In brief7.9/10

The Costway NP10437 is a portable steel pizza oven for lump charcoal or hardwood pellets, with a 33 x 33 cm pizza stone, a peel and a built-in thermometer. Costway states up to 232 °C on its own site, while the Amazon listing says 450 °C. For approx. €165 you get a 15.5 kg oven with folding legs; you buy the fuel separately.

What the Costway NP10437 is

Costway lists the oven under the article number NP10437 and calls it “Tragbarer Outdoor-Pizzaofen, holzbefeuerter Hinterhof-Pizzamaker” (portable outdoor pizza oven, wood-fired backyard pizza maker) on its own site. On Amazon the same model appears with the part number NP10437DE. Our page name refers to the pizza peel, but what is assessed is the oven; the peel is part of the accessories.

It is heated with lump charcoal or hardwood pellets, which you source yourself. The body is steel, and Costway gives the colours as silver and black. The manufacturer lists camping, garden, patio and fishing trips as places of use.

In our pizza ovens category it is one of the inexpensive devices that use embers instead of gas. It costs approx. €165 (Amazon page on 20 October 2026: €164.99).

How hot does the oven get: 232 °C or 450 °C?

Plan on 232 °C. Costway states this figure twice on its own product page. The 450 °C comes from the Amazon listing, and 450 °F converts to exactly 232 °C. In our assessment, the Amazon figure is therefore a unit error.

That would be a footnote if almost everything a pizza oven is meant to do did not depend on it. In the same sentence that gives the 232 °C, Costway promises a pizza “in nur 30 bis 40 Sekunden” (in just 30 to 40 seconds). Such times are known from ovens whose stone is well above 400 °C. At around 230 °C, roughly the top setting of a kitchen oven, a pizza base generally needs several minutes. To us the two manufacturer statements do not fit together, and we would plan with the longer baking time.

The stone is not the bottleneck here; Costway rates it for heat up to 538 °C. How hot it actually gets depends on the embers underneath: how much fuel is in the tray and how regularly you top it up. For the 5 minutes of preheating time, the page does not give the temperature it refers to.

According to Costway, the built-in thermometer shows the temperature in real time. A thermometer in the housing generally measures the air in the cooking chamber and not the surface of the stone. If the scale is labelled in Fahrenheit, a reading of 450 would correspond to the 232 °C on the manufacturer’s site. That would be the simplest explanation for the two figures; we could not verify it. If you want to know the stone temperature, check it with an infrared thermometer.

Body, fuel tray, stone: the construction

In the product photo the body is domed on top, with a black hood and a silver front. A round chimney with a rain cap sits on top, and four splayed legs stand below. Costway describes the oven body as three-layer. What the layers are made of and whether there is insulation between them is not stated on the page; the only material given there is steel.

The embers sit in a removable fuel tray. You top up through a feed chute, and for this Costway includes a wooden box and a filling funnel, both described as “zum Hinzufügen und Nachfüllen des Heizmaterials” (for adding and refilling the fuel). So you do not have to open the front to add fuel.

According to Costway, the pizza stone measures 33 x 33 x 8.5 cm. For a stone, 8.5 cm of height is unusually much. The scope of delivery also lists a pizza stone ring, and whether the height includes it is left open on the page. We would not read the figure as the stone thickness.

Assembled, the oven measures 42 x 81 x 84.5 cm (L x W x H). These are outer dimensions. They are the right figures for floor space and boot space, but say nothing about the cooking chamber. The net weight is 15.5 kg; the 34.17 lb in the Amazon data record converts to the same value. For transport you take off the chimney and fold up the legs; according to Costway, taking it apart takes “nur Sekunden” (just seconds).

In detail: charcoal or pellets in a small ember oven

That an oven takes both fuels sounds like freedom of choice. In practice they behave differently, and that affects operation more than the question of what is cheaper per bag.

Pellets are compressed wood. They light quickly, burn with a high, lively flame and are used up after a short time. In small pellet ovens it is therefore part of the routine to top up at short intervals so the flame does not collapse. The flame draws over the curve of the hood and heats the pizza from above, while the stone gets its heat mainly over time. Here the feed chute of the Costway is the most important component, because you top up while the cooking chamber stays closed.

Lump charcoal takes longer to glow through and flares up less afterwards. It forms an ember bed that gives off heat more evenly and for longer. For an oven whose manufacturer speaks of 232 °C anyway, this can be the calmer choice, especially if something else is to go in after the pizza. If the charcoal does not get going properly, the cause is usually air supply and piece size; our guide Charcoal will not glow through goes through the causes.

To light it, in such a small cooking chamber we would use solid firelighter cubes or a chimney starter. Liquid accelerants evaporate in the closed hood and can flash when ignited; in addition, their residues soak into a porous stone on which the dough later sits. This is general caution when lighting small ovens.

In both cases the temperature is controlled via the amount of fuel. Costway does not describe an air slide or a damper on the chimney, and none can be seen in the photo.

What is in the box

Costway gives two lists on the product page that do not match. The scope-of-delivery list names five items: oven, pizza peel, pizza stone, flame guard and manual. The description above it lists more, namely an oven window, a wooden box and a filling funnel, each with a beech handle, plus the flame guard, a pizza stone ring and the pizza peel with a beech handle. Which list applies is only settled by unpacking. When opening the box, we would check against the longer list and report missing parts to the seller immediately.

According to Costway, the peel measures 25 x 54.5 cm.

Fuel is expressly not included. Neither list mentions a protective cover or carry bag; for a steel oven that stands in the shed or on the patio after camping, we would plan for a suitable cover or store it dry.

Safety and care without a manual

For setup, cleaning and ash we would have liked to take over the wording of the Costway manual. It was not accessible to us, so this section contains not a single manufacturer statement. What follows are general rules for small ember ovens.

In principle a charcoal or pellet oven belongs outdoors, on a level, non-flammable surface such as stone slabs. Wooden decking, artificial turf and tablecloths are unsuitable. Keep your distance from house walls, hedges and parasols, and expect the steel hood to get hot on the outside. Children and dogs should be kept out of reach.

On a balcony, house rules and the tenancy agreement decide, and many prohibit open fire with charcoal.

Ash and embers cool down more slowly than it looks. Empty the fuel tray only once it has cooled completely, and then into a metal bucket, never into the plastic bin.

With a pizza stone, thermal shock is the most common cause of cracks: water on a hot stone, or a wet dough round on a stone that is not heated through evenly. Washing-up liquid soaks into the pores; scrape off crusts dry after cooling. There is more in the guide Pizza stone cracked.

What Costway does not state

We found these gaps on the manufacturer’s site and in the Amazon data record, collected in one place:

  • Material of the pizza stone (cordierite or other)
  • Material of the fuel tray, flame guard and interior
  • Interior dimensions, height of the oven opening and maximum pizza size
  • Fuel consumption per hour or per pizza
  • Measuring range, unit and accuracy of the thermometer
  • Minimum distances to flammable materials and a statement on balcony use
  • Spare parts for stone, flame guard and fuel tray
  • Wheels or a carrying aid

An entry “Energieeffizienzklasse A+” (energy efficiency class A+) in the technical data at Amazon has no manufacturer source and makes no sense for an oven without a power connection. We leave it out.

What else is worth considering?

Model The difference Price Our rating Pick this one if
Costway NP10437 (this one) Charcoal or hardwood pellets, Costway states up to 232 °C approx. €165 7.9 you want to start with embers and bake thick bases or vegetables more than Neapolitan pizza
Ooni Fyra 12 Pellets, Ooni states up to 500 °C and a 10 mm cordierite stone approx. €339 8.8 you want to stay with pellets and bake at a high stone temperature
Enders PACO Rotate 4 kW gas burner, motor-rotated stone approx. €174 8.5 you have a gas bottle on site and do not want to add fuel
Ooni Koda 16 Gas with 8.0 kW L-shaped burner, pizzas up to 16 inches approx. €449 9.4 you regularly bake large pizzas for several people

The prices are guide values from our price boxes and change. The rating is our editorial assessment based on the manufacturer data; we did not measure anything on any of the four ovens.

The Ooni Fyra 12 costs approx. €339, the Costway approx. €165. The Fyra is the obvious step if you want to stay with pellets and the temperature figure is the reason for switching. The Enders PACO Rotate costs approx. €174, but needs a gas bottle and takes the topping up off your hands in return. For the Ooni Koda 16 you pay approx. €449 at Santos Grills.

Who the Costway suits and who it does not

It suits you if you want to find out whether baking with embers is for you, and do not want to spend more than approx. €165 plus a bag of fuel on it. Besides pizza, Costway expressly names fish, steak, chicken and vegetables “mit Rauchgeschmack” (with a smoky flavour). At temperatures in the range of a kitchen oven, we consider that the more realistic part of the promise. It also suits you if you drive to the campsite by car: 15.5 kg with the chimney removed and the legs folded up can be carried from the car park to the pitch.

For hiking or long distances across the site it is too heavy, and it has no wheels.

In our calculation, two items come on top of the purchase price that are not in the box: the fuel and, if you really want to know the stone temperature, an infrared thermometer.

It is the wrong choice for anyone who wants Neapolitan-style pizza with a leopard-spotted rim in under a minute. Such bases bake on stones that are far hotter than the 232 °C Costway states for this oven. It is also not suitable if you do not feel like topping up fuel while baking; then a gas oven is the better direction. And if you want to bake on a rented balcony, clarify the house rules before buying, because charcoal is often prohibited there. Unsure which oven type suits your space? The Grill Finder asks the most important questions.

We would buy the Costway if a 33 cm stone is enough for you and you are prepared to keep an eye on the thermometer and top up charcoal or pellets regularly.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about Costway tragbarer Pizza Holzofen

Short, clear answers about buying, using and caring for Costway tragbarer Pizza Holzofen.

Can I also run the Costway NP10437 on gas?

No, going by everything Costway describes. The Amazon listing does have 'Gas & Holz Pizza Ofen' in its title, but the bullet points below it and the manufacturer's site name only lump charcoal and hardwood pellets. Neither source mentions a gas burner, a hose and pressure regulator connection or a conversion kit. If you want to bake with gas, you are better off buying an oven built for it.

Which pellets are right for the oven?

Costway specifies hardwood pellets, with no wood type or brand given. We would use pellets sold expressly for grilling or smoking, for example beech or oak. Heating pellets for a pellet boiler are meant for the boiler room, not for food that cooks next to the flame. Softwood contains more resin and soots more, which does not belong under a pizza stone.

May I put logs in the fuel tray?

Costway gives no approval for this. Exactly two fuels are named, lump charcoal and hardwood pellets, and the tray is loaded through a feed chute. For logs or kindling, the manufacturer describes neither length nor quantity. We would stick to the two named fuels, especially since the temperature figure on the manufacturer's site explicitly refers to the granular fuel.

How big can the pizza be in the Costway oven?

Costway names no maximum size; the limit is set by the stone and the peel. The stone is 33 cm wide, which is just under 13 inches; a 12-inch pizza with a 30.5 cm diameter fits on paper with little room to spare. The peel blade is only 25 cm wide, so a larger dough round overhangs at the sides when you slide it in. We would therefore stretch the bases to about 25 to 28 cm.

Where do I find the instruction manual?

According to the scope of delivery, a printed manual is in the box. Online, Costway links a 'Druckbare Broschüre PDF' (printable brochure PDF) on the product page, but the link leads to the customer account login. Without an account the file stays locked, so we could not read it for this text. Keep the paper copy: nowhere is it publicly stated which clearances and care steps Costway specifies.

What warranty does Costway give on the oven?

We did not find warranty terms for the NP10437 at Costway, and the warranty field in the Amazon data record names no terms, so we draw no conclusions from it. Independently of that, as a consumer in Germany you have the statutory warranty of two years against the seller, so when buying through Amazon, against Amazon or the respective retailer.

Is the sister model Costway NP10813BK the better choice?

On heat according to the data sheet, yes. Costway lists the NP10813BK at up to 500 °C, also for charcoal and wood pellets, with a three-layer insulation structure and a 30.5 x 30.5 cm cordierite stone. It weighs 14 kg, and the Costway shop most recently listed it at €149.99. In return, its stone is smaller. We do not carry it in our catalogue and only compare manufacturer figures here.

Can I use the oven in an awning or motorhome?

No. Charcoal and pellets release carbon monoxide when they burn, an invisible gas that becomes life-threatening in tents, awnings and vehicles even in small amounts. This applies in principle to any embers, including an oven that is still smouldering after baking. On a campsite, set it up in the open on firm, non-flammable ground, with distance from the tent wall, awning and vehicle.
