The Tamber is a round charcoal tabletop grill from Feuerhand: a matt black steel cylinder with a wooden lid. On Amazon the listing is called Feuerhand Tamber Tischgrill schwarz and costs approx. €35 (as of September 2026). In our charcoal grills category, it is one of the tabletop grills.
We have not handled the Tamber and have not grilled anything on it. We compare data, and the data comes from the product page and the brand pages of Feuerhand (read on 14.10.2026), from the 2023 instruction manual and from the Amazon catalogue; the product photo comes on top of that. Our own conclusions are marked as such in the text.
Feuerhand is a lantern brand. According to the brand page, Hermann and Ernst Nier founded their own production site for storm lanterns in 1893, and since 2014 the brand has belonged to Petromax GmbH in Magdeburg, which the instructions list as the manufacturer of the Tamber. As of 14.10.2026, the manufacturer’s shop lists 18 products. The Tamber is the only grill among them; the rest are lanterns, lantern accessories, vouchers and merchandise. The shop therefore has no larger grill model from the brand that you could move up to later.
The link on this page leads to the Tiefschwarz (deep black) variant (model number TAMBER-SCHWARZ). The manufacturer’s page lists only Ruby Red and Cobalt Blue; black is missing there. We therefore take dimensions, material and accessories from the instructions and the product page, and none of the sources confirms that they apply word for word to the black variant as well.
Construction, material and dimensions
In the Amazon photo, a light lid with a wood grain sits on a low, matt black cylinder. The Feuerhand logo and the Tamber lettering are on the front, a curved slot can be seen in the wall on the left and right, and the lower edge is cut out in a flat arc at the front. The slots are probably the side ventilation openings that the instructions mention.
The instructions list the following as included: the cylindrical body made of powder-coated steel, a burner and a heat shield made of stainless steel, the enamelled grill grate, the lid with logo, a starter pack of Feuerhand tabletop grill charcoal and the instruction manual. Whether the Amazon offer includes the starter pack remains open, because the listing gives no scope of delivery.
The sources contradict each other on the lid. The 2023 instructions say bamboo, the 2022 ones say wood, the product page speaks of a wooden lid, and Amazon of a wooden lid and natural wood. In the photo, the board shows a grain with a dark knot; to us it looks more like solid wood than bamboo. That is an impression from the picture, not a material specification.
According to the instructions, the burner and heat shield change colour with the heat and develop their own patina, which is normal for stainless steel and not a material defect. At the same time, the instructions warn that rust can form even on stainless steel with incorrect use, care and storage.
On dimensions: the instructions give 20 cm body diameter, 19.3 cm for the grate, 14 cm height with lid and 2.1 kg total weight including lid and starter pack of charcoal. The Amazon catalogue confirms the weight with 4.63 pounds, which converts to around 2.1 kg. Its dimensions of 10.5 x 10.5 x 14 cm, on the other hand, do not fit: the photo shows a body that is wider than it is tall, and the manufacturer states a diameter of 20 cm. We follow the manufacturer.
In detail: charcoal in the burner, air through the ventilation openings
Without a fan, natural draught decides how quickly embers burn through: hot air rises and fresh air flows in from below. On the Tamber it enters through the side ventilation openings in the body, evenly according to the instructions. Thanks to the openings, the product page promises even grilling at a constant temperature.
The procedure according to the instructions is short. The contents of the starter pack, or one portion of charcoal from the refill pack, go into the burner, and it is lit with a match or a stick lighter. In the first minutes it may smoke slightly, and after about 15 to 20 minutes the charcoal is fully glowing. Only then does the grate go on the grill, it may get briefly hot, and grilling begins.
The grate is enamelled and has drainage grooves. Enamel is a glass layer fused onto metal; Feuerhand links it with non-stick properties, and the instructions with gentle frying and cooking without sticking. The grooves channel food liquids to the inside, and according to Amazon they also distribute the heat evenly. That matters for smoke: fat on glowing charcoal smokes (general grilling physics, not a manufacturer statement), and whether the grooves direct it next to the embers or onto them is not stated in any source.
Feuerhand promises reduced smoke and low spark flight, both without a figure. Reduced does not mean smokeless. Our assessment: if you grill on a balcony next to neighbours, you should not assume the Tamber is smokeless. What helps against heavy smoke is covered in the guide Grill smoking too much.
How many people does the Tamber serve?
Two. In the instructions it is called a compact tabletop grill for two, and the product page writes of a small occasion and an evening for two. Figures for three or four people are missing.
The grate has a diameter of 19.3 cm and is therefore narrower than an A4 sheet, which measures 21 cm. Feuerhand gives no grilling area in cm², and we do not calculate one: a grate has a rim and grooves, and how much of it is usable area for the food is not stated in any source. For more than two people it comes down to several rounds (our deduction from the diameter and the figure for two).
Charcoal, running costs and accessories
The fuel is fixed: Feuerhand tabletop grill charcoal with a natural ignition coating. According to the instructions, no additional firelighter is needed. One portion weighs around 140 g and lasts up to 1.5 hours; the product page adds: for a small group. The starter pack contains the first portion, and for further evenings there is a refill pack of 1 kg. That works out as seven full portions (1,000 g divided by 140 g gives 7.1) and therefore up to just over ten hours of burn time per pack, according to our calculation from the manufacturer’s figures.
What a portion costs cannot be worked out, because the manufacturer’s shop (18 products, as of 14.10.2026) lists no charcoal, and we do not use retailer prices. The guide Charcoal or briquettes compares fuels in general; for the Tamber it helps only to a limited extent, because the instructions prescribe Feuerhand charcoal.
On top of the purchase price comes what the instructions assume and what is not in the scope of delivery: heat-resistant gloves, a stick lighter or matches, a bucket of sand or a powder fire extinguisher.
The lid has a second job. Once cooled, according to the instructions it becomes the stand for the Baby Special 276 storm lantern, which sits in a precisely fitting recess; the lantern is not included. The manufacturer’s shop lists no further accessories for the Tamber, such as a hood, cast plates or a pizza stone.
Safety, placement and cleaning according to the instructions
This section follows pages 2 to 4 of the 2023 instructions, in the manufacturer’s order. We reproduce the lists in full and stay close to the wording.
Intended use: the Tamber is designed and constructed exclusively for outdoor use and may only be used in compliance with the safety, warning and operating instructions. The instructions are to be read before first use, especially the safety notes, kept, and passed on to any subsequent owner. Before first use, all parts are taken out of the packaging and wiped with a damp cloth, if needed with a little standard washing-up liquid. Then the grill, with the lid as a stand, goes on a level, stable surface outdoors, for example on the garden table.
Safety notes (page 2):
- Use outdoors only, never in enclosed spaces, as there is a risk of fire and suffocation there.
- Observe and comply with the fire protection regulations in force.
- Do not operate on heat-sensitive surfaces that are easily damaged. The tabletop grill should always stand stably on a level surface.
- During use, use the supplied bamboo lid as a stand or, alternatively, another suitable base.
- The Tamber and its parts get very hot in use. During use and for as long as it is hot, handle it only with heat-resistant gloves.
- Never leave it unattended, keep children and animals away.
- Keep a safety distance from flammable and heat-sensitive objects and materials.
- Do not cover it during use: risk of fire.
- Use only Feuerhand charcoal for lighting and operation.
- Use a stick lighter or match to light it. Additional firelighter is not required.
- Once the charcoal in the burner is lit, do not move the Tamber any more. For emergencies, keep a bucket of sand or a powder fire extinguisher ready.
- Wear suitable clothing: long, loose sleeves catch fire quickly.
- After use, first let the grill cool down completely and the charcoal burn out entirely before starting to clean.
- Dispose of ash and fuel residue only once they have cooled down completely, and observe the local disposal guidelines. Hot ash never belongs in household waste.
Safety notes on the tabletop grill charcoal (also page 2):
- Use in outdoor areas only.
- P 101: If medical advice is needed, have the packaging or label to hand.
- P 102: Keep out of the reach of children.
- P 280: Wear protective gloves, protective clothing, eye protection and face protection.
- The mixture is not classified as hazardous under Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (an EU regulation).
Care and cleaning (page 4):
- After use, let it cool down completely before cleaning and storing it.
- Never pour water on the charcoal or into the Tamber to extinguish it. Keep a bucket of sand or a powder fire extinguisher ready.
- After every use, remove ash residues thoroughly once they have cooled down completely: take out the grill grate, burner and heat shield, remove the ash from the body and burner and dispose of it properly.
- Clean all parts with water, a soft cloth and mild washing-up liquid, then dry them well.
- Never use wire brushes, steel wool or aggressive (corrosive) cleaning agents, as they can damage the material.
- The supplied bamboo lid must not go in the dishwasher. After every use, if it is dirty, it is cleaned with a damp cloth.
Storage (page 4):
- Do not leave it standing unprotected outdoors. Store it away only once the grill has cooled down completely, been cleared of ash and cleaned.
- Always store it dry and be sure to avoid condensation moisture.
- Do not store it near steel objects, for example tools, as this leads to contact corrosion.
- Cover the grill together with the bamboo lid as completely as possible to protect it from surface rust and moisture, or store it in a closed, dry room.
For disposal of the grill, the instructions refer to the local official regulations.
What the manufacturer does not state
The following are missing from the product page, the 2023 instructions and the Amazon listing:
- Maximum temperature, heat-up curve and temperature distribution on the grate
- Cooking times for bratwurst, steak or other food
- Size, number and adjustability of the ventilation openings
- A safety distance in centimetres, suitable table materials and the load capacity of the surface
- Behaviour in wind and rain, and smoke and spark flight in figures
- Base material of the enamelled grate, wall thicknesses of body, burner and heat shield, weight of the individual parts
- Composition, origin and certification of the Feuerhand charcoal
- The country of manufacture of the Tamber; the line Made in Germany seit 1893 in the side header of the brand page belongs to the brand, and as a place of manufacture only the Baby Special storm lantern is named there
- Spare parts for grate, burner, heat shield and lid
- A certification mark or a standard for barbecues, such as EN 1860 (a standard that applies in the EU)
What else comes into question?
| Model | The difference | Price | Our rating | Choose this one if |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Feuerhand Tamber (this one) | Charcoal in the burner, enamelled grate 19.3 cm in diameter, lid as a stand, no fan | approx. €35 | 8.2 | you grill for two at the table and accept the prescribed Feuerhand charcoal |
| Weber Smokey Joe Premium | Bowl and lid made of porcelain enamel, two vents, according to the Amazon listing | approx. €112 | 8.1 | you want to cook with the lid closed and control the air |
| LotusGrill G340 | Fan with 4 AA batteries or USB, grate approx. 320 mm in diameter, up to 5 people according to the manufacturer | approx. €179 | 8.8 | you regularly grill for more than two and want to get started quickly |
| Charmline folding grill 35 x 23 cm | Folded 34.7 x 23.0 x 7.6 cm, for 1 to 3 people according to the Amazon listing | approx. €40 | 7.5 | you want to store the grill flat and take it with you |
The prices are guide values from the price boxes in our reviews (as of September 2026), and the rating is our editorial assessment, not a measurement result. The details for Weber and Charmline come from their Amazon listings, those for the LotusGrill from the manufacturer; the table is therefore not suitable for comparing dimensions and weights. More models are shown in the charcoal grills ranking.
When the Tamber fits and when another grill does
From three people upwards, according to the manufacturer’s figures, the Tamber is the wrong size. The LotusGrill G340 is built for more; in our price boxes it costs approx. €179, so €144 more than the Tamber at approx. €35. On top of the higher price comes a difference in fuel: the LotusGrill instructions allow any ordinary charcoal, while the Tamber takes Feuerhand charcoal.
When heating up, the two are far apart. The Tamber needs the 15 to 20 minutes mentioned above until the charcoal is fully glowing. According to its instructions, the LotusGrill is ready for use after approx. 3 to 4 minutes because a fan drives the embers; if you grill spontaneously after work, that saves 11 to 17 minutes (our calculation). The times are not entirely comparable: with the Tamber, what counts is fully glowing charcoal, with the LotusGrill it is readiness for use after lighting with gel.
If you want to cook with the lid closed, look at the Weber Smokey Joe Premium, which stands at approx. €112 in our price box (on 21.10.2026 only from marketplace sellers on Amazon, Amazon itself did not offer it), against approx. €35 for the Tamber. According to the Amazon listing, the lid and bowl have a porcelain enamel layer, and two vents regulate the air; fully closed, they smother the embers. On the Tamber, the instructions prohibit covering the grill during use, and it works only with open, direct heat. We would not put a larger piece of meat on it that is meant to cook under a lid.
At approx. €40, the Charmline folding grill is €5 above the Tamber. It folds flat, whereas the Tamber stays a fixed cylinder. If you want to take the grill with you in a rucksack or in the boot, you are better off with the Charmline.
Who is it suitable for?
The Tamber suits two people who grill small amounts over direct heat on a balcony, terrace or garden table and accept Feuerhand charcoal as the fuel. The instructions explicitly list garden, terrace and balcony as places of use. Whether you may use charcoal on your balcony, however, is decided by your tenancy agreement and house rules; the guide Grilling on a balcony summarises the legal situation. Which type of grill suits your space is answered by the Grill Finder.
The Tamber is wrong for anyone who cannot risk any smoke on the balcony, for example because the house rules strictly regulate open fire. In our assessment, an electric grill would be more likely to come into question for them.
The safety distance that the instructions require comes without a figure. We would measure the parapet, wooden decking and awning ourselves and rather leave more distance than less.
