What is behind the name GRANT Base

At Burnhard, the GRANT Base is not a separate product line but a preconfigured set: the smallest of four ready-made configurations of the modular GRANT gas grill. Above it sit Upgrade, Pro and Station. What they all share is that cabinets, modules and burners can be added later, instead of you having to decide with your first purchase how big the outdoor kitchen will end up.

The Amazon number B0FBS5CDTK carries the model number 946659. At Burnhard, that is the article number of the Base with cast iron grates. Going by this match, anyone ordering through Amazon gets the cast iron version.

Amazon describes the size as “Compact without side tables & side burner”, and the product photo looks the same. On top, a black lid with a transverse handle bar; below it, a silver control strip with five knobs and a small display between the second and third knob. Five knobs fit four main burners and one rear burner; that is our reading of the picture. The base is a cabinet with two doors on casters. There are no shelves on the left and right.

The GRANT Base costs approx. €1,499 at Burnhard (Burnhard shop on 20 October 2026: €1,499, Amazon page on 20 October 2026: €1,649). In our comparison it scores 8.5 out of 10 and sits in the gas grills category.

Firebox, burners and grates

Under the lid sit four stainless steel tube burners at 3.5 kW each, with flame tamers above them that Burnhard calls W-Shape Flavor Bars. At the back wall sits an infrared ceramic rear burner with 3.7 kW. Together that makes the 17.7 kW that Burnhard states as total output. In the same output table on the product page, a further line “Total 35.4 kW” follows below, without any explanation. We work with 17.7 kW because only that figure adds up from the individual burners.

The firebox is double-walled and made of stainless steel, the body of galvanised steel with black powder coating. With the lid it gets blurry. The data sheet lists side parts made of stainless steel and die-cast aluminium, while the description text mentions lid sides made of die-cast aluminium. Which part is made of which material cannot be said for certain from this.

Ignition is via the Kickstarter ignition. According to the manual, this is a piezo ignition, one of its own per burner.

The four main grates of the Base are cast iron, and the manual describes them as enamelled. The coating is meant to protect against surface rust and stop food sticking to the grate. Stainless steel grates are available as an alternative for an extra charge.

For the area, the product page gives two measurements: 75 x 44 cm as the “main cooking area” and 72 x 41.5 cm as the “cooking area of the main firebox”. Mathematically, that is 3,300 or 2,988 cm². Which measurement describes the grate and which the interior remains open. Above hang two stainless steel warming racks, each 36 x 18.4 cm and height-adjustable. According to the manual, you choose the number and height of these racks freely.

Related to the area, the 14 kW of the main burners come to around 4.2 W/cm² (at 3,300 cm²) or 4.7 W/cm² (at 2,988 cm²). This figure describes how much gas burns per area. How hot the grate gets also depends on the lid, the double wall and the flame tamers, and the manufacturer gives no measured values for that.

In detail: air probe, display and rear burner

The GRANT Base has no lid thermometer. Instead, an LED display that Burnhard calls “Ultra Bright” sits in the control strip, with three measuring zones. The cooking chamber temperature comes from a fixed-mounted air probe. According to the manual, it measures directly above the cooking surface, between the warming racks. For the food, two probes are included, up to four can be connected, and they withstand up to 380 °C. The third zone is the heat at the grate: for that, Burnhard sells its own burner zone probes, heat-resistant up to 700 °C. According to the manual, you must not immerse them in water; you can clean them with a damp cloth.

What is interesting is how Burnhard handles the difference from the classic thermometer. The manual argues as follows: grilling recipes are generally written for grills with a lid thermometer, and their display tends to read higher than the actual measured temperature that the GRANT sensor shows. That is why the display contains software that calculates a virtual lid temperature. From the factory you see the measured value. If you hold both buttons of the display for 5 seconds, the display switches to the simulated lid value.

This has a practical consequence for you. If a recipe says “indirect at 160 °C”, then by Burnhard’s logic a lid reading is meant, and with the factory setting you would run the grill hotter than the recipe author. We would use the simulated reading for recipes and stick to one of the two settings for your own notes. The manual does not describe how the calculation works.

The timings in the manual fit this. According to the manual, the displayed cooking chamber temperature is only reliable after about 15 minutes of operation, and it also gives approx. 15 minutes with the lid closed as the preheating time; in the energy-saving tip it is 10 to 15 minutes, except for first use. Burnhard puts the grilling range in which the GRANT works best at 250 to 370 °C.

The rear burner follows its own rules. Burnhard recommends not running it at the same time as the main burners, because otherwise overheating and damage are a risk; the product page additionally includes the infrared ceramic burner in the cooking chamber. As a use, the manual names the rotisserie, for example. In strong wind it stays off, as it does when fatty food is lying on the warming racks. So in operation the 3.7 kW never adds to the 14 kW.

For indirect cooking, the four main burners are the lever. The basic principle with gas grills is: you leave some of the burners running and place the food over the switched-off ones, with the lid closed. With four burners side by side, this works in several arrangements, for example outer on and inner off. How the methods work together is explained in our guide on direct and indirect heat.

Is the modular system worth it if you never expand?

Rather not. Without expansion, the GRANT Base is an 84 cm wide four-burner without shelves, for which you pay approx. €1,499 in our price box. The Big EARL 4-burner costs exactly the same there and comes with side tables and an infrared side burner.

What you are actually buying with the premium for the system is three building blocks. The FitnFire system lets you swap the burners without tools; as burner types, Burnhard names stainless steel tube burners, cast burners and infrared ceramic burners. About the infrared ceramic burner, Burnhard writes that it reaches up to 900 °C. This figure applies to the optional burner; for the built-in rear burner it is not stated there. On the category page there are also an XXL infrared ceramic burner with 8 kW as a Click-In module and a 3.5 kW Longlife Premium cast burner.

The second building block is the Click-In modules, which are sold separately and receive their gas via the EasyConnect forwarding system. According to Burnhard, all preconfigurations can be expanded later, with cabinets, Click-In modules, burners or accessories. According to the manual, you only fit or remove gas-carrying modules when the grill is switched off. Accessories may only be used on the GRANT, and on the grill itself only original accessories.

Third, the base cabinet. The Base comes with two doors and a shelf. Later you can fit three soft-close drawers in place of one door. That also changes the weight: Burnhard gives the base cabinet with doors as approx. 33 kg and the version with drawers as approx. 40 kg.

In our assessment, the Base is mainly worth it for two groups. For people who want the full build-out but do not want to pay for everything in one year. And for people who for now only need a four-burner on a narrow footprint and want to keep the path open. The GRANT Pro with the same firebox, two side cabinets, side burner and cutting board module costs approx. €2,849 in our price box, the Base approx. €1,499, and it is 168 cm instead of 84 cm wide. Whether a Base can be brought step by step to exactly this specification and what that costs in total, Burnhard does not work out anywhere.

Setting up, gas and space requirements

Burnhard gives the Base as 84 cm wide and 55 cm deep. With the lid closed it is 125 cm high, open 156 cm, and the cooking surface sits at a height of 97 cm.

On top of that come the clearances from the manual, and they are generous. The grill radiates heat and never belongs directly against glass fronts, walls or plants. To objects of any kind, 100 cm each remain free to the back, the sides and upwards. To combustible materials the manual requires at least 1.5 m, to flammable liquids 7.5 m. Counting only the 100 cm, the Base needs a free area 284 cm wide and 155 cm deep, not counting the space where you stand yourself. If there is a wooden wall at the back, the larger value applies. Upwards, we would measure from the opened lid, which gives 2.56 m to an awning or a roof.

The ground must be level, stable and fireproof. You compensate for small unevenness with the height-adjustable casters and align the grill with a spirit level. Before every use you fix it with the locking brakes (the manual warns of a crushing hazard here), and before moving it you return the casters to their starting position. It is not moved during operation. Before every change of location you switch it off, close the bottle valve and unscrew the bottle. By our addition, the firebox and base cabinet with doors together weigh approx. 71 kg. According to the manual, assembly is done by two people, on a mat and with safety gloves, because some edges are sharp.

The GRANT Base runs on butane (G30) or propane (G31). According to the manual, natural gas is not permitted, nor are charcoal, briquettes and lava stones. The hose is pre-fitted, CE-approved and at most 1.5 m long. Attached to it is a fixed-setting pressure regulator to DIN EN 16129 and DIN EN 16436-1 (standards that apply in Germany and the EU) with 50 mbar operating pressure and a maximum of 1.5 kg/h. This 1.5 kg/h is the regulator’s upper limit, not a consumption figure for the grill.

The bottle stands in a holder in the base cabinet; which sizes fit is covered in the questions below. It is connected with the union nut on the pressure regulator, which you tighten with a spanner, and the quick coupling sits on the grill. The hose must not touch the firebox and must not run under the grease tray. Then comes the leak test: spray all sealing points with leak detection spray or brush them with soapy water in the ratio of 1 part soap to 3 parts water, then open the valve. If bubbles rise, close the valve, retighten the nuts on both sides by hand and repeat. If it does not stop then, the valve stays closed and you go to a specialist dealer. You repeat the test after every bottle change. More on sizes, exchange and storage is in the guide gas bottle for the grill.

The bottle is stored outside the grill base cabinet, disconnected, with the protective cap on, upright and at less than 50 °C. Escaping liquefied gas is heavier than air and sinks to the floor, so the bottle does not belong in the house, not below ground level such as in a cellar or underground car park, and not in any unventilated place. You do not store spare bottles under or next to the grill. Whether a balcony is an option is not expressly regulated by the manual; what usually applies there is summarised in the guide grilling on a balcony.

Cleaning, care and safety according to the manual

Before first use you burn in the main burners for 20 minutes without food so that preservation residues disappear. The cast iron grates are seasoned separately: grease them completely with a refined oil or fat with a high smoke point, on no account olive oil or whey products. Then insert the grates, set the main burners (not the rear burner) to HI and burn in for 45 minutes with the lid closed.

Cleaning happens after every use. For that, all burners except the rear burner run on HI, the lid stays closed, and the flames burn for 15 to 30 minutes until no more smoke rises. Then you brush off the cast iron grates; according to the manual they need no further care as a rule, but re-greasing is advisable. On brushes, Burnhard distinguishes: brass is very soft, needs little force and protects the patina of the cast iron grates. Stainless steel brushes are effective and durable; with too much force they remove the patina. Stainless steel grates tolerate vigorous brushing, just not steel wool, because remaining particles attract surface rust. The stainless steel grate may go in the dishwasher. According to the product page, you care for cast iron grates by hand and treat them with oil.

Before every cleaning you remove the gas bottle, disconnect the power adapter, take off any connected power bank and wait until the grill has cooled down enough. Flammable cleaning agents are off limits. You pull out the grease tray and dispose of the grease in an environmentally responsible way. It can be taken apart into individual pieces, which Burnhard calls EasyClean. Aluminium foil or aluminium trays on the grease drain plate or grease tray are forbidden, because food residues can collect in them and ignite. Before every use the tray must be empty.

You wipe stainless steel surfaces with a damp cloth or rinse them hot, with mild detergent if needed, rinse with water, let everything dry and then treat them with stainless steel care product. Microfibre cloths can scratch the material, and residues of the stainless steel cleaner must be completely gone before the next grilling. On the rear burner the ceramic stone does not need cleaning, the cover may go in the dishwasher; to burn it clean it runs on HI for 15 to 30 minutes, with the main burners off.

Every 3 to 4 months or after long idle periods, a deep clean is due. Then the flame tamers, burners, heat reflector plates and the inner plates of the firebox come out. According to the manual, you may also put the plates in the dishwasher or rinse them with a pressure washer and then dry them thoroughly; from the burners you remove food residues with a brush. You do not exceed the cleaner’s contact time, otherwise the material can discolour. A blocked nozzle or venturi tube you clear with a needle or a pipe cleaner. The sequence step by step is in the guide cleaning a gas grill.

On safety, the manual is clear. The grill may only be used outdoors, never in a building, a garage or any other enclosed area. It stands sheltered from the wind, is never left unattended during operation, and children are forbidden from using it. You wear protective gloves as soon as the hot components exceed the ambient temperature by 50 °C. You do not lean over the open grill, neither when igniting nor when grilling.

If you smell gas, you shut off the gas supply, extinguish all open flames and open the lid. If the smell persists, you move away and inform the gas supplier or fire brigade; a leak test according to the manual follows afterwards. In case of fire, you move bystanders to safety and, if possible, close the bottle valve. You try to stop a grease fire by switching off the burners and close the lid until the fire is out; you never extinguish oil or grease fires with water, but with a grease fire extinguisher or fire blanket. You cool the gas bottle with water and take care of yourself while doing so, because a spontaneous, explosive re-ignition is possible. Filled pressurised gas containers are removed from the fire-risk area or sprayed with water from a protected position. You keep your distance from the fire and call the fire brigade immediately.

Warranty, and what Burnhard leaves open

Burnhard gives ten years from the purchase date on the GRANT, without registration, against defects in material and workmanship. Whether it is repaired, a spare part is sent or the unit is exchanged is Burnhard’s decision, and for a justified claim the manufacturer bears the costs of shipping in and back. Geographically, the promise applies to Germany and Austria, and to consumers under § 13 BGB (the German Civil Code) who are first buyers and can prove the purchase.

The list of exceptions is long. Excluded are the burners, namely stainless steel tube burners, infrared ceramic burners in the FitnFire system, the infrared ceramic burner for the rear burner and the Click-In XXL infrared ceramic burner. Also the flame tamer as a wear part. And the entire electronics: display and cable unit, cooking chamber temperature sensor, probes, control unit, plug-in power adapter as well as USB-C connection and cable unit. What the configurator lists as accessories, such as griddle plate, plancha, smoke box, rotisserie spit or power bank, is likewise excluded, even if GRANT is in the name. Our assessment: the ten years therefore mainly concern the firebox, lid and body, not the parts that are most heavily stressed on the grill. The terms in version 1.2 of 6 January 2025 also list grounds for exclusion in case of improper handling, which you should read before buying. The statutory warranty of two years (legal liability for defects under German law) applies alongside.

Burnhard gives no information on: gas consumption in grams per hour, a maximum temperature of the firebox, gas category, nozzle sizes and CE identification number, the total weight as a single figure, the meaning of the line with 35.4 kW, the country of manufacture (only “developed in Germany” is documented), wall thicknesses, the material of the flavor bars and grease tray, the stainless steel grade, a preheating time to a specific temperature, the power data of the power adapter, the exact hose length, an assembly time, a commitment on how long spare parts are available, a rule for balconies and its own note on carbon monoxide (the manual forbids enclosed spaces without mentioning CO). We have not collected prices of the Click-In modules for this comparison.

Three alternatives to put alongside it

Model The difference Price Our rating Choose this one if

BURNHARD Big EARL 4-burner ready-made grill with side tables and infrared side burner, 152.5 cm wide approx. €1,499 8.7 you need shelves immediately and do not plan any expansion

Broil King Regal 590 5 main burners, 80 x 48.8 cm, side burner and rotisserie set included, not modular approx. €1,649 9.4 you often grill for big groups and want everything in the box straight away

The prices come from our price boxes and change constantly. The rating is our editorial assessment from the data comparison; we measured nothing ourselves.

When the GRANT Base fits and when another grill does

Start with the spot, not the brochure. The 84 cm width sounds like a balcony, but the clearances in the manual turn it into an area of almost three metres. Anyone without that space is not buying a small grill with the Base but one that stands too close to a wall or railing.

Then the question of expansion. If you seriously plan it, the Base is the cheapest entry into the system. If you do not, you pay for expandability you never use and give up shelves that come with the Big EARL at the same price. Without a side table you also need an extra table for plates and tongs.

In your budget, include the cover, because it is not in the box, plus the bottle and the first fill. The Broil King Regal 590 stands at approx. €1,649 in our price box, the GRANT Base at approx. €1,499, and it has five main burners on a larger area, a side burner and a rotisserie set. In our assessment, anyone who regularly grills for big groups and has a permanent, wide spot is better off with it. At Amazon, the Base is priced higher than directly at Burnhard according to our price box; because of the warranty terms we would buy from the manufacturer anyway, or ask beforehand.

In favour of the Base is the temperature measurement. If you like cooking by core temperature, you have two probes and the cooking chamber display from the factory and can expand to four probes. If you would rather grill by feel and get annoyed by a display that ticks differently from the recipe, you will find less friction with a classic lid thermometer.

We would not choose the GRANT Base for a small balcony or a rented terrace under a wooden roof, because the clearances of 100 cm upwards and 1.5 m to combustible materials can rarely be kept there. Undecided between gas, charcoal and electric? The grill finder gives you a first shortlist.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about BURNHARD GRANT Base Modularer Gasgrill

Short, clear answers about buying, using and caring for BURNHARD GRANT Base Modularer Gasgrill.

What is included in the box, and what costs extra?

Included are the firebox with four tube burners, the rear burner, four flavor bars, four cooking grates and two warming racks, plus the display, two probes, the air probe, control box, power adapter, grease tray, gas bottle holder and the hose with 50 mbar pressure regulator. The cover is missing because, according to Burnhard, there are different ones depending on the setup; on the product page it costs €109 extra. Freight shipping (Dachser) costs €29 there and takes 2 to 4 working days, and you can return the grill within 30 days.

Cast iron or stainless steel grates: what does the difference cost?

According to the product page, €50 extra for stainless steel; this variant is listed in the Burnhard shop under article number 946660. With the cast iron grates you should know that the warranty terms list surface rust and the enamel on cast iron grates among their exclusions. Surface rust on a cast iron grate would therefore not be a warranty case. There is also an inconsistency: the FAQ on the product page speaks of grates made of rust-resistant stainless steel, while the description and data sheet of the Base name cast iron.

Does the warranty also apply if I buy through Amazon?

You cannot tell for certain from the terms, so ask Burnhard beforehand. The terms require that you did not buy the grill from a seller other than Burnhard; as an example they name a second-hand purchase from another consumer. Whether a purchase through Amazon falls under this is not stated there. You can reach Burnhard on the free hotline 0800 270 70 27 for Germany and Austria or by email at service@burnhard.de.

Which gas bottles fit in the base cabinet?

Bottles of 5, 8 or 11 kg. The manual gives the dimensions: 5 kg at 420 mm height and 200 mm diameter, 8 kg at 505 mm and 229 mm, 11 kg at 600 mm and 300 mm. Plastic composite bottles are not permitted in the base cabinet because their size would put them too close to the grease tray. For those, you route the hose outwards through the cut-out in the side wall and connect the bottle outside the grill.

Does the GRANT Base need electricity?

Yes, the display with the probes runs on the supplied power adapter or on a power bank. The adapter belongs on an earthed socket with alternating current as stated on the rating plate, and the manual permits only the type XY24SE-120200VQ-ET. You unwind the cable completely before use. In mains operation you can, for example, charge a smartphone at the free slots of the USB-C module. After grilling, you switch the display off with the power button.

When do the hose and pressure regulator need to be replaced?

After ten years at the latest, even if nothing is visible on the outside. Before every use, according to the manual, you check both for cracks and damage, and the hose additionally for porous spots and cuts. The gas system should be routinely inspected at least once a year, and repairs on it belong in the hands of authorised specialist staff. The manual is inconsistent on the spare part number: it gives 946212 and elsewhere 946571, so ask when ordering.

How do I get the GRANT Base through the winter?

According to the manual, in a frost-protected, dry room, with the lid closed and the cover on. You may only store the grill indoors if the gas bottle has been disconnected and removed. You take the cast iron grates into the house over the winter season so they do not develop surface rust. The power adapter can go into the base cabinet, for example. After the break, you check the insect and spider screen at the venturi tube of the main burners and clean it with a brush.

What should I do if a burner does not ignite?

Try several times, then stop and wait. According to the manual, you wait 3 seconds and turn the control knob a little further until the piezo ignition clicks; if that does not work, you repeat it 3 to 4 times. If the burner still does not ignite, you turn the knob clockwise to OFF, close the bottle valve, wait 5 minutes and start again. The lid stays open when you ignite; an open flame as an ignition aid is off limits.
