Which grill is behind the Amazon listing
On Amazon the appliance is called “Tefal Kontaktgrill Inicio GC241D”, the catalogue model number is GC241D12, and the listed manufacturer is Groupe SEB Deutschland GmbH. It has been in the catalogue since 21 February 2017. In our price box it appears at approx. €58 (Amazon page on 21 October 2026: €57.99): this is the lowest new price from marketplace sellers on Amazon, as Amazon itself did not offer the appliance that day.
That has a consequence for this page. Tefal Germany no longer lists the GC241D. The Grills and Planchas category on tefal.de contains 16 products, with the Inicio range only as the Inicio Classic GC2718 and Inicio Adjust GC272D. A complete data sheet does exist on tefal.co.uk, for the GC241D40 variant. According to our research, the ending after “GC241D” stands for the target country. We therefore assume that both appliances are identical in construction, and we base the technical details on this British page. The safety instructions and pictorial instructions are Groupe SEB documents linked there; the German part of the safety instructions is on pages 14 to 17. The Amazon catalogue is the second source.
The GC241D is a contact grill for the kitchen: two heated plates that touch the food from above and below at the same time. In our electric grills category it is the cheapest Tefal appliance of this type. We have not grilled anything on it; we evaluated data sheets and instructions.
Plates, lid, drip tray: the design
According to Tefal, the heating power is 2000 W, and the grill connects to 220 to 240 V at 50 to 60 Hz. The power cable is 0.9 m long.
The plates measure 28.8 x 25.8 cm; Tefal gives the grilling surface as 740 cm² and the capacity as up to 6 people. They are non-stick coated, ridged and fixed. So they cannot be removed for swapping or rinsing. Tefal itself writes “Fixed non-stick plates”. The housing is stainless steel, the handle thermoplastic. Amazon lists the colour as stainless steel / black.
Our product photo shows the grill closed. A black frame runs along the sides and ends at the front in a transverse handle bar, and on the silver lid sit two light panels, one red and one green. This matches the data sheet, which lists a pilot light and a ready-to-cook light, plus an on/off switch.
The lid hangs on a floating hinge. According to Tefal, this lets it adapt to food and sandwiches of any size. The lower plate is tilted by 7° so that juices and fat run off. They end up in a drip tray that, according to the pictorial instructions, you slide under the front of the appliance; it is removable and dishwasher-safe according to Tefal and the Amazon text.
The grill is stored upright. Amazon gives approx. 36.3 x 10.8 x 33.2 cm and approx. 3.9 kg, converted from inches and pounds. The catalogue does not say whether these are appliance or packaging dimensions. The smallest figure fits the flat, closed housing in the photo, and stood upright the 10.8 cm would be the depth it needs in the cupboard. Inferring the grilling surface from the outer dimensions would be wrong: the frame and handle bar are included in them.
In detail: how a contact grill cooks from two sides
On a grate or in a pan, the heat comes from one side. The food has to be turned, and the upper half only finishes cooking in the meantime. On a contact grill, a hot surface touches both sides. The heat therefore enters from above and below at the same time, so a piece 2 cm thick is, as far as the heat is concerned, only 1 cm thick. That is why nothing needs turning on a contact grill, and thin food is done correspondingly quickly.
This only works if the upper plate really rests on the food. That is what the floating hinge is for: the lid does not fold around a fixed point but lifts with the food. In our assessment, a burger and a courgette slice next to it still do not make equal contact, because the lid is a rigid plate and follows the highest piece.
The ridges have two jobs. The meat only touches the raised ribs, which is where the grill marks that Tefal advertises form. Between the ribs the fat drains away, and because the plate slopes by 7°, it runs forward into the tray instead of pooling under the meat. With fat that can run off, the meat fries less in its own juices. We have no measured values for how much fat actually ends up in the tray.
Can you set the temperature on the GC241D?
According to everything Tefal publishes, no. The British data sheet lists an on/off switch, two lights and 0 cooking programmes, and the pictorial instructions show no control. Earlier versions of this page spoke of a thermostat control. This could not be substantiated anywhere.
Tefal explicitly lists the sister model Inicio Classic as “Adjustable thermostat: No”. For the GC241D this line appears nowhere, but nothing in the documents points to a control.
What this means in the kitchen: after switching on, the grill preheats for 5 to 10 minutes, as image 7 of the pictorial instructions shows with a clock and thermometer. When the ready indicator lights up, you put the food on (image 8, a pictogram with “OK”). After that, time is the only variable left to you. A thin schnitzel and a thick beef steak lie on the same plate at the same temperature, and the difference comes solely from when you open the lid. The instructions contain no cooking times for individual foods.
The Tefal OptiGrill GC702D takes exactly this decision off your hands: its sensor adapts duration and temperature to the thickness of the food and signals the doneness by colour. With the GC241D, control stays with you. For thick pieces we would use a probe thermometer and measure after the meat has been moved to a board with wooden or plastic tongs; which values apply to which doneness is in our core temperature chart. The thermometer does not belong on the plate, for reasons given in the next section.
Setting up, connecting, cleaning: what the safety instructions require
The most important point first, because the previous version of this page had it wrong: according to the safety instructions, the appliance is “intended exclusively for domestic use in enclosed rooms”. That rules out balcony and garden.
Before first use, you remove packaging, stickers and all accessories inside and outside. You should read the instructions and keep them to hand; according to Tefal they apply to all models.
Electrically, Tefal requires an earthed socket, and the power supply must match the current and voltage on the underside of the appliance. An extension cable must have at least the same cross-section and be earthed. You unroll the power cable fully before connecting it, and with or without an extension it must not obstruct foot traffic. You never route it over a sharp edge or a heat source such as hobs or a gas cooker. You never pull the plug out by the cable. If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by the manufacturer, its service department or a similarly qualified person.
At 2000 W and 230 V, just under 8.7 A flows by calculation. Household circuits in Germany are usually protected at 16 A. A kettle on the same circuit may therefore already be too much. The calculation is ours, not Tefal’s.
On placement: not in corners and not against a wall, so the appliance does not overheat. Not directly on sensitive surfaces such as a glass table, tablecloth or varnished furniture, and not on soft surfaces. Not on or near slippery or hot surfaces. The grill is not heated in a vertical position, and you never run it empty. How the latter squares with the preheating in image 7 is not stated in either document; we read it as meaning that you load the food once the ready indicator comes on and do not leave the grill running empty.
The accessible surfaces can reach high temperatures during operation, and a symbol on the appliance warns of the hot surface. If a burn occurs, you run cold water over it straight away and call a doctor if necessary.
Several prohibitions apply to the plates, which Tefal justifies by protecting the coating and the appliance. No metal utensils, which image 9 of the pictorial instructions also shows with a crossed-out fork and knife. Do not place cooking utensils on the cooking surfaces. Never cut food directly on the cooking surfaces. No aluminium foil or other objects between plate and food, and do not grill food wrapped in foil. Never prepare flambéed recipes on it.
When cleaning, you first pull the plug. You clean the plates with a damp sponge and the appliance body with a soft, damp cloth. The housing must not be cleaned or covered with a wet cloth or sponge: you wring out the cloth or sponge thoroughly beforehand so that no water drips from it. Metal scourers and scouring powder are off limits; the pictorial instructions show a crossed-out sponge for this in image 3 and image 14. You never immerse the appliance and cable in water, they must not go in the dishwasher, and you do not hold the grill under running water either.
Tefal’s British care FAQ adds two points. For stubborn residues it recommends a wooden or plastic spatula. And cleaning agents that are abrasive or contain alcohol or fuel can damage the appliance.
The drip tray is the only part allowed in the dishwasher. You must never touch it while the appliance is hot; if it fills up during grilling, you let the appliance cool down first and then empty it. You take worn-out appliances to a collection point in your town or municipality.
What Tefal leaves open
After the British data sheet, German safety instructions, pictorial instructions and Amazon catalogue, these points remain open:
- a temperature range or maximum temperature of the plates
- material of the plates and type of non-stick coating
- weight and dimensions from the manufacturer, there are only the Amazon values
- scope of delivery, such as a recipe booklet
- a German product page for the GC241D12 and its EAN
- spare part prices in Germany
- cooking times for steak, burger or sandwich
- electricity consumption per grilling session
- country of manufacture
- market launch, only the Amazon date is known
Three alternatives from our catalogue
| Model | The difference | Price | Our rating | Choose this one if |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tefal GC241D contact grill (this one) | fixed plates, no documented control, 0 programmes | approx. €58 | 8.0 | you grill indoors for a family and keep an eye on the time yourself |
| Tefal OptiGrill GC702D | sensor measures thickness, colour signal shows doneness | approx. €99 | 8.9 | you want to bring steaks to a specific doneness without watching the clock |
| George Foreman Fit Grill Medium | no documented wattage or surface area | approx. €65.64 | 8.1 | you mostly grill for one or two people |
| Landmann electric grill trolley EG-II-590 | outdoor grill trolley, two zones from 100 to 300 °C | approx. €550 | 9.4 | you want to grill electrically on a balcony or terrace |
The prices are guide values from our price boxes and change constantly; the GC241D price dates from 21 October 2026. The rating is our editorial assessment of the available data; we have not grilled on any of the four appliances.
When the GC241D fits and when another grill does
First, the location. If you want to grill electrically on the balcony because house rules ban open flames, the GC241D is wrong for you, as it is intended for enclosed rooms only. For outdoors, our comparison offers the Landmann EG-II-590, at approx. €550 (the GC241D: approx. €58) however a completely different class of appliance, a grill trolley instead of a tabletop device.
Then the question of who decides the doneness. If you grill meat of varying thickness and do not want to watch the clock, the OptiGrill GC702D gives you the sensor. It costs approx. €99 with us against approx. €58 for the GC241D and is clearly ahead in our rating at 8.9. If you mainly make sandwiches, vegetables and thin pieces, in our assessment you do not need this sensor.
The number of people speaks more for the GC241D. Tefal gives space for up to 6 people. The George Foreman Fit Grill Medium is in our price box at approx. €65.64 and, at 8.1, is almost level. We could not substantiate the Foreman’s power and surface area, so a direct size comparison is not possible; for a household of four we would stay with the Tefal, whose plate dimensions are fixed.
That leaves the kitchen itself. The socket has to be close to where you set it up, the short cable leaves little room for manoeuvre, and an extension must meet the conditions given above. If you have little worktop space, you benefit from the upright storage; then only a narrow gap of a good 10 cm needs to be free in the cupboard, if the Amazon dimensions describe the appliance.
Who is it suitable for?
For households that want to grill sandwiches and flat cuts of meat quickly in the kitchen and for whom approx. €58 is the upper limit. For people who like to decide for themselves when something is done, the missing control is no loss.
The GC241D is wrong for anything commercial. Tefal intends the appliance exclusively for private households, and according to the safety instructions the warranty does not extend to staff kitchen areas in shops, offices or other working environments, to farmhouses, to use by guests in hotels, motels and other accommodation-type environments, or to bed and breakfasts. For commercial or improper use, the manufacturer accepts no liability. If you are buying for an office kitchenette or a holiday flat you rent out, you are better off looking elsewhere.
