A grill trolley with a box instead of a kettle
Strattore sells the Charcoal Grill XL on Amazon under three designations at once: “Grillwagen” (grill trolley), “Standgrill mit Deckel” (freestanding grill with lid) and “quadratischer Barbecue Gartengrill aus Eisen” (square barbecue garden grill made of iron). What is meant is a mobile charcoal grill of the familiar design. At the bottom is a frame with wheels, on it sits an angular firebox with a hinged lid, and beside it a shelf. As places of use the title lists garden, camping and patio, and as food meat, vegetables or fish. In our catalogue it sits in the category charcoal grills, among the basic grill trolleys.
Our price box gives approx. €100 (Amazon page on 20/10/2026: €99.90); the current price may differ. In our comparison the Strattore scores 7.7 out of 10 points.
One caveat up front, because it shapes everything else. The brand’s website was not reachable during our research, and we found no instruction manual or data sheet even at retailers. What is written here about the device comes from the Amazon catalogue and the product photo. For a grill that holds open embers, that is thin, and where it affects the buying decision, we say so.
What the photo shows and what the dimensions mean
According to Amazon, the grill measures approx. 116 x 56.5 x 105 cm (width, depth, height) and weighs approx. 24.79 kg. It is made of powder-coated iron and is black.
The 116 cm is an overall envelope dimension. In the product image, a side shelf made of slats extends well beyond the firebox on the right, and a bar handle sticks out on the left. Both are included in the width. How wide the firebox alone is cannot be read from that.
The body is an angular box, not a barrel and not a sphere. The lid opens towards the back and has a bar handle on top. In its right side wall sits a round rosette with spokes that looks like a rotary damper for the exhaust air. Above the main grate, a second, narrower grate level stands on wire brackets. At the front of the firebox you can see a large hatch with a coiled spring handle, below it a silver strip with a handle, and to the right of that an angled lever with the same spring handle. The frame stands on two legs on the left and on two wheels on the right. Between the legs is a grid shelf, and under the side shelf hang three hooks.
Food, tongs, tea towel, glove and the charcoal sack in the picture are decoration.
We only assign the components behind the hatch, strip and lever with caution. The catalogue text mentions a charcoal hatch, a removable ash collection tray and a crank on the outside of the grill trolley. The front hatch fits the charcoal hatch, the strip fits an ash drawer, the lever fits the crank. Nothing confirms this assignment except the picture. On the material, only the word iron is given, with no sheet thickness and no statement of which parts are meant.
In detail: the grate moves, the charcoal stays put
According to the Amazon text, the crank sits on the outside of the grill trolley, and with it “das Grillrost in der Höhe beliebig verstellt werden” (the grill grate can be adjusted in height as desired). In this the Strattore differs from the grill trolleys we compare it with below. With the BELONID, the Tepro Toronto Click and the ACTIVA Angular Smart, the crank raises and lowers not the grate but the charcoal pan.
For the distance between embers and food, both come down to the same thing. Over charcoal, most of the heat reaches the meat as radiation, and that falls off quickly with distance. Just above the embers a steak browns in a short time, a few centimetres higher a chicken leg cooks through more slowly instead of charring on the outside.
What differs is what happens alongside. When the charcoal pan moves up, the grate stays at its working height, and the distance to the lid does not change. If the grate moves instead, the food comes closer to the lid when it is closed. You also lift the weight of the loaded grate as you crank. This does not count against the design, you should just know it before you crank a full grate of spare ribs upwards.
“Beliebig” (as desired) does not necessarily mean infinitely variable, by the way. Whether the crank clicks into positions or runs freely, how long the adjustment travel is and whether the grate holds by itself in every position is not stated in any source we could find.
According to Strattore, the thermometer sits in the lid and “zeigt die genaue Temperatur im Inneren an, wenn die Haube geschlossen ist” (shows the exact temperature inside when the lid is closed). The manufacturer calls it “die ideale Hilfe damit das BBQ nicht anbrennt” (the ideal aid so the BBQ does not burn). For indirect cooking, meaning meat beside rather than over the embers, an angular firebox is in our assessment well suited: you push the charcoal to one half and put the food on the other, and the closed lid holds the heat. When that pays off is explained in the guide direct and indirect heat.
With the lid closed, it is mainly the air that governs how hot the charcoal burns. How much intake air reaches the firebox at the bottom and whether the rosette on the lid can be turned is not described anywhere. That leaves you three control variables that certainly work: amount of charcoal, grate height and lid. If the charcoal is slow to catch or only glows on the outside, our guide charcoal will not light properly helps.
How big is the Strattore XL’s grilling area?
We do not know, and it cannot be calculated either. A grate size in centimetres or square centimetres appears neither in the title nor in the bullet points. You should not derive a grate size from the width of 116 cm, because the side shelf and handle are included in it.
Two grill trolleys from our catalogue with a nearly identical envelope help put this in context. BELONID gives its charcoal grill outer dimensions of 113 x 55 x 104 cm, an enamelled main grate of 56 x 42.5 cm and a chrome-plated warming rack of 53.5 x 24.5 cm. In the manual for the Toronto Click, Tepro gives overall dimensions of approx. 115 x 67 x 107 cm and a grilling area of approx. 56 x 41.5 cm. Clearly smaller is the ACTIVA Angular Smart: 965 x 570 x 980 mm envelope and a 430 x 320 mm grate according to the manual.
We would not transfer any of these figures. A similar envelope does not mean the firebox is similarly large, because how much width goes to the shelf and handle differs from device to device. The photo is not a tape measure either: it is an advertising image with no scale, taken at an angle from the front.
For how many people the grate is enough, we therefore cannot tell you credibly. And whether the second level that stands above the grate in the photo is in the box, you will only know after unpacking.
Shelf, hatch, wheels: the features in detail
According to the Amazon text, the shelf is “bis zu 10 kg belastbar” (rated for up to 10 kg). Plates, a bowl of marinade and the barbecue tools are well below that. A full 10 kg bag of briquettes would already use up the limit, while a crate of drinks with glass bottles is usually above it. In the photo only the one shelf on the right is visible, plus the grid shelf at the bottom of the frame.
For the charcoal hatch the text gives only the word. On grill trolleys, a front hatch like this usually serves to add charcoal without taking off the loaded grate. Whether it works that way here depends on how the hatch relates to the charcoal tray, and no picture shows that.
According to the manufacturer’s text, a bottle opener sits on the housing. The grill grate and the ash collection tray can be removed, and “herausnehmbare Einsätze” (removable inserts) are mentioned in general terms as well.
That leaves the “Rollen für den handlichen Transport” (wheels for easy transport). With two wheels on one side and two legs on the other, it works like a wheelbarrow: you lift the grill by the left handle and push it on the wheels. At approx. 24.79 kg you carry a good part of the weight yourself. On paving and patio slabs that works, while on soft lawn or gravel small wheels tend to sink in. Locking brakes are not needed with this arrangement, because the legs hold the trolley.
Care and safety when the manual is missing
On cleaning, Strattore writes one sentence: thanks to the removable parts, “die Einzelteile und der Grill selbst kinderleicht zu reinigen” (the individual parts and the grill itself are very easy to clean). With what, whether with water and whether in the dishwasher is not stated. For this device there is therefore no manufacturer care advice we could cite, and we do not invent any.
Which brush the grate tolerates depends on its material, and we do not know that. A chrome-plated or enamelled surface takes a coarse wire brush worse than a cast-iron grate. If in doubt, use a brass brush or a wooden scraper and clean while the grate is still warm.
The following applies in principle to every charcoal grill, whatever the brand:
- Use only outdoors, never in a garage, tent, garden shed or conservatory. Smouldering charcoal produces carbon monoxide, which you can neither smell nor see.
- Do not use methylated spirits, petrol or other liquid accelerants to light it. A chimney starter or solid firelighters are enough.
- Place the grill on level, non-flammable ground, away from hedges, wooden walls and awnings.
- Never leave burning charcoal unattended, keep children and pets away, and do not move the grill while in use.
- Put ash into a metal bucket with a lid first. Even ash that looks cold often still smoulders inside.
The powder coating protects the iron only as long as it is intact. Where it is scratched or flakes off, surface rust sets in when it rains, most likely at edges, on the frame and in the firebox, where the embers put the most strain on the coating. Up to what temperature the coating holds is unknown. What you can do about incipient rust and when a part can no longer be saved is covered in the guide grill is rusting, what to do.
What the manufacturer does not state
For the Strattore Charcoal Grill XL, the following is missing in all the sources we could use: the grate size and with it any grilling area, whether a warming rack is included, the material of the grill grate, lid and charcoal tray, the sheet thickness, whether the crank works infinitely and how far it adjusts the grate, the ventilation with intake and exhaust air, measuring range and accuracy of the thermometer, maximum temperature, heat-up time and charcoal quantity, the working height, size and number of shelves, type of wheels, the full scope of delivery including cover, assembly time and tools, the heat resistance of the powder coating, all setup and safety instructions, warranty terms beyond the statutory warranty, spare parts, country of origin and details about the company itself. What we read from the photo is marked as such.

When to choose this grill, when another
The BELONID charcoal grill stands at approx. €109.99 in our price boxes, the Strattore at approx. €99.90. For that money, BELONID documents things that remain open with the Strattore: the grate sizes, a four-way ventilation control, a working height of 82 cm and two plastic wheels. In our rating it is 0.2 points ahead. If you want to know what you are getting before you buy, we would go for the BELONID despite the slightly higher price.
The Tepro Toronto Click costs approx. €139 in our price box. For that you get a manual that certifies the device to DIN EN 1860-1, the European standard for grills using solid fuels (it applies in the EU), and that gives a heat resistance of up to 320 °C for the paint finish. At approx. 25.4 kg according to the manual, it is barely heavier than the Strattore.
The ACTIVA Angular Smart stands at approx. €94.89 in our price box, the Strattore at approx. €99.90, and weighs 15.5 kg according to the manual. If you often load the grill into the car, for example for the campsite named in the Strattore title, you lift around 9 kg less with the ACTIVA. In return, its grate is smaller than with BELONID and Tepro, as described above under grilling area.
Our assessment of the Strattore itself: it suits you if you are looking for a grill trolley with lid, shelf and wheels for the garden or patio, are happy to change the grate height by crank, and can rely on details from the Amazon catalogue. How much food fits on the grate at once cannot be said for lack of a grate size.
We would not choose it if you need a grate size before buying, for example because you regularly grill for ten people, or if you want a manufacturer’s manual to hand before you light charcoal for the first time. If you are still torn between grill trolley, kettle grill and gas grill, the grill finder gives you a shortlist.
