Our assessment: The Toronto Click is a grill trolley for two to four people that brings a lid, crank height adjustment and a grate-in-grate system for approx. €139. According to the instructions the steel will rust eventually, and the warranty, heat-up time and consumption are missing. If you expect stainless steel or want to leave the grill outdoors unprotected, look elsewhere.

The Tepro Toronto Click is a charcoal grill with a lid on a wheeled trolley frame. It is not a column grill, and its body is not made of stainless steel either: according to the instructions and the tepro site, the lid, fire pan and frame are powder-coated steel, and stainless steel is only in the handles. Our price box lists it at approx. €139, and we have filed it under charcoal grills.

We have not handled the grill and have not grilled anything on it. This text sets four sources side by side: the tepro instructions for art. no. 1164 (printed version 2021), the English-language tepro site, which lists the grill as 1164S, the Amazon listing and the product photo. A German product page from the manufacturer was not reachable during our research in October 2026. What the sources leave open is collected in a section of its own, and our own calculations and assessments are marked as such.

Steel grill trolley: material and features

On the tepro site, the lid, fire pan, charcoal door, ash catcher, trolley and legs are described as powder-coated. Stainless steel is only given for the lid handle, the ash pan handle and the trolley handle. Amazon lists the colour as “Anthracite/Stainless steel”. According to the instructions, the steel paint is heat-resistant up to 320 °C; that is a figure for the paint, not for the temperature in the cooking chamber.

On the grate, the sources contradict each other. Amazon describes the grill grate and warming rack as chrome-plated, the tepro site describes both as enamelled, and the instructions say nothing about the material. We do not know which statement is correct. The grill grate is a grate-in-grate system: an insert in the grate can be swapped for accessories.

On the photo, the charcoal door sits at the front under the lid, with a handle on it and a crank at the side, which according to the part names are the door handle and the charcoal grate crank. Below it sits the ash pan with a handle, and a bottom shelf lies between the legs. On the right the side shelf sticks out, on the photo made of slats lying crosswise with four hooks; tepro describes it as foldable. A bottle opener sits on the front left leg, and two plastic wheels with hubcaps turn the grill into a trolley.

Dimensions, weight and placement

Assembled, the grill measures approx. 115 x 67 x 107 cm (W x D x H) according to the instructions, and the working height is approx. 84 cm according to tepro and Amazon. These are overall dimensions: the side shelf, wheels and handles are included, and a cooking area cannot be derived from them. According to the tepro site, the carton measures 67 x 49.5 x 37 cm and weighs 29.55 kg gross.

On weight, the sources differ: approx. 25.4 kg in the instructions, approx. 25.7 kg at Amazon, 26.55 kg on the tepro site. For planning, the order of magnitude is enough: you will be moving around 25 kg during assembly and repositioning.

For the placement, the instructions require a level, horizontal, safe, heat-resistant and clean surface. A distance of at least 1 m must be kept from easily flammable materials, and as examples they name awnings, wooden decking and furniture. You should not set the grill up near entrances or busy areas. Grease splashes can soil the floor and wall, so the surface must be protected from them. And during operation the grill must be neither moved nor transported; before it is put away, it should have cooled down completely. So you can only move it on its wheels after it has cooled.

Is the grate enough for how many people?

We would plan for two to four people and grill in rounds from six upwards. That is our assessment based on the area, because tepro does not specify a number of people: according to the instructions and the manufacturer’s site, the main grate measures approx. 56 x 41.5 cm.

That works out at approx. 2,324 cm², calculated from the manufacturer’s grate dimensions and not from the outer dimensions. According to tepro, the warming rack comes to approx. 53.9 x 24.1 cm, which works out at approx. 1,299 cm²; it is for keeping food warm, and we do not count it towards the cooking area.

For context, the range: on the tepro site, the Toronto Basic (art. 1163) is listed at approx. 52 x 36 cm, which works out at approx. 1,872 cm², and the XXL (art. 1165) at approx. 71.5 x 46 cm, which works out at approx. 3,289 cm². The Click is therefore around 24 percent above the Basic, and the XXL around 42 percent above the Click (our calculation). From our catalogue, the BELONID and the tepro Pasadena 1030 come to 56 x 42.5 cm and approx. 58 x 41 cm according to the Amazon listing, which works out at around 2,380 cm² for both, and thus around 2 percent more than the Click.

In detail: heat via crank, vents and lid

A charcoal grill has two levers for heat: the distance between the embers and the food, and the air that reaches the charcoal. The Toronto Click has a separate component for each.

The distance is changed by the charcoal grate crank. The charcoal lies on the charcoal grate (on the tepro site, an enamelled charcoal pan), and the crank raises and lowers it. According to tepro, the temperature at the food changes with the distance from the embers. Behind this is the fact that radiant heat decreases with distance: a charcoal grate cranked lower brings less heat to the food, a higher one more. Amazon calls the adjustment stepless. For the XXL, tepro states six levels; for the Click no number is given, nor is an adjustment range in centimetres.

The air is controlled by vent controls, which the instructions place on the sides of the lid and on the fire pan; in the parts list there are vent discs in the left and right wall of the fire pan and a vent control on the lid. By the general principle, more air supply makes the charcoal burn hotter, and if all openings are closed it suffocates; usually the air intake is at the bottom and the exhaust at the top. That is not a statement from tepro.

According to the instructions, the thermometer in the lid shows the temperature in the cooking chamber. It measures where it sits, and at the grate above the embers it can look different, and for the meat the number in the lid says nothing: only a probe thermometer shows the core temperature.

The lid can be closed. The instructions recommend this for longer cooking times, and tepro describes cooking in the closed cooking chamber instead of directly over the embers. Separate zones are not provided for: the instructions have you spread the glowing charcoal evenly on the charcoal grate and limit the filling to 1.35 kg of charcoal, so a uniform bed of embers is intended. A side without embers only arises if you pile the charcoal on one side. The guide Using direct and indirect heat correctly explains this general technique; whether it works as intended on the Click, tepro has not confirmed anywhere.

Assembly and accessories

The “Click” in the name stands for the assembly. tepro describes a patented screw-free construction and gives approx. 30 minutes, and Amazon gives the same time. The instructions read differently: they require a Phillips screwdriver and an adjustable open-ended spanner, run the assembly in 21 steps and list a fastener assortment of ten items with 15 parts in total, including five screws and two nuts. Which connections snap in and which are screwed, our sources do not separate. The 30 minutes are a manufacturer figure, and we measured nothing.

You will need space for it: the instructions require a level work surface of two to three square metres. The scope of delivery includes, among other things, the fire pan with pre-assembled charcoal door, four legs, wheel axle and two wheels, the bottom shelf, the charcoal grate with crank, the lid, the right side shelf, the ash catcher pan, the warming rack and the grill grate with insert.

The instructions ask you to check the delivery for completeness and damage, and state that complaints about damage or missing parts are not accepted after assembly has been completed or begun. We would therefore check everything before the first part is connected.

The instructions list accessories with tepro article numbers, none of which is included. For the grate-in-grate system:

  • Cast grill grate (8571), approx. Ø 30.5 cm
  • Cast pan (8573), approx. Ø 31.7 x 3.5 cm
  • Cordierite pizza stone (8572), approx. Ø 28.5 cm
  • Cast wok (8580), approx. Ø 35.3 x 10 cm
  • Cast iron Dutch oven (8230) with approx. 6 litres capacity, including adapter ring
  • Cast chicken holder (8238), approx. Ø 32 x 11 cm
  • Cast insert for baking (8314), approx. Ø 32 x 5 cm

In addition there is a set of two enamelled cast grill grates (8551) with a cooking area of 2 x 41.5 x 27.5 cm. For the Dutch oven, chicken holder and baking insert, the grate-in-grate system carries the note “around 57 cm Ø”, which we cannot reconcile with a grate of approx. 56 x 41.5 cm. A cover is not included; what is confirmed about the fit is in the FAQ below.

Safety and care according to the instructions

What follows is an excerpt from the instructions in our words, without compromising on substance. It is not complete, as the instructions run to several pages on this, and they take precedence. According to the declaration of conformity in the instructions, the grill meets the standard DIN EN 1860-1 (a German standard); we have not seen a certification report.

The grill is intended for heating, cooking and grilling food, exclusively outdoors, only in private use and only as the instructions describe. Any other use counts as improper and can lead to damage to property or personal injury, for which the manufacturer accepts no liability.

Burning charcoal and briquettes produces carbon monoxide, which is odourless and fatal in enclosed spaces. The instructions therefore prohibit operation in enclosed and inhabitable spaces, naming buildings, tents, caravans, motorhomes and boats.

For lighting and relighting, no methylated spirits and no petrol are acceptable, nor are charcoal pieces soaked in lighter fluid on the embers, otherwise flash fires or deflagrations threaten. Dry firelighters or liquid grill lighters to EN 1860-3 are allowed, and the charcoal should comply with DIN EN 1860-2 (a German standard). Lighting is done sheltered from the wind, and food only goes on the grate when the charcoal has a light layer of ash.

The grill, charcoal and food become so hot that any contact can cause severe burns. Required are therefore grill or oven gloves of category II against heat (for example to DIN EN 407, they must comply with the PPE regulation), long-handled tools with heat-resistant handles and no clothing with wide sleeves; children and pets stay away. A fire extinguisher and a first-aid kit should be on hand.

After grilling, you let the fuel burn out, which reduces the cleaning effort because grease and residues burn off. Cleaning only takes place once the grill has cooled down completely. The ash only comes out once the charcoal has burnt out completely, gone out and cooled; then you pull out the ash pan and empty the cold ash. The instructions stress this explicitly: ash contains salt and, when damp, attacks the inside of the pan, and over the years rust can damage it. You clean the grates thoroughly with washing-up water and dry them thoroughly, remove loose deposits on the grill with a wet sponge, and generally clean inner and outer surfaces with warm soapy water. For drying, use a soft, clean cloth, without scratching the surfaces. Strong or abrasive solvents and scouring pads attack the surfaces and leave scour marks. Paint solvents and thinners are prohibited for stains, as they are harmful to health and must not come into contact with food.

You should protect the steel from constant exposure to the weather and from moisture, because according to the instructions it will rust eventually. Rust spots are cleaned and touched up with stove paint or heat-resistant paint rated to at least 600 °C. Before each use, the screws should be checked and tightened, because they gradually loosen and can affect stability. What helps against rust is explained in the guide Grill rusting: what to do?.

What the manufacturer does not state

These details are missing from the instructions and the tepro site; the Amazon listing contains only the exceptions noted below:

  • Maximum temperature in the cooking chamber when grilling, heat-up time and time until the charcoal is glowing through
  • Charcoal consumption, burn time of one filling and a way to add more
  • Number of levels and adjustment range of the charcoal pan, distance between grate and embers
  • Grate diameter and bar spacing
  • Sheet thickness of the body, lid and fire pan
  • Material of the side shelf, load capacity of the side and bottom shelf, capacity of the ash pan
  • Scale and accuracy of the lid thermometer
  • Number of people or portions for the grate, cooking times and grilling temperatures for food
  • Minimum distances from walls, railings and plants (the instructions only name 1 m from easily flammable materials)
  • Manufacturer statement on the balcony (only the Amazon listing advertises the balcony, the instructions do not mention it)
  • Warranty terms for Germany, spare parts list
  • Country of origin and manufacture, year of market launch
  • Difference between art. no. 1164 and 1164S, reason for the three weight figures

The prices are guide values from our price boxes. The rating is an editorial assessment, not a measurement result, and the table is not suitable for comparing dimensions, because the figures in the rows come from different sources. More models are collected in the best charcoal grills ranking.

When the Toronto Click suits you and when another one does

First, the area. If you regularly grill for six or more people, you will find the grate tight and should look at the XXL in the same range: according to the tepro site its grate is much larger (figures in the section on grate size), but its weight is given there as 38.00 kg against 26.55 kg for the Click. If you mostly grill for two, you do not need the extra area.

The BELONID costs around €9 less in our price boxes, with almost the same grate area. Its Amazon listing names a waterproof protective cover in the scope of delivery, whereas with the Click the cover is an extra purchase, and its fit is open. If you would have to buy a cover anyway, you are better off with the BELONID (our assessment).

The ACTIVA Angulatus I is around €26 above the Click. According to Amazon it has a charcoal pan with lifting function and smaller overall dimensions than the approx. 115 x 67 x 107 cm of the Click; the figures come from different sources and are only partly comparable. If space is tight, we see it as an alternative.

The Pasadena 1030 is around €63 cheaper. According to Amazon it carries two height-adjustable grates with four levels and a windshield, and a lid does not appear in the features list. Cooking under a closed lid, as tepro describes for the Click, is therefore likely not possible; if you can do without it, you save money.

On top of the purchase price come fuel to DIN EN 1860-2 (a German standard; which type is more worthwhile is covered in the guide Charcoal or briquettes), firelighters, the protective equipment from the safety section and a cover. If you want to cook for many hours at low temperature, you will run into the maximum of 1.35 kg of charcoal per filling.

The Click is the wrong choice for tenants whose house rules prohibit charcoal; that applies to every charcoal grill, and the guide Grilling on a balcony summarises the legal situation. It is also wrong for anyone who expects stainless steel, and for anyone who wants to leave it outdoors unprotected all year round. If you do not yet know whether charcoal suits your space at all, use the Grill Finder.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about Tepro Toronto Click

Short, clear answers about buying, using and caring for Tepro Toronto Click.

Can the Toronto Click go on the balcony?

That is decided by your tenancy agreement and house rules, not by the manufacturer. The instructions do not mention the balcony anywhere, whereas Amazon advertises it for garden, balcony, terrace and veranda. Our guide to balcony grilling lists charcoal grills as the type of appliance that house rules often restrict or prohibit. On top of that, the instructions require a distance of one metre from easily flammable materials.

Does a cover fit the Toronto Click?

It is not confirmed. The instructions list a universal cover (tepro art. 8600, polyester fabric with a water-repellent PVB coating) with cover dimensions of approx. 104.1 x 48.3 x 101.6 cm, and all three figures are below the overall dimensions of the grill. The tepro site assigns the Click the size Small, in four colours with the numbers 8100, 8400, 8600 and 8700. Measure the assembled grill yourself.

Do I have to burn in the grill before the first use?

Yes, the instructions require it: at least 1 to 2 hours at 100 to 200 °C. The lid should not be fully closed during this, only for a few minutes at the end. It must not exceed 260 °C. According to the instructions, burning in makes the inside ready for grilling and bakes the heat-resistant paint on the outside. Beforehand, the grill grates and the warming rack are washed with warm washing-up water.

How do I light the Toronto Click, and how much charcoal is allowed?

According to the instructions, you first take out the grill grate with its insert, place two to three solid firelighters in the middle of the charcoal grate and light them with a match. You pile no more than 1.35 kg of charcoal around the firelighters. Once it is glowing through, you spread it evenly with a fireproof tool with a long handle, put the grate in place and set the height with the crank.

Can I put meat in lemon marinade directly on the grate?

No, the instructions call the grill grate unsuitable for acidic foods, and marinades containing lemon juice are only one example there. They recommend a stainless steel grill tray instead. Why the grate is sensitive to this is not stated, and because Amazon (chrome-plated) and the tepro site (enamelled) contradict each other on the grate material, it cannot be deduced. Our own caution: by our reading, vinegar or wine also belong in the tray.

What warranty does the Toronto Click have?

We have no evidence of a manufacturer warranty for Germany. The instructions contain no warranty statement, and the English-language tepro site states one year for all its grills, without saying whether this also applies to Germany. In addition, when you buy new goods, the seller's statutory warranty applies, in principle two years. For spare parts, the instructions refer you to the contract partner and do not include a parts list.

What is the difference between art. no. 1164 and 1164S?

tepro does not explain the difference. Amazon and the instructions from the retailer's server (version 2021) say 1164, while the English-language tepro site and instructions printed with version 2019 say 1164S. The technical data in both sets of instructions are identical. An even older set of instructions (version 2017) belongs to the Toronto Click with the number 1161, and the sources do not say whether this predecessor was built differently.

May I clean the grate and paint with a wire brush or in the dishwasher?

The instructions give no information on this; neither wire brush nor dishwasher is mentioned in them. They name washing-up water for the grates and prohibit scouring pads as well as strong or abrasive solvents, because these leave scour marks. Because the grate material is disputed, we would avoid the wire brush and not try the dishwasher. That is our own caution, not a manufacturer requirement.
