The Roccbox is Gozney’s portable pizza oven with a stone floor: as standard a gas oven for pizzas up to 12 inch, around 30 cm, with a wood burner as an accessory. In the EU shop it comes in black and grey and for three country groups, because the burner has to match the country’s gas pressure. The most important buying question of this review hangs on that: which version you get from which retailer; more on this in the section on the German version.

In our price box, the Roccbox is listed at Santos Grills at approx. €447 (as of 01.10.2026).

Behind the brand is Tom Gozney, whom the company presents as founder and designer. By its own account, the company derives its home ovens from his experience with restaurant ovens. Formally, two companies are involved. The German product information in the manual names Gozney Group Ltd. in Bournemouth, while the EU declaration of conformity names Roccbox Limited in Christchurch as the manufacturer. According to this declaration, the oven complies with the Gas Appliances Directive 2009/142/EC and the standards EN 498:2012 and EN 1860:2013, and the Danish institute DBI certified the type examination (no. 0845CR0004).

The Roccbox is still sold alongside the Arc Lite and Tread models. When asked whether the Arc Lite replaces it, Gozney’s help answers with a curt no. Among the pizza ovens in our comparison, the Roccbox has the second-highest rating at 9.3, just behind the Ooni Koda 16.

How the Roccbox is built

As materials, Gozney lists grade 304 stainless steel, the cordierite of the stone, a calcium silicate board, insulation wool and high-temperature silicone; on the product page the steel is called commercial-grade stainless steel. The silicone jacket sits on the outside. It is justified on safety grounds: it reduces the risk of skin burns, which are common with ovens that have a metal body. If it bulges during operation, that is intentional according to a help article, because air is trapped between the silicone and the insulation jacket, and it expands when heating.

In the product photo the body is domed, the opening at the front is arched and has no door, and the gas burner hangs as a cylinder at the back under the body. The opening measures 300 mm in width and 88 mm in height. The floor is a cordierite stone, 310 mm wide and 340 mm deep, which is fixed in place so that it does not slip out or get damaged when carrying. The product page also mentions a double-layer stone floor and dense insulation.

You unfold the legs; according to Gozney you do not need to assemble anything, and the gas burner can be removed. With the legs unfolded, the Roccbox measures 413 mm wide, 540 mm deep and 473 mm high; folded, 380 × 517 × 288 mm (W × D × H). Unpacked it weighs just under 20 kg according to the manufacturer, while the Amazon title speaks of 21 kg.

Ignition is by a spark at a metal tip. If none jumps across, a help article advises bending the tip with pliers so that it sits about 5 mm from the top of the oven. The serial number is on a small rating plate on the underside.

What is missing from Gozney’s documents, collected in one place:

  • Country of origin and production; the documents carry only British company addresses.
  • The year of market launch. The type designation in the declaration of conformity does contain the number 2016, but that does not prove a sales start.
  • Interior height and volume of the cooking chamber. No manufacturer source confirms the 9.5 litres from Amazon’s catalogue.
  • Design, scale and accuracy of the thermometer.
  • Control range, lowest adjustable temperature and gas consumption with the burner throttled.
  • The weight of the stone and what the second layer of the stone floor is made of.
  • The material of the burner and legs. The replacement burner is available in stainless steel and in black.
  • A replacement stone. None was listed in the EU shop on 01.10.2026.
  • Rules for winter storage in the manual. The gas section has only two pictograms on this, a crossed-out cloud with rain and snow and a crossed-out spray bottle. In a blog post, Gozney advises using the cover and, in very cold regions, a shed or garage.
  • The power source of the ignition.
  • An EU burner with flame supervision for commercial use.

In detail: 19 mm cordierite and a thermometer underneath

How quickly a pizza base browns depends on the temperature of the stone. More mass stores more heat, but also takes longer to heat through. When a cold dough disc lands on a thick stone, its surface cools less than on a thin one, and by the next launch the stone is closer to its starting temperature. In both cases the burner has to replace the heat that the dough has absorbed. Cordierite has low thermal expansion and therefore withstands rapid temperature changes better than most ceramics. It is not invincible. In severe cold, Gozney advises in a blog post to heat up as slowly as for the very first time, so that the stone does not suffer thermal shock. Why stones crack is explained in our guide Cracked pizza stone.

Gozney chose 19 mm and justifies the thickness with a trade-off: enough for even baking results, but thin enough for the stone to cool down again in a reasonable time. For the Koda 16 and Karu 12 from our table, Ooni states 15 mm in each case.

The built-in thermometer sits under the stone. So it does not measure the air in the dome, but according to the wood burner manual shows when the oven is fully saturated with heat. For the pizza base, that is the more meaningful figure. The same manual allows baking even at a reading below 300 °C; between two pizzas, the oven then needs longer breaks to reheat. For a replacement thermometer that Gozney ships, there is a video installation guide.

On heat-up time, Gozney’s sources give different values. The product page promises 370 °C in under 20 minutes. A help article calculates about 20 to 30 minutes in gas mode, depending on outside temperature, weather and fuel. For the very first firing, the graphic in the manual shows two steps, one of 30 minutes and one of 15 to 20 minutes until the thermometer reads; before that, the disposable carrying strap has to come off. Add both steps together and that is up to 50 minutes; for the first evening you are better off planning just under an hour.

As the maximum temperature, the product page gives over 500 °C. According to the product page, a pizza should be done in under 60 seconds. A help article is more cautious and speaks of 1 to 2 minutes per 12 inch pizza.

Which Roccbox do you need in Germany?

The version for AT/DE/LU/SK with a 50 mbar burner. In the EU shop it carries the article number GRPBKDE1619 (black, EAN 5056591602234) or GRPGYDE1624 (grey, EAN 5056591602272). The Amazon listing we found on 01.10.2026 carries part number GRPBKUK1618, which belongs to Gozney’s 37 mbar group; we therefore do not link there. Santos Grills lists the grey Roccbox under GRPGYDE1624, so in the German version.

The background is the table on page 5 of the manual. For Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Slovakia and Luxembourg, gas category I3B/P(50) applies there: butane, propane or a mixture of both at 50 mbar, nozzle 0.95 mm, nominal heat input 4.5 kW. In category I3+(28-30/37) the burner works with a 1 mm nozzle and 4.2 kW, and Germany is missing from its country list. Gozney’s help article on the pressure regulator also assigns Germany to 50 mbar.

A German 50 mbar regulator does not turn a 37 mbar burner into a German one. Its nozzle is designed for lower pressure, so it would get more gas than intended. That is our deduction from the table. On the EU product page, the manufacturer concedes that it cannot supply the matching regulator for every country; but the burner is built for the correct pressure, and if need be you can get a regulator at a DIY store.

Whether hose and regulator are in the box, Gozney answers inconsistently. According to the spare parts page for the Roccbox Gas Burner 50, burner, hose and a 50 mbar screw-on regulator for German LPG cylinders are included as standard with the original product. The scope-of-delivery lists, by contrast, name oven, gas burner, pizza peel, manual and, in the help article, a bottle opener, but neither hose nor regulator. Another help article describes the hose: 1 m long, 8 mm inside diameter, EN 16436-1 class 2, for propane and butane.

The only safe way is via the article number or EAN, which you ask the retailer for. Whether Amazon actually ships the 37 mbar version could not be established. The German burner is also available separately: the Roccbox Gas Burner 50, as a spare part only for model RBX1.1, in the EU shop on 01.10.2026 for €129.99 in stainless steel (AR1403) or black (AR1668). On the same day, both German versions of the oven were out of stock there.

Gas and location: what the manual requires

According to Gozney, the Roccbox is certified only for propane and butane. Before connecting, you check that the cylinder really contains liquefied gas, and use only one with a collar at the valve, not a rusty or dented one. It must hold at least 4 kg. On the upper limit, the manual contradicts itself on the same page: the graphic shows 13 kg, the German text 9 kg. Our advice: stick to the stricter figure. An 11 kg cylinder is above that. Which sizes exist and how to check the fill level is covered in the guide Gas bottle for the grill.

Depending on its type, you push the regulator onto the cylinder or screw it on with a left-hand or right-hand thread, without force, so that the cylinder is not damaged. Before you turn the gas on, you put a brush and soapy water ready. The manual requires the leak test before first use, after every refill of the cylinder and every time hose and regulator have been disconnected. The soapy water goes on the connection at the Roccbox, the valve connection, the hose connection and any cracked spots in the hose. You do not light the burner while doing this, sparks and flames stay away, and you also change the cylinder away from ignition sources.

If the connection at the Roccbox shows a leak, you tighten it with a spanner and test again. If it stays leaky, you turn the gas off and do not operate the oven. If the valve connection leaks, the cylinder goes away, and you test again with another one.

Flame supervision that shuts off the gas when the flame goes out is not described by Gozney anywhere for the standard burner. If the flame goes out, according to the manual you set the regulator knob and cylinder valve to Off and wait 5 minutes before relighting. If you smell gas during operation, you turn off the supply at the cylinder, switch the Roccbox off and extinguish open flames; if the smell persists, you call the gas supplier or the fire brigade. After baking, you turn off the cylinder first and only then switch off the Roccbox, so that the remaining gas burns off. The graphic for this shows two minutes.

The gas safety section on page 21 of the German manual also contains these rules:

  • Do not disconnect gas connections while the appliance is in operation.
  • Check all gas hoses and connections for cuts, cracks and other damage.
  • Do not store gas cylinders in enclosed spaces, but outdoors and upright.
  • Keep the supply line away from hot surfaces and direct sunlight.
  • Do not use any additional flammable materials in gas mode.
  • Do not touch, the Roccbox gets extremely hot during operation; wear protective gloves.
  • Connect only one cylinder and do not keep a spare cylinder nearby.
  • Fit a regulator complying with EN 16129 between cylinder and oven.
  • Do not place the cylinder under the oven.
  • Never look for leaks with an open flame.
  • Do not use natural gas, it can damage the oven.
  • Hoses at most 1.5 m long, in Finland at most 1.2 m.
  • When the hose is replaced is governed by national regulations.
  • Never fill the cylinder above 80 percent.
  • Do not twist the hose during operation.

Elsewhere the manual recommends replacing the hose every five years; hose and regulator are available at DIY stores.

On location: outdoors only. By its own statement, Gozney cannot advise on indoor operation; if you have no open-air space, an electric pizza oven is more likely to be an option in our assessment. In enclosed spaces, according to the manual, there is a risk of fire, explosion, injury or death, and the oven must never run unattended. To buildings, combustible material and other gas cylinders, the German text requires 3 m distance, while the English text and the wood burner manual give 1.5 m. We would plan with the 3 m. To flammable liquids it is 7.5 m, and within a 45 cm radius of the burner and oven opening nothing combustible should lie, according to the wood burner manual. The same manual requires a safe, level surface and distance for children and pets, and it forbids moving the oven during operation. In strong wind it should not run at all, because wind can blow out the flame. What is allowed specifically on a balcony is covered in our guide Grilling on a balcony. Before the first set-up, the manual advises asking the local authority about rules for outdoor grilling appliances.

According to the manual, carbon monoxide can arise in both wood and gas mode if the burner gets too little air. A well-ventilated spot without direct wind is therefore recommended, and you must never cover the oven opening. As signs of poisoning, the manual lists: tension behind the forehead, headache, weakness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, coma, seizures, impaired heart function and slowed breathing, in the extreme case death.

Wood instead of gas

For wood mode you replace the gas burner with the wood burner; according to Gozney the change is easy. In the EU shop, the Roccbox Wood Burner 2.0 cost €49.99 instead of €99.99 on 01.10.2026. Its hopper measures 197 × 224 × 216 mm, the combustion chamber holds 2560 cm³ according to the product page, and there are also a removable ash box and a tool for the hopper. The product page grants a three-year limited warranty on the burner without registration, while the general warranty terms provide one year for accessories.

For high temperatures Gozney specifies oven-dried kindling, for lower ones charcoal or briquettes. The logs should be small, according to the manual 5.5 × 1 × 1 inch, so around 14 × 2.5 × 2.5 cm, at a wood moisture of ideally 16 percent; 10 to 20 percent counts as good. According to the German manual, ash, oak, beech, hickory, fruit wood such as apple or pear, and briquettes are suitable. Pine, fir, cedar, redwood, spruce, resinous wood and processed wood, such as varnished or stained, are unsuitable.

For lighting, the manual prohibits alcohol and petrol. The German text expressly permits “lighters complying with EN 1860-3”; under that standard this means firelighters for barbecue appliances. The burner door stays closed during operation. According to the manual, ash can still start a fire after 24 hours; it belongs in a metal bucket with a lid, and is handled with protective gloves.

Cleaning, faults, warranty

Before every use you check oven, burner and air funnel for blockages, such as food residue or insect nests, and remove nests thoroughly. You take off the gas burner once it has cooled and clean it with a brush and compressed air from a can. For the outside, warm soapy water is enough according to the manual; for the burner you remove the ash beforehand. Gozney’s British product page adds: only on the cooled oven, with a non-caustic, bleach-free cleaning spray and with a sponge or non-abrasive cloth.

Inside, the Roccbox cleans itself according to the same page. From 350 °C residues burn off, and after three hours anything burnt on has gone. For cooking, the wood burner manual forbids water, because it is dangerous and can crack the stone. The Roccbox pizza peel, which Gozney also sells separately, is made of hard-anodised, perforated aluminium with a head of 12 × 12.4 inch. According to the English part of the manual, the peel does not belong in the dishwasher.

The manual’s fault table knows three faults. For a weak flame it names an empty or nearly empty cylinder, high altitude or a cold cylinder; the remedy is another cylinder and a look at the regulator. A loud burner has dirt in the burner head or in the venturi tube and must be cleaned. If the oven heats up slowly, the cause is an empty cylinder, cold or wind, and the remedies are another cylinder, checking the regulator and a sheltered spot. On cold, the blog post mentioned earlier adds that the gas can freeze below freezing point and reduce flame size and output.

According to the manual, most fires are caused by accumulated grease or improper gas connections. In a grease fire, you turn off the burner knob and cylinder valve and take the food out; the manual excludes damage caused by grease from the warranty. If the fire is bigger, you keep your distance, call the fire brigade, keep people and animals away, turn off the gas at the cylinder and use a fire extinguisher. According to page 18, you never put out an oil or grease fire with water. Page 19 allows water only if nothing else is to hand: wet the surroundings and use only a gentle spray on the Roccbox itself, otherwise burning grease will splash.

On the length of the warranty, Gozney’s pages contradict each other. The product page gives one year as standard, the warranty terms two years for all ovens. Both agree on five years, provided you register the oven within 60 days of purchase. Even then it stays at two years in three cases: the pizza peel, the stone floor, and discolouration or cracks in the silicone from burning. Not covered, among other things, are cracks from thermal shock or from ignoring the requirements on heating up and storage, operation with the wrong gas, caustic cleaners, moisture from incorrect storage and a regulator that lay in direct sun for a long time. According to Gozney you may also use the Roccbox commercially, but then with only a one-year warranty without extension; the five years apply to private use only. For commercial customers in Great Britain, according to a help article there is a separate gas burner with flame supervision for £125.

The prices follow the price box of the respective page. Where several shops are listed there, “from” means the shop that the page highlights, and all prices change constantly. The technical details on the Ooni ovens come from Ooni’s product pages. Our rating is an editorial assessment based on manufacturer information; we measured nothing.

When the Roccbox fits, and when an Ooni does

First calculate with Gozney’s own throughput figure: roughly 30 pizzas per hour, one after another. With ten guests and two pizzas each, that means baking around 40 minutes in a row, not counting heat-up. For pizzas over 30 cm you need a larger oven; on the Koda 16 from the table, the replacement stone measures 520 × 425 mm according to Ooni. There you measure the stone temperature with an infrared thermometer; Ooni sold its digital model on 25.09.2026 for €50.

On the Koda 12, hose and regulator are pre-fitted in the 50 mbar version according to Ooni; but which pressure variant a retailer delivers, you should ask about there too before buying.

If you mainly want to bake with wood, the calculation flips. On the Karu 12, gas is the accessory, as an attachment that Ooni offered on 01.10.2026 for €99. If you want both, you end up with the Roccbox and wood burner at the promotional price at approx. €497, with the Karu 12 and gas attachment at approx. €398, each calculated with the oven price from our price box.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about Gozney Roccbox

Short, clear answers about buying, using and caring for Gozney Roccbox.

What do the 950 degrees in the Amazon listing mean?

They are degrees Fahrenheit, which works out at around 510 °C. Gozney itself writes 950 °F or 500 °C. The unit is missing in the Amazon text, and because the number sits next to a 60 second baking time, it is easy to read it as Celsius. Other details from the Amazon title, such as a timer function or black anodised, appear nowhere in Gozney's documents.

How much gas does the Roccbox use?

At full output, 408 g per hour according to the manual, in the German 50 mbar version; the versions for 28 to 37 mbar come to 306 g. A 5 kg propane cylinder therefore lasts a good twelve hours at full flame on paper, and the smallest permitted 4 kg cylinder just under ten. If you divide the 408 g by Gozney's rough 30 pizzas per hour, our calculation gives around 14 g of gas per pizza.

Can I use the Roccbox on a balcony?

Hardly, according to our reading of the manual. The word balcony does not appear in it, but if the house wall is right next to the oven, the required minimum distance to buildings cannot be kept. The Amazon text, which speaks of use at home and outdoors, contradicts the manufacturer, because according to Gozney the Roccbox is certified for outdoor use only. Whether house rules or your tenancy agreement allow open fire at all is a separate question.

Does a loaf of bread or a casserole dish fit in the Roccbox?

Only if both are flat. The opening is 8.8 cm high, and Gozney itself admits that this limits the size of a loaf. The manual also forbids loading the oven beyond the dimensions of the opening, and according to the wood burner manual, plastic or glass dishes do not belong inside at all. Besides pizza, Gozney lists flatbreads, pastries, steaks, meat, fish and vegetables as dishes.

Why is the flame yellow, and is soot in the oven normal?

Because Gozney designed the burner that way, and the soot comes with it. According to Gozney, a yellow-orange, rolling flame is intended; the gas burns incompletely in the process, and soot build-up is to be expected. If soot discolours the housing, Gozney's warranty terms count that as cosmetic and it is not covered, just like heat tint. On a gas grill with a blue flame, by contrast, yellow would generally indicate a fault.

Does the warranty also apply when buying via Amazon or Santos Grills?

Only Gozney can answer that bindingly, because the terms depend on the place of purchase. They apply only to the original purchaser with proof of purchase and only to purchases in a country where Gozney itself sells directly to end customers. Operation outside the original delivery area, where there is no certification, is also excluded. You should ask Gozney before buying whether this affects a version that is not intended for Germany (see above).

How do you carry the Roccbox?

Not by the oven opening: the wood burner manual forbids using it as a handle and warns of possible sharp edges. According to Gozney, the Velcro strap around the new oven is intended only for the first lift out of the box, not for long-term use, and it is not replaced separately. The cover has a carrying strap, in the Gozney shop on 01.10.2026 for €24.99 instead of €49.99. Packed, the parcel weighs 24 kg.

How does the Roccbox differ from Gozney's Tread and Arc Lite?

Mainly in the stone and the thermometer. According to Gozney's comparison tool, the Tread and Arc Lite have a removable 12 mm cordierite stone; according to Gozney's help articles, the Roccbox stone is thicker and fixed in place. The Arc Lite has no thermometer, the Tread an analogue one at the stone. Both run on propane only, while a wood burner is available for the Roccbox. In the Gozney shop on 01.10.2026 the Tread cost €499.99 and the Arc Lite €399.99.

What should you do if the stone has a crack on delivery?

Send a photo to Gozney's customer service before the first firing and, if possible, wait to bake until you get a reply. That is what Gozney's help says. Not every crack is a warranty case: hairline cracks that do not affect the stability of the oven, and scratches in the stone, count as cosmetic in the warranty terms and are excluded.
