What the FUSION is, and why the price raises questions
The FUSION is a charcoal grill that lights its charcoal with an electric heating coil and has a rotisserie with its own motor built in. It stands on a single pedestal. In the German instructions, Everdure by Heston Blumenthal calls it a charcoal grill with electric ignition and stand, and the manufacturer explains the name as a fusion of the advantages of charcoal and gas grills. We read that mainly as a pointer to the start: press a button instead of filling a chimney starter.
In our price box, it is listed at Amazon at approx. €384 (as of September 2026). On the German manufacturer site, the FUSION with stand costs €799.00, listed under article number HBCE1BSEU. We checked this and the other manufacturer prices in this text on everdure.de on 2 October 2026. Amazon lists it as HBCE1BSDE. According to the instructions, HBCE1BS stands for the version with stand, and the Amazon number fits that.
The Amazon data record is still not clean. The feature list gives the colour as green, the data sheet says steel, and Amazon gives the weight as approx. 51 kg when converted, clearly more than Everdure itself. On everdure.com, the FUSION is only available in Matte Black. For an offer below half the manufacturer price, we would have the seller confirm that the model number and scope of delivery are correct. Everdure counts the grill body, the stand, a lid, the rotisserie spit and two CLIPLOCK forks as part of the delivery.
How it compares with the other charcoal grills whose data we compare is shown in the charcoal grill category.
A box on a pedestal: construction and dimensions
In the product photo, a rectangular grill box sits on a single pedestal with a flat base plate. At the front right are the two round knobs, the left one for ignition, the right one for the motor. On the left and right, the two rods between which the spit hangs rise up.
For the grill with stand, the instructions give 730 mm length, 400 mm width and 900 mm height. If you extend the spit support rods fully, it becomes 170 mm taller. The manufacturer’s two websites deviate from this, everdure.com with 419 mm depth plus 830 mm width and 1,076 mm height with the rods extended, everdure.de with 410, 859 and 1,083 mm. For the footprint, plan for at least 73 × 42 cm; with the spit rods raised, it becomes up to 86 cm wide.
The weight is 37 kg net and 41 kg gross according to everdure.com, while everdure.de says 38 kg. According to the parts list, the stand comes with six small rubber feet. You should lift the unit only at the sides of the underside, and with the stand you move grill and stand separately. If you put the FUSION away in the garage after every grilling evening, you carry twice.
Grilling happens on a single grate. The German product page gives its area as 44 × 33.5 cm, arithmetically approx. 1,474 cm², while everdure.com gives 1,600 cm². The sources also contradict each other on the material: sealed steel on everdure.de, chrome-plated in the instructions. The grate can be lifted out completely or raised from the front with a lever so that you can add charcoal. Its hinges point downwards and click into two notches at the front and back. The instructions describe it discolouring over time from the heat as a normal process.
Beneath it lies the grill pan, triple porcelain-enamelled according to everdure.de, black enamelled in the quick start guide. Inside it sits a stainless steel insert that protects the heating element. According to everdure.de, the charcoal insert is removable.
That leaves the lid. It is included, along with two lid holders, and according to the manufacturer it serves as a windbreak while grilling; the instructions describe hanging it on the holder at the back for this. The FAQ on everdure.com even say the FUSION has no lid. For us, that makes it an open grill.
For assembly, the instructions require only a medium-sized screwdriver.
What no manufacturer source says
We reviewed the German product page, the German instructions including the wiring diagram, everdure.com and the 2025 US quick start guide. In none of them did we find:
- the material of the housing, lid and stand; for exterior cleaning, the instructions mention only painted and plastic surfaces
- a maximum temperature at the grate and a heat-up time to a specific temperature
- burn time and consumption of a charcoal load
- a number of people it serves
- the distances between spit and grate at the three height settings
- the power consumption of the rotisserie motor
- casters or wheels, on the grill and on the stand
- the country of manufacture
- spare part prices for the heating element, grate and charcoal pan, plus a price for the bamboo tabletop, which has no article page of its own on everdure.de
- which awards are meant when everdure.de speaks of a design that has won multiple international awards, and what share Heston Blumenthal had in the development
- what the endings DE (Amazon) and EU (everdure.de) of the model number distinguish
In detail: how the heating coil lights the charcoal
The Fast Flame Ignition System manages without a pilot flame. According to the instructions, it relies on charcoal igniting as soon as it is heated to a certain temperature. The heating element sits under the charcoal. The piece closest to it catches first, and as it glows and turns to ash, the embers spread to the charcoal around it.
The procedure according to the instructions: you stack the charcoal on the charcoal support so that it protrudes by 20 mm, and press the left knob. A tone sounds, and an LED shows that the heating element is switched on. After 7 minutes, the timer switches off and the charcoal keeps burning by itself. The US quick start guide describes smoke appearing after a few minutes and then a flame.
According to the wiring diagram, a thermostat marked 100C is in series with the heating element. If the heat from charcoal and coil together becomes too strong, it switches the coil off, while the 7 minutes keep running regardless. Once the time is up, you must not restart. The instructions justify this by saying that the heat of the heating element interferes with the natural course of the charcoal turning to ash. If the charcoal stays cold, a second press of the button does not help; what you check then is in the FAQ below.
On power, Everdure contradicts itself. The product features on everdure.de and everdure.com give 1,400 W, while the instructions and the data table on everdure.de give 1,800 W. The instructions give 220 to 240 V as the connection. At 230 V, the unit therefore draws 6.1 to 7.8 A arithmetically, which is no bottleneck on a household circuit fused at 16 A, as is usual in Germany. And because the coil heats for at most 7 minutes, one ignition needs arithmetically no more than 0.16 to 0.21 kWh.
When you can grill is answered differently by the advertising and the instructions. The German product page advertises 10 minutes until the grill is ready, everdure.com advertises ignition in under 10 minutes and qualifies this in a footnote by saying that ignition time depends on the type of charcoal and external conditions. According to the instructions, the bulk of the charcoal is partly or fully lit after 10 to 15 minutes depending on weather and fuel, and the safety notes say: “The grill must be heated up and the charcoal must glow red for at least 30 minutes before grilling can begin.” We would plan around those 30 minutes. The button saves you the lighting, but not the wait for the embers.
100% natural lump charcoal is recommended. According to the quick start guide, briquettes also work, but because of their ingredients ignition can take longer, and everdure.com guarantees no ignition time for them. The instructions allow no more than 1.2 kg of fuel at a time, and lava rock and other non-combustible products do not belong in the charcoal container. What distinguishes lump charcoal from briquettes when glowing is covered in our guide charcoal or briquettes.
How do you control the heat without vents?
Through the amount and position of the charcoal. Air vents or a thermometer do not appear in the manufacturer documents. Instead, Everdure classifies the heat with a hand test, and you build zones by piling the charcoal at different heights.
The hand test from the quick start guide works like this: as soon as the charcoal is lightly covered with grey ash, you hold your hand about 15 cm above the grate. If you have to pull it away after 2 to 4 seconds, according to Everdure it is 220 to 260 °C, the level for searing. 5 to 7 seconds corresponds to 170 to 220 °C, intended for chicken or the rotisserie. At 8 to 10 seconds it is 150 to 170 °C for slow cooking of meat. That is a rule of thumb, not a measured value, and it depends on your hand.
For direct grilling, you spread the fully lit charcoal evenly in the pan and put the grate back. The instructions recommend putting the grate on only once the charcoal is lit and spread, and the food only once the charcoal has turned to ash. For indirect grilling, you push the charcoal to the sides and leave one area free.
Without an enclosed cooking chamber, this works differently than in a kettle grill with a lid. The piece in the free zone gets no radiation from below, but there is also no hot air circulating around the meat under a hood. Heat reaches it mainly from the side, from the embers. In our assessment, the free zone is therefore better suited to finishing and keeping warm than to a roast that takes hours; for large pieces, the FUSION’s rotisserie is intended.
You may also add charcoal while grilling. The grate folds up for this, and because it is hot then, the quick start guide advises using tongs. The charcoal should never lie higher than the top point of the charcoal container. You lay small food across the bars so that nothing falls through the gaps.
The rotisserie: motor in the right-hand column
Everdure calls the system Rotiscope Technology, patented on the German product page, a pending patent in the instructions. The two support rods sit in the box. If you press them briefly, they release and pop out; you then pull them up and turn them clockwise until they lock at one of three heights.
The motor sits in the right-hand rod. You skewer the food on the spit and clamp it with the two CLIPLOCK forks. The spit goes tip first into the hole at the top of the right-hand rod, you lay the handle end in the recess of the left one and close the cap. You start with the right knob, again with a tone and LED, and stop with the same knob. The spit is removed with heat-resistant gloves.
The instructions give 15 kg as the maximum rated load of the motor. One sentence from it belongs before the purchase: you are to check whether your pieces of meat are suitable in size for the spit. According to everdure.com, the grill has its own compartment for spit and forks. Replacement forks are sold by everdure.de as a pack of two, 2 x ClipLock Forks (FUSIONFORKPK), for €55.00.
Under a rotating piece, fat drips, and according to the instructions that can create flare-ups that burn the food. You should therefore not leave the grill alone for long. The quick start guide is more specific. Leave a channel without charcoal under the spit so the juices drip beside it, and set the rods high enough that flames do not reach the meat. Instead of oily marinades, Everdure recommends a dry rub. If a flare-up becomes dangerous, you stop the motor and take out spit and meat with heat-resistant gloves.

Location and power: what the instructions require
The FUSION is intended exclusively for outdoor use, and the place of operation must be well ventilated. The reason is given by a later note: burning solid fuels releases toxic gases that can lead to death. The unit must therefore not be operated indoors or brought indoors until the fire has gone out completely.
The instructions require at least 250 mm clearance from all highly flammable materials and any flammable surface. A further note adds three points. The immediate surroundings should be free of combustible materials, you do not grill under overhanging parts of buildings or under overhanging branches, and because solid fuels smoke to different degrees, you should consider that when setting up. The instructions contain no separate rule for balconies. By our reading, the balcony above yours is an overhanging part of a building. What your house rules and tenancy agreement allow, you have to clarify yourself anyway.
In wind: protect it from the wind if possible. If that cannot be avoided, you set the grill up lengthwise, parallel to the wind direction. It should not be left unattended for longer than 5 minutes during use, because charcoal varies in burn time and intensity. It has no place on boats, trailers and other mobile vehicles.
On power. The mains cable is 1.5 m long and coils into a drum on the right-hand side. During use, you always pull it out completely, because if it stays fully or partly coiled, it can overheat and be damaged. But you must not overstretch it either; according to the troubleshooting section, the internal connection can otherwise be interrupted. The cable must touch neither hot surfaces nor lit charcoal. A timer that lights the grill at a set time is prohibited because there is a fire risk if the unit is covered or incorrectly positioned. After grilling, you pull the plug and retract the cable fully.
If the RCD (residual-current circuit breaker) trips, Everdure names four steps in the FAQ on everdure.com: unplug and try another socket, plug in directly without an extension cable, dry a recently wet unit indoors and, if it keeps tripping on other sockets as well, contact customer service. Before use, the German instructions require that all electrical connections are secure, dry and protected from moisture; you never disconnect the unit from the mains with wet hands, and you do not pull the cable out of the socket by force.
For lighting, the German instructions are unambiguous: the unit is intended exclusively for electric charcoal ignition. Methylated spirits, petrol and firelighters are prohibited for lighting and relighting, as are accelerants of any kind and fuels impregnated with them.
If a grease fire occurs, you take the food off, if possible, and let the fire burn out. You should prevent it by keeping things clean: keep the heat shield and the holder around the heating element and the inner housing free of grease and oil.
After grilling, the charcoal burns out naturally, and liquid for extinguishing is taboo. As long as it glows, the grill stays where it is, because otherwise hot ash, charcoal particles, unburnt fuel and hot fats and oils can escape and the accessible parts can still be very hot. Once everything has burnt out, ash and fuel residues go into a non-combustible container, a metal bucket being ideal according to the instructions, and if there is still heat in it, you add a little water.
Cleaning and storage according to the instructions
Before any cleaning, you pull the mains plug and let the grill cool down. You do not immerse the grill itself in water; only grill grates, charcoal grids and other removable parts may be immersed.
You scrape off residues directly after grilling, while the grill is still warm. You soak the grate and grilling utensils straight away in hot soapy water, let them dry thoroughly and store them dry. To prevent rust, the grate gets a little cooking oil after cleaning. You wash the spit with water and washing-up liquid, soaking the forks in hot water beforehand; once the spit is dry, it may get a thin coat of cooking oil.
Inside, you clean the charcoal container with a little water, mild detergent and a sponge or gentle scouring pad, and stubborn residue with a little baking powder on the wet sponge. Abrasives are excluded. Ash and remaining fuel come out after every use, once burnt out and cooled.
Beneath it waits the part that a grill without a heating coil does not have. Remove the charcoal support, carefully turn the heating element upwards, take out the holder and heat shield and empty them, remove ash and oil from the heating element’s holder, and put everything back. Before the next grilling session, every part must be seated correctly again.
Outside, for painted surfaces and plastic you use a mild household cleaner and a clean cloth, without abrasives and without aggressive cleaners. Paint thinner and similar solvents are prohibited, as is cold water on hot surfaces. Afterwards you dry thoroughly. You try a new cleaning product first on a small spot. You wipe the rotisserie rods with a soft cloth and take care that no water runs along them into the unit.
Outdoors, the FUSION may stay where it is, but only protected and covered, away from wind and weather, preferably under the matching FUSION protective cover. Otherwise it belongs indoors. On everdure.de, the FUSION Premium cover, long (HBC1COVERL) costs €80.00; it is not in the box. If you add it to the Amazon price, you end up at approx. €464. As further accessories, everdure.de lists, among others, a warming rack, rotisserie basket and a bamboo tabletop; a bamboo shelf is not included with the grill. everdure.com lists the warming rack as FUSION Warming Rack (HBCE1WRACK), but there with a price in dollars rather than euros.
Who the FUSION suits and who it does not
The first question is the power socket. If no outdoor socket reaches the grilling spot, even with the 1.5 m appliance cable plus the maximum 10 m of extension that everdure.com allows, what is left of the FUSION is a charcoal grill that, according to the German instructions, you may not light any other way. Then the Schickling Walter XL Basic, for approx. €91 more, is the obvious alternative.
For larger groups, a single grate is tight. The HUB II costs approx. €2,119 more in our price box and needs almost twice the width, but has two grates with roughly twice the combined area and the same ignition.
If you grill spontaneously and want to eat quickly, you gain less with the FUSION than the advertising suggests, because the half hour of embers from the instructions remains. The LotusGrill XL G435 advertises a shorter pre-glow time: 4 minutes, where Everdure says 10 minutes. It is a table grill and costs approx. €115 less.
If one grate is enough for you, the built-in spit tips the balance in favour of the FUSION, as long as your roast stays below the motor load from the instructions.
It is the wrong choice if you want to smoke food or cook roasts indirectly over several hours. In our assessment, that needs an enclosed cooking chamber, as a kettle grill or kamado has, and for such a grill we would then recommend going.
