A box with a lid on two wheels
The Outsunny with lockable lid is a charcoal grill of the grill trolley type: a grill bowl on a steel frame, a wooden shelf on the left and right, a shelf board underneath, and on one side two wheels, on the other two feet. It costs approx. €80 (Amazon page on 20.10.2026: €79.90). In our charcoal grills category, it counts among the grill trolleys with a lid.
In the product photo, the bowl is not a round pot like on a kettle grill, but a box with strongly rounded corners. The lid opens towards the back, there is a bar handle on top, and a round ventilation rosette can be seen inside the lid. A second, narrow rack hangs at the back above the main grill. The shelves are made of individual wooden slats.
Aosom sells Outsunny in its own shop under the name Holzkohlegrill aus Stahl Grillwagen (steel charcoal grill trolley). According to the instructions, the importer in Germany is MH Handel GmbH in Hamburg, and the grill is made in China. We did not have it in front of us and did not grill anything on it. What is written here comes from the product page at aosom.de, from the Amazon catalogue and from the 19-page instructions IN241200125V01.
Dimensions, grates and what is in the box
Assembled, the trolley measures 98 × 54 × 91 cm (length, width, height). That is the overall envelope dimension; the two side shelves are included in the 98 cm. The shelves themselves are 34 × 20 cm each, the lower shelf 35 × 34 cm. Weight according to the manufacturer: 9 kg.
Inside, three grates sit one above the other. At the very bottom is the charcoal grate at 33 × 33 cm, where the embers go. Above it is the grill at 46 × 40 cm, and the 1840 cm² that appear in the name and in every description come from exactly this grill. The warming rack measures 38 × 19 cm. Aosom also lists an ash container that can be taken out, and the operating instructions, as part of the delivery. A thermometer is not on the list, and none can be seen in the lid in the photo either.
The manufacturer gives steel and fir wood as materials, and the outer surface is powder-coated. A powder coating is sprayed on as powder and baked in an oven; it is usually thicker than a simple paint. The product page also states a load capacity of 5 kg, without saying whether that applies to one shelf, to all of them together, or to something else. We would therefore put charcoal sacks on the lower shelf and use the side shelves for plates and tongs.
For air routing, Aosom writes of a top air vent for temperature control and of front vents that supply the charcoal with oxygen. The advertising copy describes the handles as heat-resistant. The trolley rolls on two large wheels.
In detail: controlling heat with two vents and no crank
On a charcoal grill with a lid, the air controls the temperature. Fresh air reaches the embers from below, and warm exhaust gases leave through the lid at the top. The more air flows through the charcoal, the hotter it burns and the faster it is used up. On the Outsunny, the front vents handle the intake air and the top vent the exhaust air. If you close both fully, the embers slowly suffocate. Common practice with lidded grills is to leave the top opening rather open so that smoke can escape, and to regulate with the lower one.
This grill has no other adjustment options. Height adjustment for the grill or charcoal grate is neither described nor visible in the photo, so the distance between the embers and the food stays fixed. A Tepro Toronto Click raises its charcoal tray with a crank; the Outsunny cannot do that. What you are left with is the amount of charcoal and how you spread it.
The spreading is the more interesting lever here. At 33 × 33 cm, the charcoal grate is much smaller than the 46 × 40 cm grill. If the charcoal grate sits in the middle, which the manufacturer does not state, a good 6 cm remains on each of the two short sides and around 3.5 cm on each of the two long sides without embers underneath. You can push finished food there.
For indirect cooking, you pile the embers onto one half of the charcoal grate and place the food over the empty half, lid closed. On a width of 33 cm, according to our assessment, there is room for one chicken or two pieces of pork neck, not for a whole batch of ribs. The manufacturer does not describe separate heat zones; in the advertising copy it only speaks of closing the lid for heat and smoky flavour. How direct and indirect zones work in principle is explained in our guide Direct and indirect heat.
Can the lid really be locked?
Not with a key. Aosom describes a lid that can be latched so that it does not open when the trolley is moved. There is no mention anywhere of a lock, a key or an eyelet for a padlock.
“Lockable” therefore means in this case: the lid stays shut when you pull the trolley across the lawn. That suits a trolley that rolls into the shed after grilling. On protection against rain or leaves, the manufacturer says nothing about the latch; our earlier text had read that into it. And because the instructions forbid moving the grill while hot (more on that below), the latch only helps with a cold grill.
What the manufacturer does not state
We looked for these gaps on the product page, in the Amazon catalogue and in the instructions, and did not find them: a maximum temperature or a temperature range, the time until the grill is ready, an amount of charcoal in kilograms, consumption and burn time, the thickness of the bowl, lid and frame sheet steel, the material and coating of the three grates (that is, whether chromed, enamelled or stainless steel), the material of the ash container, a working height, pack size and shipping weight, warranty terms, a spare parts list with names, a matching cover, the model’s year of release, and what the 5 kg load capacity refers to. Aosom does not describe suitability for smoking either. The 220 to 240 °C and the 30 to 40 minutes of assembly time that previously appeared in this review could not be found again in any source, and we have removed them.
Safety and care according to the instructions
Page 6 of the instructions lists 31 safety points. We reproduce them here sorted by topic, using the manufacturer’s wording as far as possible. One point (no. 9) applies only to North America, and one (no. 26, the intended use) is in the last section.
On placement: the grill is to be used “always in accordance with all applicable regional, provincial, state and national regulations”; you are to ask the local authority or fire brigade about burning regulations or bans. Not indoors, not in a closed or habitable space, such as “houses, caravans, motorhomes, boats”, with the addition: “Risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, fatal.” Also not in or near recreational vehicles or boats. Not near flammable or combustible objects. The surface must be “flat, level, stable and heat-resistant”. And: 3 m of distance from combustible construction is required at the sides and back, and the appliance must not be used under combustible overhead structures. For balconies, that is the decisive figure; more on this in our guide Grilling on a balcony.
On fire and fuel: for Europe, “No methylated spirits or petrol for lighting or relighting” applies, and only firelighters conforming to EN 1860-3 are permitted. For North America, point 9 requires solid, grill-certified lighting aids and prohibits liquid accelerants. Materials with harmful or toxic smells must not be burned, “such as oil, grease, pressure-treated wood, plastics, flammable liquids, garden waste, clothing and rags”, and also no paper, no cardboard and nothing similar. Never fill the fire bowl more than three quarters full and never less than 5 cm below the upper edge of the combustion chamber. No large fires; the grill is “intended only for small fires”. Before the first cooking, heat the grill and keep the fuel glowing hot for at least 30 minutes.
During use: the grill gets very hot and must not be moved during operation, nor while it is hot; let it cool down completely first. Check before each use that it is completely and securely assembled. Never leave it unattended. Keep children and pets away, and take particular care when they are nearby. Do not use it under the influence of alcohol or medication. Keep hair, clothing and jewellery away from embers and flames. Do not touch hot surfaces and always wear heat-resistant protective gloves; according to point 24, the handle can “reach extreme temperatures”, so use a glove or pad. Use only heat-resistant utensils and no accessories that the manufacturer does not recommend or sell. If it is damaged, do not repair or repaint it, but dispose of it.
Extinguishing and cleaning: no water to put out charcoal or cool the grill. Clean only when the body has cooled down completely. For food and oil stains, the instructions recommend “soaking the grill in water for 10 minutes” and then cleaning with a soft cloth. If you rinse it with water, you should dry it as well as possible and store it in a cool place. Soaking sits poorly with a trolley 98 cm wide; we read it as meaning the grates and ash container, which can be taken out. The instructions themselves do not say so.
Three grill trolleys that come into question alongside it
| Model | The difference | Price | Our rating | Choose this one if |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Outsunny grill trolley with lockable lid (this one) | Lid with two vents, grill 46 × 40 cm, no height adjustment | approx. €80 | 7.4 | you want to grill with a lid for up to eight people and want to spend little |
| tepro Pasadena 1030 | no lid, but two height-adjustable grills and wind guard | approx. €76 | 8.2 | you only grill directly and want to control the heat via grill height |
| Outsunny Kompakt grill trolley | Barrel shape with lid thermometer, main grill in 304 stainless steel, only 0.12 m² | approx. €98 | 7.8 | there are usually two or three of you and you want to read the lid temperature |
| Tepro Toronto Click | Charcoal tray height-adjustable by crank, grill approx. 56 × 41.5 cm | approx. €139 | 8.2 | you also want to cook indirectly and a trolley of a good 25 kg does not bother you |
The prices come from our price boxes and change constantly. The rating is our editorial assessment from the data comparison; we did not measure anything.
When the Outsunny, when another
First, the question of the lid. The tepro Pasadena 1030 costs approx. €76, the Outsunny approx. €80, and the delivery list in the tepro instructions includes no lid. In return it has two chromed grills, for which the listing states four height levels and approx. 58 × 41 cm together. If you mostly grill sausages, pork belly slices and vegetables, you control the heat there via the distance from the embers and do not need a lid. If you want to finish a chicken or thick chops with the lid closed now and then, take the Outsunny.
Then the temperature display. The Outsunny Kompakt is at approx. €98, the Outsunny with lockable lid at approx. €80. According to its listing, it has a thermometer in the lid, four adjustable ventilation openings and a main grill in 304 stainless steel, but only 0.12 m² of grilling area, so around 1200 cm² against 1840 cm². For two or three people, we would take the Kompakt. For six or eight, the grill is too small, and you can buy a separate probe thermometer afterwards; unlike a lid thermometer, it measures directly in the food.
The distance from the embers swings the choice the most. The Tepro Toronto Click costs approx. €139, the Outsunny approx. €80. Its charcoal tray can be raised and lowered by crank, and tepro gives the grilling area as approx. 56 × 41.5 cm. In return, according to the instructions, it weighs approx. 25.4 kg, almost three times the 9 kg of the Outsunny. If you grill every weekend and want to switch between fierce searing and slow cooking, the crank gives you a tool that the Outsunny lacks. If you grill four times a summer, according to our assessment you pay for something you rarely need.
And the location: because of the 3 m in the instructions, the Outsunny belongs in the garden or on an open terrace. If you are not sure which type of grill suits your space, the Grill finder asks about area, number of people and budget.
Who is it suitable for?
According to our assessment, the Outsunny suits people with a garden who grill three to six times a year for a family or a small group, want a lid, and push the grill into the garage or shed afterwards. At 9 kg and with two wheels, that is also doable alone, as long as it is cold.
It is the wrong choice for anyone with a balcony or covered terrace, for people who plan low and slow cooking over many hours, and for anyone who wants to use the grill commercially: according to point 26 of the instructions, it is “intended exclusively for non-commercial outdoor use for cooking food for human consumption”. The sausage stand at the club fete is therefore ruled out.
