Which Urban II this is about
Enders sells the Urban II in six versions. This page covers the basic version with item number 2070: a tabletop gas grill with two burners, a lid made of powder-coated steel and a combustion chamber made of cast aluminium. Alongside it are the Urban II Pro (2062) with a cast aluminium lid, a trolley version of each (207072 and 206272) and a caravan version of each for the external gas socket on a motorhome (207030 and 206230).
On Amazon the Urban II costs approx. €150 (Amazon page on 21 October 2026: €149.95). The manufacturer’s recommended retail price from Enders is €199.00.
Enders describes the grill as a further development of the first Urban series and advertises it for the balcony and for spontaneous grill parties on the go. In our gas grill overview it is one of the small devices that sit on a surface instead of on their own legs at table height. One detail that is easy to overlook when comparing: the same device appears in our catalogue a second time, as an Amazon listing with the model number 990207001 and an additional digital meat thermometer.
Burners, grate and lid: the construction
Under the grate there are two stainless steel burners of 2.2 kW each, 4.4 kW in total. Each has its own control knob with high and low settings, and the ignition button of the piezo igniter sits in the middle between them. “Nur im Freien verwenden” (use outdoors only) is printed on the control panel.
The grate is enamelled cast iron and consists of two halves, listed in the parts list as “Gussrost rechts” (right cast grate) and “Gussrost links” (left cast grate). Enders has integrated the flame covers into the grate, so a separate cover plate above the burners does not appear in the parts list. According to the manufacturer, the grilling surface is 49 x 32 cm, so 1,568 cm². If you turn the grate over, the underside becomes a frying surface. The instructions point out that the right and left halves swap places when you do this.
The lid is made of powder-coated steel, and the thermometer is fitted in it. In the product photo, the round display sits in the middle on top of the lid, above the handle. The body and combustion chamber are made of powder-coated cast aluminium; Enders justifies the choice by saying the grill is thus durable yet easy to handle. Under the combustion chamber there is a removable drip tray.
On the left and right hang two plastic side shelves, which you can remove and store separately. According to the instructions, they are not intended for direct contact with food. So you put raw meat on a board or plate.
With the shelves attached, the Urban II measures 94 x 42 x 33.5 cm (width, depth, height); with them removed, the width is 68 cm. The working height is 23 cm and the weight 12 kg. Amazon lists 95 x 42 x 34.5 cm, so one centimetre more in width and height; we go with Enders. The fire box is carried by two plastic frames with a carrying handle, which are included and can be seen in the photo as the two support brackets under the body.
In detail: four operating modes in one fire box
Enders advertises grilling, cooking and baking. If you add the frying side of the grate, that makes four ways to use the fire box, and the instructions describe a separate procedure for each.
For direct grilling, you cook over one or both flames. With two burners, indirect grilling works in only one way: one burner runs, the food sits over the switched-off one, and the lid stays closed. The indirect zone is therefore always the half of the grate over the cold burner. For a whole chicken or a rolled roast, that is the area you plan with, not the full width of 49 cm.
For cooking, you remove the grill grate and place pots on the removable stainless steel pot grates underneath. Enders recommends pots of approx. 16 to 20 cm in diameter, with 20 cm the upper limit. A small saucepan and a medium cooking pot fit, while a 28 cm frying pan is outside the specification.
Baking is done with the lid closed; the instructions give pizza, tarte flambée and bread as examples. You preheat the pizza stone for approx. 10 to 15 minutes at approx. 180 to 200 °C. You can only read this range on the lid thermometer, and none of the documents say how accurate its display is.
What do 4.4 kW on 1,568 cm² mean? By calculation, approx. 2.8 watts of burner output per square centimetre of grate. According to Weber, the Weber Q 1200N has one burner with 2.93 kW on 1,290 cm², which gives approx. 2.3 W/cm². This figure describes how much gas burns per area. How hot the grate gets also depends on the lid, gaps and wind. As a rough guide it is enough: for its surface area, the Urban II is not short of power in our comparison.
According to Enders, preheating takes approx. 10 to 15 minutes at full power, depending on outside temperature and wind. You do not need to light the second burner separately: if the first knob is at full power, the second ignites automatically according to the instructions.
Does the Urban II fit your balcony?
Yes, if your house rules allow open gas on the balcony and at least one metre is free above the grill. The instructions require outdoor use, a wind-protected spot, a level, stable surface and 1 m of clearance upwards, measured from the highest point of the lid when open.
The metre upwards is the real hurdle on many balconies. If the grill stands on a table, the table height, grill and open lid add up together, and only above that does the free metre begin. If the balcony slab of the floor above is too low, the spot is ruled out.
To the side, Enders requires a distance to flammable and heat-sensitive materials that must be “nicht geringer als 0,5” (no less than 0.5). That is what the printed manual says, with no unit. We deliberately do not translate this into half a metre, because it is not written that way; if you want to know for certain, ask the manufacturer.
According to the instructions, the gas bottle belongs next to the grill, and 5, 8 and 11 kg bottles are suitable. The 5 kg bottle is approx. 47 cm tall with a diameter of approx. 23.5 cm, the 8 kg bottle approx. 46 cm by approx. 30 cm, and the 11 kg bottle approx. 59 cm by approx. 30 cm. Beside the grill’s footprint you therefore need a good 30 cm more for a larger bottle. Only the trolley version 207072 stows a bottle, and only up to 5 kg.
Enders writes that the housing design protects the burners against wind, but still requires a wind-protected location. How tenancy agreements and house rules regulate grilling on a balcony is something we have collected in the guide Grilling on a balcony.
Gas connection, consumption and safety according to the instructions
According to the parts list, the box contains: the fire box, the drip tray, two plastic frames with a carrying handle, four handle pieces, the two cast grate halves, two side shelves, two M6 screws, four M5 screws, six washers, the thermometer and the gas pressure regulator with hose. Assembly is described in seven steps. The symbols for it show a second person, protective gloves, a crossed-out cutter blade and a soft surface.
Everything is included for bottle operation: a gas hose to DIN EN 16436-2 (a standard that applies in Germany and the EU) and a 50 mbar pressure regulator to DIN EN 16129, type 694, factory-set for liquefied gas. The grill is designed for propane (G31) and butane (G30), appliance category I3B/P, nozzle 0.65 mm, approved to DIN EN 498:2012 and DIN EN 484:2020 under product ID 0085CQ0040. A hose length of 0.8 m is recommended.
When connecting, note: the union nuts have a left-hand thread. You tighten the regulator on the bottle by hand only, without tools; on the grill you hold against it with a second spanner. Afterwards you check all connections with leak detection spray or soapy water (one part soap, three parts water). If bubbles form, the spot is leaking. Enders expressly forbids a leak test with an open flame.
Cartridge operation is optional. For it you need the type 794 pressure regulator to DIN EN 16129 and a cartridge of approx. 450 g to DIN EN 417:2012 with a 7/16 screw thread, both outside the scope of delivery. Enders sells the cartridge holder set (item no. 2071) for this. The product page does not make clear whether the type 794 regulator is included in this set.
The connected load is 321 g/h at a nominal heat input of 4.4 kW. From this you can estimate the running time with both burners at full power: around 15.5 hours with a 5 kg bottle, around 25 hours with 8 kg, around 34 hours with 11 kg. On the low setting the bottle lasts longer. Which bottle size suits you is explained in our guide to the gas bottle for the grill.
For setup and operation, the instructions lay down these rules:
- Use only outdoors, set up in a wind-protected spot.
- Keep away from moisture and splashing water.
- Place on a level, stable surface.
- Do not move during operation; check the hose and pressure regulator for cracks and damage before each use.
- Do not use if the pressure regulator, hose or gas bottle is defective or leaking.
- Do not leave unattended during operation.
- Open the bottle valve only while the grill is in operation.
- After use and before every change of location, switch off, close the bottle valve, disconnect the bottle.
- Never cover the grilling surface completely with aluminium foil or similar, to avoid overheating.
- Keep a sideways distance to flammable and heat-sensitive materials (the value of 0.5 discussed above).
- No objects or parts of buildings up to 1 m above the grill.
- Keep ventilation openings clear.
- If gas escapes or a fault occurs, close the bottle valve immediately.
- Protect the gas bottle from strong sun, maximum 40 °C.
- Protect the gas cartridge from strong sun, maximum 50 degrees (“50°” is printed).
There are also the rules against grease fires. Fats and oils can ignite spontaneously when heated strongly. So you dab off excess fat and marinade before grilling, regularly remove grease deposits, especially on the inside of the combustion chamber and in the drip tray, and never put out burning, hot or smoking fat with water. You do not smoke when handling the gas system, and the bottle does not stand near open fire.
Repairs and maintenance on gas-carrying parts are reserved for authorised specialist personnel. You change nothing on the grill and the regulator, and nothing on sealed components either. You never oil stiff valves or knobs: gas forms an explosive mixture with oil.
Cleaning, care and spare parts
Cleaning is done only once the grill has cooled down sufficiently, and after every use. Before each use you remove grease residue. Flammable cleaning agents as well as abrasive and chlorine-containing agents are prohibited. You empty the drip tray regularly.
According to the instructions, you clear residue and grease from the inside of the lid and the cast grates after every grilling session, using a mild agent, then rinse and dry. On the burners you remove food residue with a soft brush, expressly not a metal brush. For thorough cleaning, you detach the burners and lift them out upwards. If a burner tube is blocked, for example by insects or spiders, you clear it with a needle or a pipe cleaner.
You wash plastic parts with warm water, and painted surfaces with mild cleaner and warm water. Solvents, oven cleaner, stainless steel cleaner and scouring agents are taboo, and afterwards everything must dry completely. The grill is stored frost-free and dry, with the lid closed and covered.
The instructions contain a spare parts list with item numbers, for example 130004104 for the lid, 130004144 for the thermometer and 130004016 for a pot grate. A spare parts shop is linked on the manufacturer’s page.
Accessories and what the documents leave open
As matching accessories, the instructions list the trolley (item no. 2072), the cast plate (2074), the stainless steel pan and bowl set (2110), the pizza stone (2073), the weather cover (5681) and the cartridge holder set (2071) already mentioned. In the Enders shop, the trolley costs €99.90, the pizza stone €34.95, the cast plate 1/2 likewise €34.95 and the weather cover €19.99.
According to Enders, the trolley brings more height and more storage space. Is buying it later worth it? The grill from Amazon plus the trolley from the Enders shop comes to approx. €249.90, while the ready-made trolley version 207072 has a recommended retail price of €279.00 and is listed with a working height of 88 cm and a weight of 20 kg. If you are sure you want the stand, compare both routes on the day you buy.
What Enders does not state for the Urban II, at a glance: the measuring range, scale and accuracy of the lid thermometer, the temperature reached after preheating, the height of the open lid, the gas consumption on the low setting, a number of people for the grilling surface, the country of manufacture, the market year (the manual carries the version 241031, so October 2024), the ignition material, pack size and shipping weight. Enders also does not comment on whether the grill is permitted on a particular balcony under tenancy law or house rules; the manual only regulates setup and distances.
Three alternatives from our catalogue
| Model | The difference | Price | Our rating | Choose this if |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Enders Gasgrill Urban II (this one) | Steel lid, 2 burners of 2.2 kW each, pot grates | approx. €150 | 7.8 | you want to grill and occasionally put a pot on |
| Enders Urban II Pro Tischgrill | Cast aluminium lid, same output and surface | approx. €179 | 8.1 | you want a lid that does not rust if the powder coating is damaged |
| Enders Urban II Tischgrill | the same grill in the Amazon listing with a digital meat thermometer | approx. €169.90 | 8.2 | you do not yet own a meat thermometer |
| Weber Q 1200N | 1 burner of 2.93 kW, runs on a disposable cartridge | approx. €249 | 8.3 | you almost only grill directly and do not need pot grates |
The prices come from our price boxes and fluctuate from week to week on Amazon. The rating is our editorial assessment based on the data sheets; we did not measure anything on any of the four devices.
According to the price box, the Urban II Pro costs approx. €179 (the Urban II: approx. €150). For the extra money you get an aluminium lid, and aluminium does not rust. Steel stays rust-free only as long as the powder coating is intact, and one scratch on the lid edge is enough for moisture to take hold.
According to the price box, the listing with meat thermometer costs approx. €170 (the Urban II: approx. €150). The grill in it is the same; you pay for the thermometer, which measures the core temperature in the food instead of the air temperature under the lid.
According to the price box, the Weber Q 1200N costs approx. €249 (the Urban II: approx. €150) and follows a different concept: one burner, so no true indirect zone, but according to Weber a grilling temperature of up to 316 °C and a weight of 11.0 kg.
When the Urban II suits and when it does not
It suits you if you grill outdoors for a small household, have a sturdy table and occasionally cook side dishes in a pot. The two separate burners are the argument in this price class: a two-burner grill can leave one side switched off, a single-burner one cannot.
It suits less well if you have no table. At a working height of 23 cm you would otherwise be stooping at ground level, and then the trolley version is the better value.
It is the wrong choice for anyone who regularly grills for a large group. 1,568 cm² of grate, with only one half usable in indirect operation, is not enough to feed a family celebration in our assessment. A grill cart with three or more burners belongs there. It is also wrong for anyone planning it as a camping stove with a large pan, since Enders does not provide for a pot diameter of more than 20 cm.
You can play through which grill size suits your space in the grill simulator. If you only want to grill with a cartridge, add the type 794 regulator and the holder set to the purchase price. And if you have an external gas socket on your motorhome, take a look straight away at the caravan version 207030, which connects directly there.
