzel. As a general rule: you smother burning fat with a lid and never put it out with water.
The wrong choice is the plate for anyone who has a grill from another brand or a charcoal grill. The same goes for anyone looking for a plancha for one weekend a year: then approx. €169 compared with approx. €57.99 for the Digank plate is a lot of money for a pan that stands in the shed most of the time.
