The Tefal OptiGrill GC702D is an electric contact grill: two plates, 2,000 W, a grilling surface of 600 cm² (30 × 20 cm). The food lies between the plates, and according to Tefal a sensor adjusts time and temperature to thickness and amount. Tefal lists it for 2 to 4 people. In our catalogue of electric grills it is an indoor contact grill.
We have not handled the OptiGrill and have not grilled anything on it. The information comes from Tefal’s German instruction manual, the safety sheet and the quick start guide, from the product pages and product data of Tefal Germany, and from the Amazon catalogue. What we conclude or assess from this, we mark as such.
Which appliance is behind the name GC702D
This review carries the name GC702D. The Amazon page behind our link, however, lists the appliance as model GC705D (part number GC705D.NEU), and the type GC702D does not appear anywhere in the Amazon catalogue. Both types appear in Tefal’s German product data. The GC702D16 can no longer be bought there; stock is at zero. The GC705D16 can be bought.
Both data records link the same German instruction manual, and both describe a defrost programme and a manual mode. We have not read anywhere at Tefal that the appliances are identical in construction, so we do not claim it. What we take from the manual applies to both numbers. On Amazon the OptiGrill cost approx. €99 on 6 October 2026; in the Tefal shop the GC705D16 was higher on 6 October 2026 at €103.99.
Build, plates and accessories
According to Tefal, the body is made of stainless steel and the handle of thermoplastic. The OptiGrill has no digital display; Tefal lists the control panel as an analogue display. On the product photo, a row of buttons with programme symbols runs across the front edge of the lid top, and to the right of it sit the OK button and the round colour ring that shows the doneness.
According to Tefal, the plates are non-stick die-cast aluminium and ridged. On the product page Tefal advertises 44% less fat thanks to the angled plates; we pass this on only as an advertising claim. According to Tefal, the slope is 7° so that the fat runs off into the drip tray; plates and tray can be removed.
According to Tefal, the box contains the appliance, the drip tray, a recipe book, the instruction manual and a quick start guide. This list does not include a spatula; to protect the coating, the manual always requires one made of plastic or wood. In Tefal’s feature table, safety edge, vertical storage, grill boost function and table grill function, among others, are set to “No”. The manual fits the table grill function: it prohibits heating or cooking in the “grill open” position.
Tefal lists XA7288 plancha plates as an accessory on the GC705D page (€69.99 in the Tefal shop), but describes them as plates for OptiGrill+ and OptiGrill Elite. There is no explicit approval for this OptiGrill. For plates, the manual says: you use them only with the appliance they are intended for (not in an oven, on a gas hob or on an electric hotplate). They must be firmly attached to the appliance, and only plates from the authorised customer service may be used.
In detail: preheating, sensor and colour indicator
Every batch begins with heating up, with the grill closed and empty. The manual allows for 4 to 7 minutes, the quick start guide for approx. 5 minutes. A signal tone and a steadily lit indicator tell you that you can put the food in. Before placing food on it, you must open the grill completely, otherwise the indicator stays purple and the cycle does not start. If you start without preheating, you end up in manual mode; you then monitor the process yourself or take the food out and start again.
After that the sensor takes over, in our reading on the basis of the thickness and amount of the food. The quick start guide says “measures the thickness of the meat”, and the manual (page 9) speaks of automatically adjusting the cooking process, that is, time and temperature, depending on the thickness and amount of the food. On the product page it is called patented technology that automatically adjusts the grilling time and cycle.
Tefal limits the thickness at both ends. Food may be at most 4 cm thick; if it is thicker, cooking does not start because the safety system prevents operation. According to Tefal’s FAQ, the sensor does not detect food under 4 mm, such as bacon slices; you then confirm the start with the OK button. If the grill stays open too long between two cycles, the safety system switches it off. The FAQ advises at most 1 minute open; 2 to 3 minutes with the plug pulled resets it.
The manual (page 6) translates the colours of the ring as follows:
- Purple flashing: heating up
- Purple steady with signal tone: heating finished, put the food in
- Blue: automatic adjustment of the grill programme
- Green: start of cooking
- Yellow: rare
- Orange: medium
- Red: well done
- Red flashing: end of grilling, the keep-warm function starts
- White steady: manual use or incorrect use
- White flashing: fault, customer service
During cooking, a signal tone sounds to announce that “rare” (yellow) will soon be reached; yellow and orange appear with a signal tone and flashing.
Which doneness levels are there for which programme?
The doneness table in the manual (page 15) lists rare, medium and well done only for red meat and hamburger. Fish has medium and well done; sandwich and panini have lightly cooked, well done and crispy. For poultry as well as pork, sausage and lamb, only well done is listed.
The six programmes are called in the manual burger/minced steak, red meat, poultry, fish, sandwiches/panini and pork/sausage/lamb, plus a manual mode. The product page uses other names: burger, poultry, sandwiches, sausages, steaks and fish. The names in the manual are the authoritative ones here, because only the doneness levels are tied to them.
The OptiGrill does not show a temperature in degrees; the indicator is a colour ring. How hot the meat gets inside, you check only with your own thermometer; target values per type of meat are listed in our core temperature chart.
Besides the automatic programmes there are two operating modes. For frozen food, Tefal has a defrost programme. In manual mode you control the cooking time yourself; according to Tefal’s FAQ its only temperature is roughly 250 °C, and after 30 minutes the appliance switches off according to the manual (page 14). On the OptiGrill XL GC722D, by contrast, Tefal DE lists four temperatures in manual mode.
May the OptiGrill be used on a balcony or terrace?
No. According to the manual (page 5), you must not use the appliance outdoors, and the Amazon text calls it an indoor grill. For balcony, terrace and garden you need a different grill.
Indoors, too, the manual specifies the location. The appliance does not belong in corners or against a wall, to avoid overheating. It must not go under a wall-mounted piece of furniture or shelf, nor near easily flammable material such as blinds, curtains or wallpaper. You never place it directly on a sensitive surface such as a glass table, tablecloth or varnished furniture, nor on a plastic tablecloth, nor on or next to a slippery or hot surface. In operation it must stand free. The safety sheet adds: check before use that it stands stably, and do not place it on a soft surface such as a tea towel.
On power: 2,000 W at 230 V corresponds to roughly 8.7 A by calculation (2,000 W divided by 230 V). How your circuit is protected is shown at the fuse box; at 16 A it carries 3,680 W by calculation, at 10 A 2,300 W by calculation. A second high-power appliance on the same circuit therefore counts too.
Cleaning, care and safety according to the manual
The appliance is intended exclusively for household use. The following list is a selection from the safety instructions of the German manual (pages 3 to 5) and the safety sheet; they are given in full in the manual from page 3.
- Never leave it unattended during operation.
- Freely accessible surfaces can reach high temperatures during operation; do not touch hot parts of the appliance.
- Children aged 8 and over and people with limited abilities only with supervision or instruction. Cleaning and maintenance not by children, unless they are older than 8 and supervised. Keep the appliance and its cable out of the reach of children under 8.
- Do not operate with an external timer or a separate remote control.
- If the appliance catches fire: do not extinguish with water, pull the plug and smother the flames with a damp cloth.
- In case of a burn, immediately run cold water over it and call a doctor if necessary.
- Never put aluminium foil or other objects between plates and food or between plates and heating elements, never cook with foil, and do not flambé food on the appliance.
- Do not place cooking utensils on the grilling surfaces and do not cut directly on the heating plates.
- Do not carry it by the handle or the metal wires, do not move it when hot, and do not heat it without heating plates. For the non-stick coating, do not heat it empty for too long; heating up before cooking with the grill closed and empty, however, is part of every batch. Do not use it if it does not work properly, has been dropped or shows visible damage.
- Unroll the cable completely and do not leave it near a heat source (heating plates, gas hob); do not lay it over sharp edges or pull it. A damaged power cable may only be replaced by the manufacturer, its customer service or a similarly qualified person.
- Never handle the plates when hot; do not hold a hot plate under water and do not place it on a sensitive surface.
- Disconnect from the mains after every use and before every cleaning; all parts must be dry before the next use.
To clean, you press the off switch after grilling, pull the plug and let the OptiGrill cool for at least 2 hours; only then do you unlock the heating plates and take them out. Tefal’s FAQ allows for about 45 minutes, we take the longer figure from the manual. According to the manual, the drip tray and heating plates may go in the dishwasher. By hand, you clean the plates with warm water and a little soap, rinse thoroughly and dry them with kitchen paper or a soft dry cloth. Steel sponges, steel wool and abrasives are off limits; nylon sponges and non-scratching cleaning cloths are allowed. You empty the drip tray and wash it in warm water with a little soap, you clean the lid with a sponge and warm water; you dry both.
The heating elements that are visible after removing the plates must not be cleaned; if they are heavily soiled, you wipe them with a dry cloth after they have cooled completely. Appliance and cable do not belong in the dishwasher and never in water. According to the safety sheet, the control panel is fragile: clean it only with a dry, soft cloth, wipe and dry it, not with a damp sponge, because that can impair the functions. In the photo the buttons sit at the top of the lid. The manual has you clean the lid with a sponge and warm water, the safety sheet the control panel only with a dry cloth. How the two fit together is not clear from our documents; around the buttons we would follow the stricter instruction. Repairs may only be carried out by trained customer service staff.
What Tefal leaves open
Tefal’s product pages, manual and safety sheet do not answer these points; where the Amazon catalogue lists something on them, the manufacturer’s evidence is missing:
- Appliance dimensions and appliance weight. For the GC705D, Tefal publishes only packaging dimensions without a unit; the Amazon values leave open whether they mean the appliance or the box.
- Maximum temperature in automatic mode and temperatures of the individual programmes.
- Cooking times in minutes per type of food; Tefal refers to the colour indicator instead.
- Position and type of the sensor, the measuring principle behind “measures the thickness”, and whether the grill records a temperature in the food or its starting temperature.
- Reference basis of the advertising claim “44% less fat”; Tefal does not resolve the asterisk on the product page.
- Switching time of the safety shut-off and of the automatic shut-off outside manual mode; the 1 minute from Tefal’s FAQ is a recommendation.
- Minimum distance in centimetres to wall and furniture; the manual prohibits corners and walls without giving a measurement.
- Energy consumption in operation and in standby; only the rated power is documented.
- Composition and thickness of the non-stick coating. PTFE appears only in Tefal’s texts on the GC702D, not on the GC705D page.
- Volume of the signal tone and whether it can be switched off.
- Market launch of both types: Amazon lists a release date (15 April 2020) that no manufacturer evidence supports.
- Country of manufacture; Tefal does not label the appliance as made in France.
What else comes into question?
| Model | The difference | Price | Our rating | Choose this if |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tefal OptiGrill GC702D (this one) | 600 cm², 6 programmes, one manual mode with one temperature | approx. €99 | 8.9 | you want to grill indoors for 2 to 4 people by colour indicator |
| Tefal OptiGrill XL GC722D | 800 cm² (40 × 20 cm), 9 programmes, 4 temperatures in manual mode | approx. €129.99 | 9.0 | you regularly grill for more than four people at once |
| Tefal OptiGrill Elite GC750D16 | Grill boost, digital display with countdown, 12 programmes, also 600 cm² | approx. €149 | 8.5 | you want a countdown and the boost function and pay the premium |
| Tefal contact grill GC241D | no automatic cooking system, 740 cm² | approx. €58 | 8.0 | you keep an eye on your meat yourself anyway and do not want to pay extra for the automatic |
Programmes, surfaces and displays of the three Tefal alternatives come from Tefal’s feature tables; we did not consult the respective manuals. The prices are guide values from our price box and change. The rating is our editorial assessment from manufacturer data, not a measurement result, and the table is not suitable for comparing cooking results.
When this contact grill suits you and when another is better
For outdoor use with electricity, the Landmann EG-II-590 comes into question in our catalogue, an electric grill trolley for outdoor use. It stands at approx. €550 with a rating of 9.4, that is €451 above the OptiGrill, and with max. 3,200 W it needs roughly 13.9 A by calculation (3,200 W divided by 230 V), so most of a 16 A circuit. Further data from its manual are in the frequently asked questions.
Then the number of people. Beyond the stated four people, you grill in batches. For that there is the Tefal OptiGrill XL GC722D: in our price box it costs around €31 more than the GC702D (€129.99 against €99). Tefal DE lists 800 cm² of grilling surface for it, 6 to 8 portions in the product text and up to 6 people in the feature table.
If you do not want or need to rely on an indicator, the Tefal contact grill GC241D is the cheaper choice: around €41 less. According to Tefal’s data record it has no automatic cooking system, its plates cannot be removed, and only the drip tray may go in the dishwasher. In return, Tefal lists vertical storage as a feature for it, which is set to “No” for the OptiGrill.
More control costs extra. The Tefal OptiGrill Elite GC750D16 is €50 above the GC702D and €19 above the Tefal OptiGrill XL GC722D, but according to Tefal DE it brings a countdown, boost and more programmes instead of more surface. Our assessment: the premium is only worth it if you really use the countdown or boost.
The OptiGrill is difficult for households with birds: Tefal warns that grill fumes can be dangerous for animals with a sensitive respiratory system such as birds, and advises placing the animals out of reach of the appliance. Anyone expecting a smoky aroma is also in the wrong place here: the safety sheet expressly prohibits charcoal or similar fuels.
