The set consists of two parts: an Ooni pizza oven for wood and charcoal and a pizza peel in the 12-inch size (approx. 30 cm). On Amazon it costs approx. €319 (Amazon page on 21 October 2026: €318.79). Which oven exactly is in the box is, however, the most important open question of this listing, and that is why it comes first here.
We have not had the oven or the peel in our hands. What is written here comes from the Amazon catalogue, from Ooni’s German product page for the Karu 2, from the page for the Ooni pizza peel and from the assembly and safety manual PA-A0034D. In the pizza oven catalogue we list the set under multi-fuel.
Which oven is in this set?
The listing does not allow a definite answer. The title and bundle name speak of the Karu 2, but the first bullet point on Amazon names the “Ooni Karu 12 Pizzaofen” as the contents. These are two generations with different features.
Two further Amazon details belong to the older model. It states a weight of 12 kg, and that is Ooni’s weight for the 1st generation Karu 12. Amazon also describes a housing made of brushed stainless steel, while Ooni gives the oven body of the Karu 2 as powder-coated carbon steel. According to Ooni, the Karu 2 weighs 15.3 kg.
The product photo looks more like the Karu 2: a dark body on light metal legs, the peel next to it, and at the front a door with a viewing window behind which the flame can be seen. According to Ooni’s description, only the Karu 2 has a glass door; the Karu 12 has neither a glass door nor a built-in thermometer.
A photo is not a delivery note, though. In the Ooni shop there is no bundle of Karu 2 and pizza peel, none of the Ooni pages links to Amazon, and the word “exclusive” appears only in the Amazon text. Who puts the bundle together, Ooni or a retailer, remains unclear.
Our assessment: from here on we describe the Karu 2 according to Ooni’s information, because the title and photo point to it. After unpacking you can check this in a minute. If the oven has a glass door and a built-in analogue thermometer, it is the Karu 2. If both are missing, a Karu 12 is in the box, which Ooni sells in its own shop for €299.00 (checked 21 October 2026), and we would then raise the discrepancy with the seller.
What the Karu 2 brings, according to Ooni
Ooni calls the Karu 2 a 30 cm multi-fuel pizza oven for outdoor use, 2nd generation. The product page lists the oven, the Karu 2 pizza stones, chimney, door, fuel tray, fuel hatch and “Karu 2 accessories” as the scope of delivery. The parts list in the manual is more precise: housing, fuel tray, fuel grate, pizza stone, oven door, fuel hatch, draught guard flap, chimney, chimney cap, Torx key, hinge pins, M5x16 and M5x10 screws and a DoorPlate.
In terms of materials, the Karu 2 is built from a mix. The oven body is powder-coated carbon steel, the inner part, base and legs are stainless steel, and the front and back are cast aluminium. The visor is made of borosilicate glass and stainless steel.
Ooni calls the door ClearView: borosilicate glass that is meant to prevent soot build-up, held by a heat-resistant magnet. This lets you see the pizza without opening the door. The built-in thermometer is analogue; app connectivity only comes with the larger Pro.
Unpacked, the oven measures 72 cm in length, 42 cm in width and 77 cm in height according to Ooni. These are overall dimensions. Two things help with space on the table: the chimney can be removed, and according to Amazon the legs fold in.
The pizza stone is made of cordierite and 15 mm thick. The Ooni FAQ says the Karu 2 has a 33.8 cm stone on which round pizzas up to 30 cm fit. Whether 33.8 cm refers to an edge length is not clear from the page; the photo does not show the stone.
Compared with the Karu 12, Ooni has changed the combustion chamber in two places. The fuel tray, which is inserted at the back, is 45 % larger, takes larger pieces of wood and is meant to allow less frequent refuelling. The air baffle has a wider, thinner opening than on the predecessor. On top sits the removable chimney with adjustable ventilation. Ooni also writes that the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana recommends the oven for home use.
The peel: 12 inch, material unclear
Amazon describes the peel as ultra-light with a smooth surface. In the photo it has a light, rectangular blade that tapers towards the handle, and a long dark handle. Which metal the blade is made of is not stated in the listing. The “aluminium” claim that was previously on this page had no source, and we have removed it.
Ooni itself sells a 12 inch (30 cm) pizza peel with the article number UU-P37D00. According to Ooni’s compatibility table, the 30 cm size fits the Karu 2, while the 35 and 40 cm peels do not. Ooni describes it as a smooth, light all-purpose peel for preparing, sliding in, turning and retrieving. Whether the set’s peel is exactly this peel cannot be determined from the documents.
For the purchase calculation, the Ooni shop is the benchmark. There the Karu 2 costs €399.00 and the 12-inch peel €50.00, together €449.00 (checked 21 October 2026). The set price of approx. €319 is below that. With a Karu 12 in the box, the equivalent value in the Ooni shop would be €349.00, since Ooni sells the Karu 12 on its own for €299.00.
In detail: embers, draught and 60 seconds
A pizza oven running on solid fuel heats through draught. As a rule: the embers in the tray heat the air, the chimney carries it away and draws fresh air through the embers. More air means more flame. The adjustable ventilation on the chimney is the lever for that, and the air baffle steers how the flame sweeps across the oven roof.
The pizza cooks from two sides. The base sits on the cordierite, which stores heat and has to reheat after every pizza. The top cooks through the radiation of the flame and the oven roof. A 15 mm stone has more mass than a thin baking tile, so it takes longer to heat up and cools down more slowly with the next pizza.
On heat-up time, Ooni contradicts itself on the same page. The product header says 20 minutes to 500 °C, the FAQ says 15 minutes to the right temperature for baking pizza and names 500 °C as the maximum temperature. Amazon writes 15 minutes to 500 °C. The two Ooni figures fit together if the baking temperature is below the maximum; we would plan for 20 minutes, and more in wind and cold.
After that, a Neapolitan pizza bakes in 60 seconds according to Ooni. For New York style or Detroit style, the temperature can also be adjusted, according to Ooni.
On fuel, Ooni’s comparison table gives a consumption of 1.1 kg for ten pizzas for the Karu 2, and 1.5 kg for the Karu 12. That is a good quarter less. The table does not say which fuel the figure applies to, wood or charcoal.
Can I bake with gas straight away with the set?
No. As delivered, the Karu 2 runs on wood or charcoal. For gas you need the Ooni gas burner, which belongs neither to the oven nor to the set; in the Ooni shop the Karu 2 with burner costs €99.00 more. The Amazon title nevertheless speaks of a gas and wood oven.
According to the Ooni FAQ, the conversion works like this: with the supplied Torx key you remove the solid fuel tray, loosen the two screws of the draught guard plate, insert the burner, tighten the screws again and connect it to the gas cylinder. Ooni states less than 60 seconds for this and refers to the manual for full instructions. The burner is said to work 36 % more efficiently on the Karu 2 than on the Karu 12; what the percentage refers to is not explained on the page.
The Karu 2 specification lists a 37 mbar regulator, with no country given. In Germany, liquid gas appliances usually run at 50 mbar. Our assessment: before buying the burner, find out which regulator belongs with it for Germany. A weighing-up between the two fuel types can be found in the guide Gas or charcoal.
Lighting, fuel and warnings according to the manual
The manual PA-A0034D is the assembly and safety manual for this oven. For wood it requires dry, untreated hardwood pieces up to 15 cm long and up to 4 cm in diameter. For charcoal it says: only charcoal suitable for preparing food. You add no more than 0.4 kg of fuel at a time, and there is never more than 0.5 kg in the fuel tray. The larger tray from Ooni’s marketing text changes nothing about these limits.
The manual lists 18 warnings, given here in full. Do not use the oven in enclosed or occupied spaces such as a house, tent, caravan, motorhome or boat; there is a danger to life from carbon monoxide poisoning. The pizza oven gets very hot and should not be moved during operation. Do not use indoors. Keep children and pets away. To light it, use no methylated spirits or petrol, only firelighters to EN 1860-3. Only bake once a layer of ash has formed on the fuel. Before the first bake, fire it for at least 30 minutes until the fuel is glowing hot. Do not use the chimney cover during operation.
Further: use only in a suitable outdoor environment and at a sufficient distance from combustible materials. Never operate it unattended. Do not remove the door during operation. Before use, make sure the draught guard flap is fully fastened. Do not operate with incompatible gas burners. Sharp edges may be present inside and outside. The door gets hot, so take care when sliding the pizza in and taking it out. After use, let it cool down completely, because areas can still be hot when the housing already feels cool. Always set up the oven on a level, stable and non-combustible surface. And: the product contains a strong magnet that must be kept away from children.
At the end of a baking evening, you let the fire burn down on its own and the oven cool. According to the manual, you only remove the ash once the oven has cooled down completely, and before putting it away you must be sure the embers have gone out.
The safety manual has no section on cleaning the stone and housing, and we did not find a dedicated care guide for the Karu 2 as an official document. That is why no care instruction is given here; the earlier version of this page with “brush dry” had no source for it. What to do about cracks in cordierite is explained in the guide Cracked pizza stone.
What remains open after all the documents
Unresolved after the Amazon listing, Ooni pages and manual: which oven is in the bundle B0H4GSH35S and who puts it together; material, dimensions, handle length and weight of the peel; suitability for balconies, which neither the product page nor the manual addresses; minimum distances in centimetres to buildings and combustible materials; the cooling time in minutes; output in kW, gas consumption, hose and regulator of the burner package for Germany; internal height and width of the oven opening; the exact shape of the stone and the number of stones, as the scope of delivery speaks of pizza stones in the plural; the measuring range of the thermometer; the dimensions with the legs folded; country of origin, spare parts supply and the year of market launch.
What else comes into question?
| Model | The difference | Price | Our rating | Choose this one if |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ooni Karu 2 Set with pizza peel (this one) | Wood and charcoal out of the box, glass door, analogue thermometer, peel in the set; oven delivered unclear according to the listing | approx. €319 | 8.5 | you want to bake 30 cm pizzas with a wood fire and buy the peel at the same time |
| Ooni Karu 12 | Predecessor without glass door and without built-in thermometer, 12 kg | approx. €299 | 9.0 | you want to carry less and measure the stone temperature with an infrared thermometer anyway |
| Ooni Karu 2 Pro | Multi-fuel for pizzas up to 40 cm, Bluetooth instead of analogue thermometer | approx. €799 | 8.6 | you bake for more people or larger pizzas |
| Ooni Koda 16 | Gas-only oven for 16-inch pizzas, no wood and no charcoal | approx. €449 | 9.4 | you only want to bake with gas and can do without a wood fire |
The prices follow the price box of the respective page and change constantly; the rating is our editorial assessment based on manufacturer information. Nobody has measured it. More ovens side by side are shown in the overview of the best pizza ovens.
When the set fits and when another oven does
Pizza size decides first. A round pizza up to 30 cm fits on the stone of the Karu 2, one after the other. If you bake for six people, you wait every time between pizzas until the stone is hot again. A 40 cm pizza has, by calculation, just under 1.8 times the area of a 30 cm pizza. If you want to bake that large, look at the Ooni Karu 2 Pro or, for gas only, the Ooni Koda 16.
Then the fuel. A wood fire means: stay with it, add small amounts and never walk away, as the manual requires. If you entertain guests on the side and want gas anyway, you pay extra for the burner on the Karu 2 and have to convert it. Our assessment: in that case a gas-only oven is the more direct choice.
On weight, the Karu 2, going by Ooni’s figures, is a good 3 kg above the Karu 12. In return you get a glass door and a thermometer. If you often load the oven into the car and measure the stone temperature with an infrared thermometer, you will find the Karu 12 easier.
The bundle contradiction is a point of its own. If you want to be sure of getting the Karu 2, you can also order the oven and peel separately from Ooni, and for that you compare the total above with the current set price.
The set is wrong for anyone without an outdoor spot with a non-combustible surface and clearance from combustible materials, and for tenants whose house rules forbid open fire. The gas burner changes nothing about that, because even with it the oven remains an outdoor appliance.
