An open cooker with a pan on top
The Wurstbräter with grill pan is a commercial-style gas cooker in a small format. The product photo shows a stainless steel box whose front and side walls are perforated with rows of round holes, standing on four short legs with black caps. At the front there are three black control knobs, with a red button to the left of them. On top there is no grid surface but a black, rectangular pan with a raised edge and two side handles. There is no lid.
tepro lists the unit under item number 3341, and the EAN is 4011964033412. The same catalogue contains a twin, the Wurstbräter with grill grate (item no. 3340). There are no other Wurstbräter in the 2026 catalogue. The brand is run by TEST RITE tepro GmbH, formed from the merger of three companies; the manual gives an address in Rödermark, while the head office is in Hamburg according to the company website. It supplies DIY and garden centre chains and online retail. The manufacturer has no individual product pages, and the information on this page comes from the 2026 grill catalogue and from the operating manual in the 2024 version, which tepro issued as the manufacturer document for item no. 3341.
On Amazon the cooker costs approx. €185 (Amazon page on 21.10.2026: €184.99). In our gas grill category that puts it at the lower end of the price range, but technically it sits apart from the hooded grills: the heat comes only from below, and you grill directly.
What is in the box and how big the unit is
The manual lists six items: the burner housing with steel pan, four legs, four protective caps, three control knobs, a pressure regulator and gas hose as one unit, and 16 fine-thread M4x10 screws. For assembly you need a Phillips screwdriver and a level work surface of one to two square metres, and the manual shows the assembly in four picture steps.
One part does not appear in this list yet turns up later in the text: when setting up, it says you should slide the grease tray into the holder provided. So it remains unclear whether it belongs to the grill pan version. In the catalogue, a stainless steel grease tray is listed only for the grate model 3340, together with stainless steel flame guard plates.
The cooking surface is the same in the catalogue and the manual: approx. 56.5 x 46.5 cm. For the outer dimensions there are three versions. The 2026 catalogue says approx. 66.2 x 56 x 30 cm (W x D x H), the manual says approx. 56 x 66 x 31 cm assembled, and the Amazon data sheet converts to approx. 66.2 x 56.0 x 30.0 cm. Only the Amazon title is the odd one out at approx. 60 x 54.5 x 28.2 cm. For planning, we would allow for roughly 66 x 56 cm of floor space and roughly 30 cm of height.
The weight is worse. Net approx. 11.5 kg according to the manual, approx. 12.4 kg according to the catalogue, and the Amazon data converts to approx. 14.5 kg. Whether the last figure includes the packaging is unclear.
A question of design: the four legs are short, and a stand at working height is not included. Placing it on a table is permitted as long as, according to the manual, the unit does not overhang the table edge and stands on a heat-resistant base. It expressly does not belong on movable objects on which it could tip over.
In detail: 12 kW or 5.4 kW?
This is the most important open question about this unit, and tepro answers it differently in two documents.
The technical data in the 2024 manual list three stainless steel triple tube burners of approx. 4 kW each, together max. 12 kW, plus a nominal heat input of max. 946 g/h and a nozzle diameter of 0.89 mm. The Amazon text also gives 12 kW. The 2026 grill catalogue, by contrast, says for item number 3341: three stainless steel burners, approx. 1.8 kW each, total output max. 5.4 kW. On the same catalogue page the grate model 3340 gets the 12 kW.
Can we say which figure is right? Partly. Propane has a calorific value of roughly 12.9 kWh per kilogram, a physical reference value and not a tepro figure. 946 g/h therefore gives roughly 12.2 kW, so the manual is consistent within itself. For 5.4 kW, consumption would have to be around 420 g/h, and no document contains such a figure. The catalogue carries the reservation “errors and technical changes reserved”. Whether there is a mistake there or tepro has been building the unit with weaker burners since 2024, we cannot decide from the outside.
For you this has a practical consequence. Spread over the pan of approx. 2,627 cm², 12 kW is roughly 4.6 watts per square centimetre, and 5.4 kW only roughly 2.1. By comparison, the Cozze G-400 Plancha, also with a closed plate, reaches 4.4 kW on 48 x 35 cm according to Cozze, and therefore roughly 2.6 watts per square centimetre. With the catalogue values, the Wurstbräter would sit below the smaller plancha.
Why watts per area matter more here than on a hooded grill: over an open pan, no hot air builds up. What the burners give off has to go through the sheet into the food, and the rest rises away, even faster in wind. A closed sheet spreads the heat somewhat sideways. How evenly that works over the three burners depends on the sheet thickness, and tepro does not state it.
The catalogue describes the pan itself as enamelled, while the manual’s delivery list speaks of a steel pan. Both fit enamelled steel. Sheet thickness and edge height are missing from both documents. Because the photo shows no openings in the pan, escaping fat stays in the tray instead of dripping onto the burners. That lowers the risk of flare-ups from fat, but it also means bratwurst and meat lie in their own juices, and no grill marks form.
Connecting the gas, lighting, switching off
The cooker runs on butane or propane at 50 mbar, appliance category I 3B/P (50) for Germany and Austria. At one point the manual contradicts itself, however: on page 8 it says once that the unit and connections are designed only for liquid propane gas. The pressure regulator and hose are included, the bottle is not. tepro mentions standard bottles with 5, 8 or 11 kg fill. What the three sizes mean in everyday use is covered in our guide Gas bottle for the grill.
For replacements, the manual calls for a pressure regulator certified to BS EN 16129:2013-08 and a hose of at most 1.5 m, laid without twisting, without kinks and without contact with other parts. Hose to regulator and appliance valve: first screw on hand-tight, then tighten with a 17 mm open-end spanner. Note the left-hand thread, and no additional seal.
Before each use you check all connections for leaks, always with soapy water, never with an open flame. The recipe is given: one part washing-up liquid to three parts water, approx. 50 ml is enough. All controls to OFF, connect the regulator to the bottle, switch on the burner at the left temperature control, open the gas, apply soapy water to the hose and connections. If bubbles form, there is a leak there.
Lighting works like this: the control knobs are locked in the OFF position and can only be turned by pressing. You press the left one and turn it to high flame, then press the red piezo igniter several times in quick succession. After that you keep the knob pressed for approx. 30 seconds until the thermal safety device keeps the gas supply open. The left flame lights the other two burners automatically. If it does not light after three attempts, you turn the gas off at the bottle and wait five minutes. A match also works, but only from below at the left burner, never from above, and you do not lean over the cooking surface while doing so.
The manual therefore does not fully back the Amazon text saying the ignition is in the control knob: it describes a separate red ignition button, and that is exactly what the photo shows to the left of the controls.
At the end you let the cooker burn for 5 minutes on the highest flame, then first turn the regulator on the gas bottle to Off and only after that the control knobs on the appliance to OFF.
May the Wurstbräter go on the balcony?
It is not expressly permitted there. The manual requires operation exclusively outdoors, in the private sphere, at least 1 m away from awnings, wooden decking and furniture and not near entrances. Only the Amazon text mentions the balcony.
A balcony is outdoors, true. But on many balconies the metre to the awning, the wooden floor or the chair can hardly be kept, and the balcony door is an entrance. We would therefore only put the Wurstbräter on a balcony that really provides these distances, and read the tenancy agreement and house rules beforehand; our guide Grilling on a balcony sums up what matters there.
On set-up against fire risk, the manual lists seven points, given here in full:
- As a general rule, keep a fire extinguisher and a first aid kit ready and be prepared for an accident or fire.
- Place the cooker on a level, horizontal, safe, heat-insensitive and clean surface.
- Make sure the unit does not overhang the surface it stands on.
- Keep at least 1 m distance from easily flammable materials such as awnings, wooden decking or furniture.
- Do not move it during operation.
- Some foods produce flammable fats and juices: clean regularly, ideally after every use.
- Do not leave it unattended during operation.
There is also a sentence that matters for an open unit without a lid: gas is odourless and can be fatal in enclosed spaces. So the cooker does not belong in a garage, garden shed or tent.
How to clean the pan according to the manual
tepro wants you to clean the cooker after every use, and only once it has cooled down completely. The manual describes the steps like this:
- After every use, let it burn for approx. 5 minutes without food, which reduces food deposits.
- Before cleaning, turn the regulator on the gas bottle to Off.
- Take off the grill pan, clean it thoroughly with washing-up water, rinse with clean water and dry thoroughly.
- Remove loose deposits on the cooker with a wet sponge.
- Loosen food residues in the pan with a brush, spatula or cleaning sponge, then wash off with warm soapy water.
- Generally clean inside and surfaces with warm soapy water.
- Dry with a soft, clean cloth and do not scratch the surfaces when rubbing dry.
- When the cooker is not in use, cover it with a protective cover.
Strong or abrasive solvents and scouring pads are prohibited because they attack the surfaces, as are paint solvents and thinners against stains. The protective cover goes only on a cooled, clean and dry unit; on a warm, wet or dirty cooker it can lead to heavy corrosion, according to tepro. You should protect the unit from constant exposure to the weather anyway.
Compared with a grate, the pan has no bars where residues settle: it is a single removable part. General tips for burners and stainless steel are in our guide Cleaning a gas grill, and the manual’s instructions take precedence.
What the manufacturer leaves open
In one place, so you know what you cannot clarify before buying:
- which output applies to the unit currently on sale (see above)
- which of the three weights is right
- whether the grease tray is part of the delivery for the pan version, and what material it is
- whether there are flame guard plates under the pan as on model 3340
- sheet thickness, edge height and coating of the pan beyond the word “enamelled”
- a maximum temperature and a heat-up time to grilling temperature
- the number of control settings per knob
- a number of people for the surface
- a matching protective cover with an item number
- warranty and country of origin
The manual refers questions about spare parts to the contractual partner, meaning the retailer you bought from.
What else comes into question?
| Model | The difference | Price | Our rating | Choose this one if |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| tepro Wurstbräter with grill pan (this one) | closed pan 56.5 x 46.5 cm, 3 burners, no lid | approx. €185 | 8.1 | you want to fry lots of small items at once |
| BBQ-Toro stainless steel commercial-style gas cooker, 3 burners | same open design, chrome-plated grate instead of a pan, 10 kW | approx. €200 | 8.0 | you prefer to grill sausages and steaks directly over the flame |
| Cozze G-400 Plancha | smaller plate 48 x 35 cm, 4.4 kW | approx. €177 | 8.1 | you mostly cook for a few people and have little floor space |
| Broil King Regal 590 | hooded grill, 5 main burners with 16 kW | approx. €1,649 | 9.4 | you also want to cook indirectly under the lid and have the budget |
The prices are guide values from our price boxes, for the Broil King at Santos Grills, and keep changing in retail. The rating is our editorial assessment from the data comparison, not a measured value.
Pan, grate or hood: which unit fits when
First the pan against the grate. If you mainly grill bratwurst and steak and want grill marks, the grate is the better tool. tepro itself has it in the catalogue as model 3340, with a chrome-plated grate, flame guard plates and a stainless steel grease tray, with 12 kW according to the catalogue. The BBQ-Toro with the same open design costs approx. €200, the tepro approx. €185. According to its own shop, its manufacturer also offers a version GB-K1103A with an enamelled pan. If, on the other hand, you grill diced vegetables, prawns, halloumi, fried eggs or fried potatoes, meaning anything that falls through a grate or needs fat, the closed pan speaks for the Wurstbräter. What matters for grilling bratwurst in general, we have written up in the guide Grilling bratwurst.
Then the size. The Cozze G-400 costs approx. €177, the tepro approx. €185. But its plate, at 1,680 cm², has just under two thirds of the tepro’s area. We would choose it if space on the terrace or table is tight, and the Wurstbräter if lots of people regularly eat at once.
And the hood. If you want to cook roasts, ribs or whole chickens, none of the open cookers will help you, because without a lid there is no indirect zone. The Broil King Regal 590 is our overall winner in the category and costs approx. €1,649, the tepro approx. €185. There are many hooded grills in between; the Grill finder narrows them down to your needs.
Our assessment on budget: on top of the price of the cooker come a gas bottle and, because tepro recommends it for storage, a protective cover. Neither is in the box.
The Wurstbräter is wrong for anyone who wants to grill in a rented flat and on a small balcony where the metre of clearance cannot be kept, and for anyone who wants to know exactly which output they are buying. Until tepro resolves the contradiction between the manual and the catalogue, we would check the technical data in the enclosed manual before the unit burns for the first time.
