What is behind the designation GC750D16

The OptiGrill Elite is an electric contact grill: the food lies between two heated plates, and the upper one folds open. Tefal states 2,000 W. On the product page, Tefal describes the Elite as an intelligent indoor contact grill. In our electric grills category we list it as an indoor contact grill, and our price box shows approx. €149.

We have not handled the device and have not grilled anything on it. The details come from the German Tefal pages (retrieved on 14 October 2026), from Tefal’s safety sheet and from the Amazon catalogue. What we conclude from them, we mark as our assessment.

The type designation is less clear-cut than it looks. Amazon lists the ASIN B07WXXFRSK in the title as GC750D16, the catalogue field for the model says only GC750D, with a release date of 21 August 2019. At Tefal, the GC750D16 now has only a service and accessories page and can no longer be bought. The variant sold is the GC750D12, in the Tefal shop for €169.99 (retrieved 14 October 2026). The feature tables of both types agree on power, plate dimensions, surface area and cable. The product texts and the programme list also appear on the D16 service page. Only colour, cable type, the statement about the non-removable cable and the cast aluminium plate material are known to us solely from the D12 page; whether the D16 differs there, the pages do not say. That our Amazon link really leads to the D16 is proven only by the Amazon title, because the Tefal pages we reviewed do not link to an Amazon shop.

Construction and connection

According to Tefal, the body is made of stainless steel and the handle of thermoplastic. In our product photo the lid is silver and the base black; Tefal lists the D12 in silver and in black as a further colour.

The ridged plates are made of cast aluminium and are non-stick coated. They can be removed, as can the drip tray. On the product page Tefal advertises “healthier grilling made easy”; we do not derive a health claim from that. According to Tefal, the sloped plates let excess fat drain away, and in the photo the lower plate slopes down towards the front, where the drip tray sits.

It is operated via capacitive touch buttons and a digital display. As a doneness indicator, Tefal’s feature table lists a screen with grill assistant and countdown. There are also an adjustable thermostat and a temperature indicator light.

The electrical data: 220 to 240 V at 50 to 60 Hz, 2,000 W rated power (Tefal additionally lists the range 1,830 to 2,180 W), 0.2 W when switched off. The power cable measures 0.8 m, cannot be detached and has a plug of the type EUR. According to the feature table, the device cannot be stored upright. According to Tefal, the box contains the device and a recipe book; further recipes are available in the free My Tefal app.

In detail: what the thickness measurement does

With a contact grill, heat reaches the food from both sides, so thickness above all decides when a piece is done. A fixed timer then suits only a single thickness. Tefal advertises the Elite with “100% guaranteed grilling results” and a measurement “accurate to the millimetre”; without the device we cannot verify either. According to the manufacturer, the technology measures the thickness and quantity of the food and adjusts grilling time and temperature automatically, and the display shows which doneness level has been reached: rare, medium or well done.

Twelve automatic programmes are listed in the feature table of the D16 page: burger, sandwich, fish, seafood, potato, pepper, red meat, chicken, sausage, bacon, aubergine and tomato. There is no dedicated steak programme; we would classify a beef steak under red meat, a panini under sandwich.

There are also a manual mode and a frozen mode. In manual mode you set temperature and time yourself: the display first stays on the temperature, pressing OK leads to the time setting, which you choose with the arrows and confirm with OK. According to Tefal’s FAQ, the cooking sensors are not active there, which is why the frozen food setting cannot be used in manual mode.

A grill boost function is on board. Tefal describes its result as juicy inside and crisp outside, with grill marks.

Is the surface enough for four people?

According to Tefal, yes: the plates measure 30 x 20 cm, together 600 cm² of grilling surface, and Tefal gives the Elite as suitable for up to 4 people. How many pieces fit side by side depends on their size. For larger groups, Tefal offers the Elite XL (up to 8 people).

A plate of this size roughly corresponds to a DIN A4 sheet (the standard paper size in Germany and the EU). Our calculation: 600 cm² divided by four people gives 150 cm² per person, about 15 x 10 cm.

Cleaning and set-up according to the safety sheet

We could not load the Elite’s instruction manual (IFU, over 10 MB). The notes come from Tefal’s safety sheet and from the FAQ on the GC750D16 service page. The sheet is a general OptiGrill sheet (header “OPTIGRILL without EE”) and, by its own statement, applies to every version of the device depending on the accessories supplied. We stay close to its wording and reproduce the points on care, operation and set-up; first use, fat and cable are covered in the FAQ.

Under “After use” there are six points:

  • Unplug the mains plug.
  • Let the device cool down for at least 2 hours before cleaning.
  • Clean the cooking plates with a sponge, hot water and washing-up liquid.
  • Do not clean the heating element; if it is dirty, first let it cool down completely and then wipe it with a dry cloth.
  • Clean the control panel, which Tefal describes as fragile, only with a dry, soft cloth, wiping and drying it, not with a damp sponge, because that can impair its functions.
  • Store the device and cable in a dry place.

The FAQ is milder on cooling and recommends approx. 45 minutes; we would stick to the 2 hours from the sheet. In addition, according to the FAQ, you remove coarse residues with a wooden or plastic spatula and clean the grill and components with a cloth soaked in hot water. Abrasive products and products containing alcohol or petrol are off limits, you do not immerse the grill in water, and the power cable also does not belong in any liquid. According to the feature table, the plates and the drip tray may go in the dishwasher. Before each use, all parts and accessories that come into contact with food should be clean.

For plates and coating, the sheet lists a whole series of rules. You use only wooden or plastic utensils, no scouring sponge and no abrasive cleaner, you do not place cooking utensils on the cooking surfaces and you never cut directly on the plates. You should never run the device empty, and you must not heat the empty device beyond the stated preheating time. Aluminium foil belongs neither between plates and food nor between plates and heating elements, and you should not cook food wrapped in foil. Tefal rules out flambéed dishes because they can damage the product.

In operation the plates stay firmly in place: without both plates the device may be neither operated nor preheated, you do not move hot plates, do not put them under water and do not place them on fragile surfaces. You must not leave the grill open while heating or cooking, and you never transport it hot or in operation; you do not carry it by the handle or power cable in any case. Accessible surfaces can get hot; Tefal requires that you never touch them and always use the handles.

You must never leave the device unattended in use. Children from 8 years and people with reduced physical, sensory or mental abilities or a lack of experience may use it only after instruction or under supervision and must understand the hazards; children must not play with it. Children carry out cleaning and user maintenance only if they are older than 8 years and supervised, and the device and cable must be kept out of reach of children under 8 years. You cool burns immediately with cold water and call a doctor if necessary. Cooking fumes can be dangerous for animals with particularly sensitive respiratory systems, such as birds; Tefal recommends that bird owners keep them away from the cooking area.

On set-up, the sheet mainly says what you should not do: not outdoors; not under a piece of furniture fixed to a wall or shelf, and not next to flammable materials such as blinds, curtains or drapes; not in a corner or against a wall, so that nothing overheats; never directly on sensitive surfaces such as a glass table, tablecloth or varnished furniture, and not on soft ones such as a tea towel; not on or near slippery or hot surfaces, and do not let the cable hang over a heat source such as a hob or gas cooker. Before use you check that the device stands stably. Our guide grilling on a balcony clarifies what your tenancy agreement and house rules allow; for this device that is moot, because Tefal rules out outdoor use.

It is connected to an earthed socket, and the voltage and rated power on the underside of the device must match the power supply. The sheet wants the plug inserted only while you are using the grill.

Spare parts and warranty

For the GC750D16, Tefal lists the drip tray TS-01043390 for €4.99 and the lower plate TS-01043490 for €14.99 (accessories shop, retrieved 14 October 2026). The upper plate TS-01043480 also costs €14.99 but is currently unavailable; according to the Tefal page it should be available again from 19 October 2026.

As accessories, Tefal lists for the Elite a snack and baking tray XA7258 (€42.99), waffle plates with ladle XA7248 (€69.99, currently unavailable) and plancha plates XA7288 (€69.99). According to Tefal, the plancha plates are intended for fragile ingredients such as fish, vegetables or seafood. For all plates, the safety sheet says: they must be stable, well positioned and securely fixed to the device, you use them only with the device they were made for (not in the oven, not on a gas or electric hob), and only ones that were supplied or bought from an authorised customer service centre. Tefal requires the same for accessories, and damaged cooking plates must not be used.

The D12 product page lists the Elite as “repairable for 15 years” and names 6,200 repair partners worldwide. The repairability page says the availability of spare parts at a fair price has been extended from 10 to 15 years; this applies to new products from 2022 and to products in current production.

According to Tefal, the warranty period in Germany is 2 years for the entire product range, but only for domestic and private use; for commercial purposes 1 year applies. The safety sheet, by contrast, says the warranty does not apply in these environments: staff kitchens in shops, offices and other working environments, farms, use by guests in hotels, motels and other accommodation, and bed-and-breakfast-type environments. Both statements appear like this at Tefal. A repair carried out yourself voids the warranty. In a warranty case you take the product to a Tefal repair centre or to the point of sale; for online purchases you contact the retailer.

The prices are guide values from our price boxes and may differ in the shop; the rating is our editorial assessment, not a measurement result. The GC722D no longer appears in the list in Tefal’s OptiGrill category as of 14 October 2026, and the Landmann belongs to a different design: it grills on a grate instead of between two plates.

What Tefal does not state

The following are missing on the Tefal pages we reviewed:

  • Weight (the Amazon catalogue lists exactly 1.0 kg, which looks like a placeholder for a 2,000 W device with cast aluminium plates and a stainless steel body; we do not adopt the value)
  • External dimensions (only the Amazon catalogue lists 36.3 x 34.1 x 18.0 cm as length, width and height, without confirmation from Tefal)
  • Preheating time and cooking times per programme
  • Minimum and maximum thickness of the food in centimetres
  • Duration, timing and temperature of the grill boost
  • Maximum temperature of the device (only the category text on tefal.de mentions temperatures of up to 240 degrees Celsius for the OptiGrill Elite; the device page has no value for it)
  • Minimum distances to walls and furniture in centimetres (the safety sheet only has prohibitions such as not placing it in a corner)
  • Material of the non-stick coating (whether it contains PTFE or PFAS is unknown)
  • Country of origin and production site
  • Noise level and signal tones
  • The parts that the safety sheet marks with a logo (food that has come into contact with them should not be eaten)
  • Model list for the 15-year spare parts commitment (whether the GC750D16 falls under it is open)
  • Explanation of the feature fields “Table grill function: No” and “Time to reach off state: 10 min”
  • Warranty period specifically for the GC750D16 (only the general rule is available)

Who is the Elite right for, and who not?

The Elite suits a kitchen with a socket if you grill for up to four people and prefer to read the doneness off the display rather than turning by feel. In our assessment, anyone who always eats meat well done gets less from the sensor than a group where one person wants it rare and another well done. Whether a contact grill is the right design at all is clarified by the Grill Finder.

Two calculations help with the decision. For electricity, our rough calculation applies: 2,000 W at 230 V is around 8.7 A. A household circuit is often protected with 16 A, which corresponds to 3,680 W, and a kettle on the same circuit can therefore trip it. On budget, with the plancha plates from the Tefal accessories you end up at around €219, so according to our price boxes close to the price of the Elite XL.

The Elite is wrong for outdoors, balcony and terrace included, and for the office or bed-and-breakfast kitchen that the safety sheet excludes. Anyone who regularly grills for more than four people at once pays €76 more for the Elite XL according to our price boxes.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about Tefal OptiGrill Elite GC750D16

Short, clear answers about buying, using and caring for Tefal OptiGrill Elite GC750D16.

Can I use the OptiGrill Elite on a balcony or terrace?

No, we advise against it. The safety sheet prohibits use outdoors and rules out charcoal and similar fuels. The sheet does not explicitly mention balconies and terraces; we count them as outdoors. If you want to grill outside with electricity, the Landmann EG-II-590 is an electric freestanding grill that Landmann approves for outdoor use according to its instructions.

What happens if the food is too thick?

If the food is too thick, the safety system switches the device off. If the display shows “OK for manual mode”, Tefal's FAQ suggests one of two options: you confirm with OK and carry on cooking in manual mode, or you take the food out and cut it smaller so the sensor can handle its thickness. The Tefal pages and the safety sheet we reviewed give no maximum thickness in centimetres; we could not load the instruction manual.

What do the error messages Err1 to Err13 mean?

According to Tefal, Err1 to Err8 indicate that the device was stored or started up too cold: unplug it, wait a few minutes, plug it back in and press the on/off button. For Err9 to Err13, you disconnect the device from the mains and call customer service. If it switches itself off, it was left open too long while cooking or stood idle too long after preheating.

Why does the grill smoke or smell during the first preheating?

According to the safety sheet, slight odour and smoke may occur in the first minutes of first use. Beforehand, you wash the plates, apply a little oil and wipe them with a soft cloth. If it smokes later during preheating, Tefal's FAQ names insufficiently cleaned plates as a possible cause: soak for about 30 minutes in hot water with degreasing washing-up liquid, clean both sides with a sponge or brush, rinse, then put them in the dishwasher.

Does the display speak German, and can the language be changed?

Tefal does not state anywhere which language is set at the factory; the German FAQ quotes the messages OK to start cooking, OK to stop cooking and OK for manual mode in English. You can only change it while the display shows “Hello” (approx. 2 seconds): you switch the device on, press the on/off button and immediately afterwards the frozen food button, choose a language with the arrow buttons and confirm with OK.

Does fat spatter with sausages or poultry with skin?

It can, yes: according to the safety sheet, certain types of meat with skin, such as whole sausages or poultry, and large pieces of meat can cause oil or liquid to spit out. Tefal recommends piercing them with a knife or fork before cooking. You do not remove the fat tray during cooking; if it fills up while cooking, you let the device cool down before emptying it.

Is the power cable long enough, and may I use an extension cable or a timer switch?

The cable is 0.8 m long and fixed to the device. With an extension cable, Tefal requires a suitable cable diameter, an earthed socket and a routing that nobody can trip over. According to the safety sheet, an external timer switch or a separate remote control system is not intended; we count a smart plug as one of these. If the cable is damaged, the device stays off, and only the manufacturer, customer service or a similarly qualified person may replace it.

Which variants of the Elite exist, and do spare parts fit across them?

Tefal's spare parts page lists four devices of the Elite line: GC750D (type GC750D12), GC750D (type GC750D16), contact grill GC7508 (type GC750812) and GC7508 (type GC750810). According to Tefal, the drip tray and lower plate are listed for all four. There is also an instructions page for the GC750D30 on tefal.com; we did not find a product page for it on tefal.de. The pages do not say how the variants differ.
