Our assessment: The Pasadena suits you if you want to grill steaks, sausages or vegetables openly over the embers and have the necessary clearance in a garden. If you want to cook under a lid or read the temperature, you need a different model. The source is the manual, version 2014; we did not find a manufacturer page for the Pasadena.

The tepro Pasadena 1030 is an open charcoal grill trolley: fire bowl, wind shield on three sides, two hang-in grates, bottom shelf, two wheels. It has no lid. At approx. €77 (Amazon, as of September 2026), it is in our charcoal grill category a grill for open, direct heat without a closed cooking chamber.

We have not handled the Pasadena and have not grilled anything on it; we compare data. The data comes from the instruction manual of tepro Garten GmbH (version 2014, 12 pages, German only, as a PDF at an online retailer), from the Amazon catalogue entry for ASIN B004L6GJV8 and from the product photo. We did not find a manufacturer page for the Pasadena: when we checked in October 2026, tepro.de redirected to an unrelated company, and testritetepro.de shows no products. A newer, bilingual manual (version 2017) was available to us only as a summary; grilling area and charcoal limit match there, but whether clearances and warnings have changed is unchecked. Our own calculations and assessments are marked as such.

What is in the box, and what is missing

According to the manual (p. 4), the delivery includes two grill grates with four handles, the fire bowl, a wind shield in three parts (left, back, right), two metal frames, one of which is intended for the wheels, the bottom shelf, two wheels, a side handle and the fixing material. A lid, a cover or a thermometer does not appear in this list.

The photo shows a rectangular bowl on a narrow frame. At the back and on the narrow sides the wind shield rises up; at the front no such part can be seen. Two bars protrude from each narrow side, presumably the four handles; they sit at two different heights, so the grates hang at different heights (our interpretation from the photo and the delivery contents). The wheels are on the left narrow side; on the right the frame ends in a foot with a bar handle next to it, probably the side handle from the list.

Amazon lists the colour as silver. Silver says nothing about the material: the manual speaks of a heat-resistant paint on the outside that bakes in during the first firing.

Dimensions, weight and grilling area

Assembled, the Pasadena measures approx. 84 × 52 × 90 cm (W × D × H) according to the manual; the Amazon catalogue agrees with 84 cm width, 52 cm length and 90 cm height. On weight the sources differ: approx. 12.7 kg in the manual, 26.32 pounds (approx. 11.9 kg) in the catalogue, where it stays open whether the grill or the packaging was weighed. We use the manual’s figure. The working height of 76 to 88 cm comes solely from the Amazon listing.

The manual gives the grilling area as 2 × approx. 58 × 20.5 cm, together approx. 58 × 41 cm or, by calculation, 2,378 cm². So there are two narrow grates, each 58 cm wide and 20.5 cm deep, hanging side by side at the front and back. Such an area includes the gaps between the bars. As fuel quantity, the technical data (p. 10) give 2 kg at most.

In detail: wind shield, grate height and heat without a lid

Without a lid, a charcoal grill has two adjustments for heat: how much charcoal glows and how far the food is from the embers. The manual describes no air control. The radiant heat of the embers decreases with distance, so the grate height controls how hot the food gets. According to the manual, the grates hang from holders on the left and right wind shield; the side parts are therefore screen and grate carrier in one. The Amazon listing mentions four height levels.

The manual requires the glowing charcoal to be spread evenly in the bowl. Two grate heights therefore do not give one zone with embers and one without, but two distances from the same embers. An indirect zone like under the lid of a kettle grill does not arise this way. How both kinds of heat work is explained in the guide Using direct vs. indirect heat correctly.

On the wind shield, Amazon writes that it protects against wind and reduces flying ash and sparks. The height of the parts and the effect on embers or temperature are not quantified anywhere. Wind feeds the embers with oxygen, so they burn hotter and burn down faster. A screen slows that only where it stands, on the Pasadena at the left, back and right; at the front, where you stand, none is provided according to the delivery contents. We would therefore set the grill up so that its back faces the main wind direction (our conclusion). For lighting, the manual requires a wind-protected area and does not equate it with the grill’s own wind shield.

Assembly and first firing

For assembly you need a Phillips screwdriver and an adjustable spanner, and according to the manual a flat work surface of two to three square metres. The manual advises allowing time; handles and other small parts may be pre-assembled.

Assembly runs in these steps: wind shield left, back and right to the fire bowl with M6x10 screws, the two metal frames to the bowl with M6x35 screws, the bottom shelf to the frames with M6x35 screws. The wheels go on the wheel frame and are secured with M8 lock nuts, the side handle is screwed to the metal frame, the handles to the grates with M5 screws.

After unpacking and before each use, you check the grill for damage; with damage it is not used, and you notify the retailer, likewise for missing or defective parts. The manual does not accept complaints after assembly has been completed or begun. So look in the box before you pick up the first screwdriver.

Before first use, you wash the grates in warm washing-up water. Then you fire the grill for at least 30 minutes at 100 to 200 °C; according to the manual, this makes the inside ready for grilling and bakes the heat-resistant paint on the outside. A thermometer to check the 100 to 200 °C is not included.

To light it, you take out the grates, place 3 to 4 solid firelighters in the middle of the bowl (follow the notes on the packaging) and ignite them with a match. Around the firelighters you stack charcoal, 2 kg at most. Once it is glowing through, you spread it evenly in the bowl with fireproof tools with a long, fireproof handle and hang the grates in at the desired height.

Safety and care: what the manual prescribes

We reproduce the safety notes on pages 4 to 6 in full, sorted by topic and in our own words; the numbers are unchanged, the order is ours. According to the manual (p. 10), the Pasadena meets the applicable European and national directives (DIN EN 1860-1; this standard applies in Germany and the EU).

  • The grill is intended for heating, cooking and grilling food, exclusively for outdoor use and only for private use. Any other use counts as improper and can lead to damage to property or injury; the manufacturer is not liable for this.
  • It must not be used in enclosed spaces: burning charcoal and briquettes produces carbon monoxide, which is odourless and deadly in enclosed spaces.
  • For lighting and relighting, neither methylated spirits nor petrol come into question. Dry firelighters or special liquid grill lighters are allowed, in each case to EN 1860-3 (a standard that applies in the EU). Flammable liquids on the embers cause flash fires or deflagrations, so neither lighter fluid nor charcoal pieces soaked in it belong on the embers. Lighting is done only in a wind-protected area.
  • At most 2 kg of charcoal or briquettes are filled in. During operation the grill is never left unattended, and the ash is tipped out only when the charcoal has burnt out completely and cooled down.
  • The ground must be flat, level, secure, heat-insensitive and clean. From highly flammable materials such as awnings, wooden decking or furniture, a minimum clearance of 1 m applies. The grill is not placed near entrances or heavily used areas; children and pets stay away.
  • Glowing charcoal and grill parts become very hot and can start fires; a fire extinguisher and a first aid kit should therefore be within reach. Some foods produce flammable fats and juices, so the grill is cleaned regularly, ideally after each use.
  • In operation the grill becomes very hot and must be neither moved nor transported. Before cleaning and before putting it away, it cools down completely.
  • Grill, charcoal and food can cause severe burns on contact. You keep your distance from hot parts, always wear grill or oven gloves while grilling and use only long-handled tools with heat-resistant handles. Clothing with wide sleeves is out.
  • The grill is not intended for persons (including children) with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities or without experience and knowledge; they are to be made aware of the dangers and supervised by a person responsible for their safety. Anyone who is unfocused or tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication does not use it. Distraction can cause you to lose control, so the manual demands the greatest care when grilling.
  • Modifications to the product are forbidden and a major safety hazard. For damage, repairs or other problems, you contact the service or a local specialist.
  • Children must neither play with the packaging film (suffocation hazard) nor put small assembly parts in their mouths (choking and suffocation hazard). The grill and individual parts partly have sharp edges; handle them carefully and wear protective gloves if necessary.
  • Paint solvents or thinners for removing stains are harmful to health and must not come into contact with food.
  • Screw connections can gradually loosen in use and impair stability. Before each use, you check they are tight and tighten all screws if needed.

The cleaning chapter (p. 9) begins with a sentence about stainless steel that discolours at high temperatures, which is not a defect. We read it as standard text, since Amazon describes the grates as chrome-plated. After grilling, you let the fuel burn out so that excess fat and grilling residues burn off and the cleaning effort drops. Cold ash is emptied. You take off the grates, clean them thoroughly with washing-up water and dry them thoroughly. Loose deposits you remove with a wet sponge and then dry with a soft, clean cloth without scratching the surfaces. Inside and surfaces are generally cleaned with warm soapy water. Strong or abrasive solvents and scouring pads are taboo because they attack the surfaces and leave scouring marks.

The ash has its own warning: it contains salt and, when damp, attacks the inside of the fire bowl, and over the years rust can damage the bowl. It therefore comes out of the bowl before moisture reaches it. How to deal with rust that is already there is explained in the guide Grill is rusting: what to do?. On disposal: the packaging belongs with the local recycling points, the grill not in household waste but with an approved disposal company or the municipal disposal facility.

What does the Pasadena cost with everything that is missing?

The grill itself costs approx. €77 (Amazon, as of September 2026). On top come charcoal or briquettes, firelighters to EN 1860-3, gloves and long-handled tools. According to the manual, you should keep a fire extinguisher and a first aid kit ready. A cover is not included.

On page 11 the manual lists two tepro accessories that are expressly not part of the delivery: the 3-in-1 long grill cleaning brush (art. 8503) with brass brush, stainless steel scraper, plastic sponge and plastic handle for grill grates, and a stainless steel tong (art. 8517) with ergonomically shaped handle and 44.5 cm length. According to the manual, the brush is available in bricks-and-mortar and online retail.

Our data gives no prices for charcoal, firelighters, gloves, brush and tongs; add them to the grill price when you weigh models against each other. For charcoal, the guide Charcoal or briquettes helps; the manual allows both.

What the manufacturer does not state

These details are missing from the manual (version 2014) and from the Amazon listing:

  • Temperature in grilling operation, heat-up time in everyday use and cooking times; the manual knows only 100 to 200 °C for the first firing
  • Burn time of a 2 kg load, and whether charcoal may be topped up during grilling
  • Material and wall thickness of fire bowl, wind shield, frame and bottom shelf, base material of the chrome-plated grates
  • Height of the wind shield and its effect on embers, temperature and flying ash
  • Number of height levels (Amazon listing: four) and distance between grate and embers in centimetres
  • Spacing of the grate bars
  • Load capacity of the bottom shelf, wheel diameter
  • Number of people (the 12 people appear only in the Amazon listing)
  • Assembly time
  • Suitability for balcony, covered areas and rented flats, smoke development
  • Matching cover, lid or thermometer as accessories
  • Spare parts list and source for replacement grates
  • Full text of the warranty terms to which the manual refers
  • Country of production and year of market launch; only the manual in version 2014 is documented

The prices are guide values from the price boxes of the linked reviews; the details on the three alternatives come from their Amazon listings, not from manufacturer pages. The rating is our editorial assessment, not a measurement result; whether a grill has a lid and thermometer is shown only by the second column. You can find more models in the comparison of the best charcoal grills 2026.

When the Pasadena fits and when another one does

First the lid. The Pasadena has none, and so everything that needs a closed cooking chamber falls away: roasting joints, smoking, hours of cooking at low temperature (this applies in principle to any grill without a hood and is not stated in the manual in this way). If you want that, look at the Outsunny with lockable lid, which according to the Amazon listing has an adjustable air opening for temperature control and at approx. €70 is cheaper than the Pasadena. The price for that is area: 1,840 cm² against 2,378 cm².

If you want to read the temperature, you need a different model or a separate grill thermometer: SunJas and BELONID have one in the lid according to their Amazon listings. The BELONID (approx. €130) adds a crank-adjustable charcoal bowl with which you change the heat steplessly, where the Pasadena knows only fixed grate heights; on the SunJas (approx. €90) you control the air intake at the top and bottom.

For many guests, besides the area of 2,378 cm², the charcoal load counts: at most 2 kg is allowed, and the Amazon listing speaks of up to 12 people.

On a balcony, your tenancy agreement and house rules answer the first question, and the guide Grilling on a balcony the further ones. Charcoal generally has to glow through before it delivers full heat; if you want to grill after work without waiting, the Grill Finder will find the right type.

For two groups the Pasadena is the wrong choice: for anyone who wants to cook under a closed lid, and for anyone who wants to rely on spare parts and a findable manufacturer page. Our assessment: it suits you if you grill steaks, sausages or vegetables openly over the embers, have the space and clearance in a garden, and budget for charcoal, firelighters, gloves and tools.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about tepro Pasadena 1030 Holzkohlengrill

Short, clear answers about buying, using and caring for tepro Pasadena 1030 Holzkohlengrill.

Does the tepro Pasadena 1030 fit on a balcony?

Your tenancy agreement and house rules decide that. The manual says nothing about balconies; it requires use outdoors and at least 1 m clearance from awnings, wooden decking and furniture. If you apply that metre on all four sides, which tepro does not state in this way, then with the assembled grill measuring 84 × 52 cm you need roughly 2.84 × 2.52 m of free space. Measure your balcony beforehand.

When can I start grilling after lighting?

Only once the charcoal is covered with a light layer of ash, as stated on page 8 of the manual. tepro gives no number of minutes. Because the Pasadena has no thermometer, the ash layer is the only signal we found in the manual. How long it takes generally depends on the type of charcoal, the amount and the wind; that is general experience, not a manufacturer statement.

Do I need a cover for the Pasadena?

No cover is included, and we could not confirm whether tepro offers a matching one. We would plan for one because of the design: the grill is open at the top, rain can run into the bowl, and wet ash attacks the bowl, as the manual warns. After it has cooled down and been emptied of ash, the grill belongs under a roof or under a cover (our recommendation).

How long is the warranty on the Pasadena?

According to the manual, tepro Garten GmbH guarantees all parts against defects and workmanship faults for 24 months from the purchase date under normal, recreational, non-commercial use, within the scope of its warranty terms, which we could not locate. Wear parts such as grill grates are excluded. Wilful damage, misuse, modification, incorrect application, careless use, wear and tear, incorrect assembly and poor maintenance are not covered. You pay for labour, transport, freight and packaging.

Who do I contact for service or replacement grates?

According to the manual, the party placing it on the market is tepro Garten GmbH in Rödermark, which according to the company website belongs to the TEST RITE tepro GmbH group. The domain of the contact addresses in the manual now redirects to testritetepro.de, where we found no products. There is no spare parts list. In an enquiry, give the article number 1030 and the grate dimensions of approx. 58 × 20.5 cm.

Is the Pasadena enough for 12 people?

The figure appears only in the Amazon listing; the manual gives no number of people. By calculation, 12 people share 2,378 cm², about 198 cm² per guest, which is roughly 14 × 14 cm (our calculation, with no deduction for the gaps between the bars). If you grill in two batches, you need less space at once. The charcoal load stays limited to 2 kg in any case.
