Which Monroe this is: item 8381 in matt graphite
Enders builds the Monroe Pro 3 SIK Turbo in two versions. This page is about the SHADOW with item number 8381, colour matt graphite according to the manufacturer. The stainless steel version with number 8376 has its own review on our site, the Enders Monroe Pro 3 SIK Turbo. Under ASIN B0BRYFFD7G, Amazon explicitly names the 8381 in the title, and the dimensions in the Amazon data sheet match the manufacturer’s assembled dimensions.
The grill cart is built for bottled liquid gas, propane (G31) or butane (G30), in Germany and Austria according to appliance category I3B/P(50) at 50 mbar. In our gas grill category we place it among the three-burner models with extra equipment: besides the three main burners it has a back burner and a side burner.
What SHADOW changes in the material is stated on the manufacturer’s page. The cooking lid and burner chamber are made of enamelled steel with cast aluminium side parts; the control panel, the two double-walled doors and the two side shelves are made of powder-coated steel. The lid holds a heat-resistant panoramic viewing window and a thermometer. The Amazon data sheet lists stainless steel as the frame material; that contradicts Enders, and we go with the manufacturer.
There is one point you should know before you buy. The product page of the 8381 is still online at Enders, but the gas grill catalogue now lists only the SIKR models, including the Monroe Pro 3 SIKR Turbo Shadow with number 8364. What the successor does differently is covered in the FAQ.
Burners, grilling area and dimensions
The three main burners are made of stainless steel, two with 3.5 kW each and one with 4.2 kW. The stronger one is the TURBO ZONE and is the only one with a red control knob. In addition there is an infrared back burner with 3.5 kW and a side burner with 2.9 kW, which you use as a shelf when it is folded down. According to the parts list, the control panel has two black knobs, the red one and two small black ones; pictograms show which knob controls which zone.
Together this gives 17.6 kW. That is what the manufacturer’s page says, and it is the rated heat input in the technical data of the manual. The “heating power 4.2 kilowatts” at Amazon is only the largest single burner.
The grilling area measures 62 x 43 cm, so 2,666 cm². Above it hangs a swinging warming rack made of stainless steel. The main grate is called SWITCH GRID: enamelled cast iron with a round element that can be taken out. According to the parts list, the box contains two SWITCH GRID system grates, the round element, a further grill grate, the warming rack and a pot grate. Above the burners lie flame covers made of stainless steel, on the right the TURBO ZONE’s own cover. Ignition is by piezo in the control knob, without a battery.
Below, a removable grease drawer with a collecting container catches the grease. You take the burner chamber apart without tools into individual stainless steel parts; Enders calls this SIMPLE CLEAN.
Assembled, the grill measures W 143.5 x D 58 x H 118.5 cm at a working height of 90 cm. According to Enders it weighs 52 kg, the Amazon data sheet converts to approx. 53.0 kg, and it stands on four wheels with a lock. Six utensil hooks hang on the sides. For storage, you lift the side shelves slightly and fold them down; how narrow the grill then becomes is not stated in any of our sources.
In detail: TURBO ZONE, HEAT RANGE and back burner
The TURBO ZONE is not a separate infrared burner. It is the right-hand stainless steel burner, over which a flame cover with infrared mesh sits instead of the normal one. Enders states 800 °C for it and describes the zone as radiating visibly red. Its nozzle, at 0.86 mm, is slightly larger than that of the two other main burners (0.79 mm), which fits its 4.2 kW.
Why a glowing grid browns faster is physics and not a manufacturer claim. A gas burner under an ordinary plate mainly heats air, which then flows past the food. A fine metal mesh that the flame brings to a glow gives off a larger share of the energy as thermal radiation, and that hits the surface of the meat directly. For the crust, the temperature at the surface counts; the core catches up more slowly. Where exactly the 800 °C are measured, at the mesh or at grate height, is not stated in the documents.
According to the manual, the TURBO ZONE does not use more gas than an ordinary grilling zone. With 4.2 instead of 3.5 kW and the larger nozzle, however, it calculably sits higher at full setting; what Enders’ comparison refers to is not explained in the manual. It responds as soon as you turn the red knob on, and can be regulated freely.
HEAT RANGE is Enders’ name for the burner system. The manual gives 80 to 300 °C in the cooking chamber and up to 400 °C directly at the grate; it explicitly names the lower end for low-temperature cooking. The new flame covers are meant to keep flare-ups small, meaning sudden flames from dripping fat. With three separately adjustable burners you grill directly over the flame or indirectly beside it: one burner stays off, the food lies above it, the lid is closed. How to divide the zones sensibly is explained in our guide on direct and indirect heat. With the lid closed, according to the manual you can also use the grill like an oven.
Enders wants the SWITCH GRID preheated for approx. 15 to 20 minutes with the lid closed.
For the back burner there is a rule that restricts you. According to the manual, the infrared burner must not be used at the same time as the other burners. If you work with radiant heat at the back, you therefore have no flame at the front.
How long does an 11 kg bottle last?
At full load, calculably around 8.6 hours. Enders gives a consumption of 1,280 g/h for the full rated heat input, and 11,000 g of gas divided by 1,280 g/h gives this value. With the controls half open or only one active zone, the bottle lasts longer.
The 8.6 hours are a lower limit, for a reason stated in the manual itself. The consumption figure belongs to the sum of all five burners. But because the back burner may never run together with the main burners, this sum is never reached in operation. Three main burners and the side burner together come to 14.1 kW by our calculation, provided the side burner counts among the burners that may run alongside; the manual only speaks of the other burners in general. We found no gram values per burner in the documents, so we do not calculate a more precise running time.
According to the manual, 5 kg, 8 kg and 11 kg bottles up to a maximum of Ø 30 x 59 cm fit in the base cabinet. The 5 kg bottle is approx. 47.0 cm high with regulator at Ø 23.5 cm, the 8 kg bottle approx. 46.0 cm at Ø 30.0 cm, the 11 kg bottle approx. 59.0 cm at Ø 30.0 cm. With the same calculation you get around 3.9 hours of full load for 5 kg and around 6.3 hours for 8 kg. According to the manufacturer’s page, the 11 kg bottle may stay in the base cabinet during operation.
What a refill costs depends on the retailer and on whether you exchange or have your own bottle filled; we do not give any euro amounts here. What to look for when buying a bottle is covered in our guide gas bottle for the grill. Enders itself advises getting advice from a specialist retailer when buying or renting the bottle.
SWITCH GRID inserts and the tiered manufacturer warranty
Inserts that Enders sells separately go into the opening of the round element. The manufacturer’s page for the 8381 lists Sear Grate (item no. 7790) for €39.95, poultry roaster (7791) for €39.95, pizza stone (7792) for €44.95, pan (7793) for €49.95, wok for €59.90 and Dutch oven for €89.90. The page also lists a cast reversible plate 1/3 for €59.90, a Plancha cast plate L for €114.00 and a Pizzacover Turbo for €79.90.
For cast plates the manual has its own requirement. A cast reversible plate may be used as its own manual describes, and Enders requires original Enders products for it. Covering the grilling area completely with aluminium foil or similar is prohibited, because the grill would otherwise overheat.
Besides the statutory warranty rights, Enders has a voluntary warranty for first buyers, tiered by component. For the extended periods you register the grill on the Enders website within three months of purchase. According to the manual, the following then apply: 10 years against rust-through and burn-through on the cooking lid unit, 5 years against rust-through and burn-through on the grease drawer and SIMPLE CLEAN, 3 years against rust-through and burn-through on stainless steel burners, enamelled cast iron grates and the warming rack, likewise 3 years each on back burner, side burner and plastic parts, and 2 years on all other parts such as burner covers, ignition bridge, screws and thermometer.
Setup, gas and cleaning according to the wording of the manual
Here we stay close to the manual of the 8381 (file version 241010), because it concerns gas and an open flame.
On setup, page 25 says: use the gas grill only outdoors and make sure it stands sheltered from wind; place it on a level, stable and fireproof surface; do not move it during operation and lock the wheels with the lock; keep at least 1 m clearance from combustible and heat-sensitive materials; no objects or parts of buildings below 2 m height above the grill; keep the ventilation openings of the gas bottle compartment free.
The rules for operation are on the same page. The appliance is not intended for children and persons with a limited ability to operate appliances. The surfaces get very hot, you warn bystanders, keep children away, and wear protective gloves for hot parts. The side shelves are not meant for direct contact with food, and enamelled cast iron grates must not come into contact with strongly acidic foods. You never leave the grill unattended, do not smoke when handling the gas system, do not place the bottle near open fire, and keep the grill away from moisture and splashing water. You protect the bottle from strong sun; it must not get warmer than 40 °C. The bottle valve is open only while the grill is running; in case of gas leakage or a fault you close it immediately, and likewise after use and before every change of location when you switch the grill off. You check the hose and pressure regulator for cracks and damage before every use.
Fats and oils can ignite spontaneously when heated strongly, and accumulated grease catches fire if cleaning is inadequate. The manual therefore requires you to dab off excess fat and marinade before grilling and to clean the appliance regularly of grease deposits. Never extinguish burning, hot or smoking fat or oil with water.
For the gas connection, the grill may only be operated with a pressure regulator. The one supplied is set at the factory for liquid gas and has an integrated hose rupture protection (EFV); a further one must not be used. You tighten the regulator on the bottle by hand, without tools, so that the seal stays intact. The union nuts have a left-hand thread. On the grill you tighten the nut with a SW 17 spanner and hold against it with a second one. After every bottle fitting you check all connection points with leak detection spray or soapy water (1 part soap, 3 parts water); if bubbles appear with the valve open, the spot is leaking. A leak test with an open flame is strictly prohibited. When connecting, there must be no ignition sources nearby, and the hose must be neither kinked nor chafing and must remain accessible along its entire length.
For the hose, Enders recommends 0.8 m. After 5 years it must be serviced, you replace regulator and hose after 10 years at the latest, and a new hose may be at most 1.5 m long. Repairs to gas-carrying parts are reserved for authorised specialist personnel. You never free up stiff valves and knobs with oil or penetrating oil, because gas and oil form an explosive mixture.
Cleaning is done after every use, especially the burner chamber, flame covers, grease drawer and grease collection tray, and according to page 31 also before every use. Beforehand you let the grill cool down sufficiently and wear safety gloves, because individual components can have sharp edges. You wipe the surfaces with a damp cloth or rinse them hot; with a mild detergent you also follow its manufacturer’s instructions. You do not use flammable, abrasive or chlorine-containing cleaning agents. Everything must dry completely before the next use. You do not quench the hot SWITCH GRID with cold water, but clean it with a brush and mild, warm soapy water and soak residues. The SIMPLE CLEAN parts made of stainless steel may go in the dishwasher. You remove the burners only once the gas supply is closed, and you must not swap them with one another. You clear a blocked burner tube with a needle or a pipe cleaner. You dispose of the grease from drawer and tray in an environmentally responsible way.
In case of fire, you first bring people to safety and close the bottle valve. Filled gas bottles are removed from the danger area or cooled with water from a protected position, because according to the manual a spontaneous, explosive re-ignition is possible. For inhaled gas and for burns, the manual has its own first aid section on page 30.
What Enders does not state
Several values that would help with comparing appear neither on the manufacturer’s page nor in the manual: the preheating time in minutes (Enders only speaks of a short preheating time), the time until the TURBO ZONE reaches its maximum temperature, the dimensions of the warming rack and of the individual grate segments, the wall thicknesses of lid and burner chamber, the wheel diameter, the country of origin, the market launch of the 8381 and whether it is still being produced, how long spare parts are available, a conversion to natural gas, a statement on balcony use, pack size and parcel weight, and an assembly time. An earlier version of this page gave minute values for preheating and assembly, 12.5 kW output and a grilling area of 55 x 42 cm. None of these figures was substantiated, and output and area contradict the manufacturer’s data.
What there is: a spare parts list of all components in the manual, in which thermometer, burner tube, ignition bridge and ignition cable, among others, are listed individually. Orders go through Enders’ spare parts shop, which requires registration.
What else is worth considering?
| Model | The difference | Price | Our rating | Choose this if |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Enders Monroe Pro 3 SIK Turbo Shadow (this one) | TURBO ZONE in the main grate, matt graphite, enamelled lid | approx. €599 | 8.8 | you want the technology of the 8376 in a dark finish |
| Enders Monroe Pro 3 SIK Turbo | same burners, double-walled lid, doors and shelves in stainless steel | approx. €529 | 8.9 | you want stainless steel on the lid, doors and shelves |
| Napoleon Freestyle PRO 365 | Infrared side burner (Sizzle Zone) instead of a Turbo Zone in the main grate | approx. €599 | 9.1 | you want to sear while the whole main grate stays free |
| Broil King Regal 590 | five main burners with 16 kW, back burner 4.4 kW, motorised rotisserie | approx. €1,649 | 9.4 | you regularly grill for large groups and want to spend more than €1,000 |
The prices are guide values from our price boxes and change in the shops. The rating is our editorial assessment based on manufacturer data; we did not measure anything on any of the four grills.
When the SHADOW fits and when another grill does
Start with the spot where it will stand. With the shelves folded out, the grill is almost one and a half metres wide, and the minimum clearance from combustible materials comes on top at the sides. If an awning, a canopy or a neighbour’s balcony hangs lower than the height stated above over your spot, the spot is ruled out according to the manual, and you look for another spot first before thinking about the model.
Then the question of how you sear. On the SHADOW the hot zone lies in the main grate, on the right. If you sear there, the rest of the area is available for the other food, and that is exactly the idea: crust on the right, finish cooking indirectly on the left with the burner switched off. If you would rather occupy the whole main grate and sear on a separate side burner, the Napoleon Freestyle PRO 365 with its Sizzle Zone is the more suitable design in our comparison.
The side burner is real added value if you make side dishes or sauces in a pot. If you never do, you pay for it anyway and use it as a shelf.
On budget, you should count on more than the grill: approx. €599 at Amazon (Amazon page on 20 October 2026: €599.00), while the stainless steel sister model 8376 stands at approx. €529. On top come the gas bottle and, on the manufacturer’s page, the premium weather protection cover for €69.90. Enders lists it on the page of the 8381 but names other models in the cover’s name (Uniq Pro 3, Uniq 3, Kansas II Pro 3 and 4, Monroe Pro 3 K and 4 K, Colorado 4); ask the retailer before ordering whether it fits. Inserts for the SWITCH GRID come on top if needed.
That leaves the choice between SHADOW and stainless steel. The technology is the same, and which surface you prefer is for you to decide. We would take the stainless steel version if the grill stands outside all year under a cover and scratches on doors and shelves are likely, and the SHADOW if the dark finish matters more to you.
The Monroe is the wrong choice for you if you grill commercially, for example for a club or a communal installation, because the manufacturer’s warranty then does not apply. The same goes if the grill has to get over steps between cellar and garden: wheels help on level ground, and in our view nobody carries a cart of this weight up a staircase alone.
