What the 8847 is, and what Weber writes about it
Weber lists the grate as item 8847 in its accessories, in the WEBER CRAFTED system section, and simply calls it “Grillroste” (grill grates). Under the title it only says it is compatible with selected Spirit grills. The description makes it the base for the inserts of the Gourmet BBQ System (GBS). The material given there is porcelain-enamelled cast iron.
According to Weber, the grate is 1.3 cm high, 44.5 cm wide and 60.5 cm deep; packed, it measures 5.8 × 40 × 54.5 cm. We do not derive a cooking area from this, because these are outer dimensions. Amazon’s size field gives clearly smaller values; we follow Weber.
The Amazon photo shows a rectangular field of bars with cross bars. A seam divides it into two halves, judging by the picture, and in the middle sits a ring with its own bars, probably the round grill grate insert that Weber mentions for the Sear Grate.
This text is based on Weber’s product pages and manuals (as of 6 October 2026) as well as the Amazon catalogue. We have not held the grate in our hands and have not grilled anything on it.
Does the 8847 fit your grill?
Only if your model is on Weber’s list for the 8847. It is organised by burner count and year of manufacture: Spirit with 4 burners from 2025, Spirit and Spirit II with 3 burners from 2016 to 2024, Spirit with 2 burners and side-mounted control knobs before 2016.
In addition there are the Genesis Silver B/C and Gold B/C, the Genesis Platinum B/C (model year 2005, as Weber puts it only for this model) and the Genesis gas grills 1000 to 3500. The Amazon title sorts more coarsely: 400 series from 2025, 300 series before 2025, without burner count. That roughly matches Weber’s list.
The catch is the current 3-burner Spirit. Built from 2025, it is not on the 8847 list but under item 8846, a grill grate with a cast iron grill grate insert for Spirit II 200 and Spirit 200 (1.3 × 44.5 × 52 cm, €144.99 in the Weber shop). According to Weber, it fits Spirit with 2 and 3 burners from 2025 as well as Spirit and Spirit II with 2 burners from 2016 to 2024.
The current Spirit E-310 (3 burners, Weber item 1500862) has grates made of porcelain-enamelled cast iron and is promoted by Weber with the WEBER CRAFTED base frame set, not with a GBS grate. On the Weber pages we read, there is no explicit sentence on the E-310 and the 8847. We read the lists as meaning it belongs with the 8846; if you want to be sure, ask Weber with your model number and year of manufacture.
“Spirit 300” in our title is only a rough guide.
Enamelled cast iron, heat storage and the stainless steel alternative
For the grates of its gas grills, Weber names two materials: enamelled cast iron and stainless steel. Weber’s care guide names porcelain-enamelled cast iron as the material most commonly used for grill grates, because it retains heat particularly well; how often Weber uses it in its own gas grills, Weber does not say.
Weber’s guide to choosing materials describes cast iron grates in general; the 8847 is not meant there. They store heat well and release it for longer, so food can burn more quickly. Cast iron reacts sensitively to temperature fluctuations, indirect grilling works less well because of the strong heat storage, and the weight of the material is a drawback. According to Weber, the enamel protects better against rust and makes cleaning easier. An overview of the material with all three grate types is in our guide grill grate guide.
Our own inference from this, which Weber does not draw in this way: a sluggish grate loses less temperature when you put cold food on it, but takes longer if you switch to a lower setting after searing. If you mostly cook indirectly, you gain little from the heat storage.
On weight, Amazon has a figure: 14.11 pounds, around 6.4 kg. Amazon’s package dimensions match Weber’s packaging size, so the weight is probably the shipping weight.
The stainless steel version in the GBS system is the 7586 (1.5 × 44 × 60.5 cm), €179.99 in the Weber shop and therefore €25 more than the 8847 there. According to Weber, the grate contains a 30.5 cm (12 inch) grill grate insert for traditional grilling. In terms of fit, it matches the 8847 as far as Spirit with 3 and 4 burners is concerned; Weber also names Genesis and SmokeFire.
Inserts and accessories: what Weber offers and what it costs
Weber lists inserts as separate items. The GBS category in the German Weber shop showed eight entries on 6 October 2026, including no wok insert and no roasting basket; the prices are Weber’s own:
- Sear Grate (8834): €64.99
- Sear Grate and Plancha (8858, two pieces): €84.99 instead of €99.99
- Plancha (7421): €64.99
- Poultry holder (8838): €79.99
- 2-in-1 Dutch oven (8857): €159.99
- Glazed pizza stone (8861): €69.99
- Drip tray holder (8845): €42.49 instead of €49.99
- Grate lifter (8844): €29.99
Weber describes the swap for the Sear Grate in one sentence: take out the round grill grate insert, put in the Sear Grate, and it stays securely in place. Like the grate, the Sear Grate is made of porcelain-enamelled cast iron and, according to Weber, is washed by hand; the cast iron Plancha is also washed by hand according to Weber’s recommendation.
The pizza stone is glazed cordierite and, according to Weber, designed for temperatures up to 315 °C. It is cared for with a brush and a damp cloth, without soap. Of the Dutch oven, according to Weber only the base fits into the GBS grates, and it is not suitable for the dishwasher. How to make pizza on a gas grill is explained in our guide Pizza on the grill.
What the grate costs, and which other grates Weber offers
Our guide price for the 8847 is approx. €118 (as of 5 October 2026); the Amazon catalogue showed €117.99 that day. In the Weber shop it costs €154.99 including VAT (retrieved on 6 October 2026), around €37 more. That the Amazon listing with the ASIN B0177V9OHE refers to the same grate, we conclude from the model number 8847 in the catalogue title; Weber does not link to Amazon.
Besides the GBS grates, Weber has its own grate line, WEBER CRAFTED, whose cooking accessories require the base frame set. The price of the 8847 can only be compared roughly with their two-piece sets as long as its piece count is unknown. For Spirit with 3 and 4 burners, the same fit applies to two grates of this line as to the 8847: the 7856 made of porcelain-enamelled cast iron (1 × 58.5 × 44.5 cm, €154.99 in the Weber shop, reduced to €131.74 on 6 October 2026) and the 7860 made of stainless steel (€149.00).
The single grate 7011 made of porcelain-enamelled cast iron does not mention the Gourmet BBQ System on its page. It measures 1.3 × 30 × 44.5 cm, costs €79.99 in the Weber shop and fits the SmokeFire EX4 and EX6 pellet grills and gas grills of the Spirit 300 series. On 6 October 2026 it showed “Informiere mich” (notify me) instead of “In den Warenkorb” (add to basket).
Cleaning, warranty and safety according to Weber
The details below come from the 2025 Spirit manual (edition 8654337_011325 DE) and from the manual for the Spirit II E-210 and E-310 GBS; the warranty period of up to 15 years is stated on Weber’s warranty page. They apply to the grill and its built-in grates.
Cleaning
The product page sums up care in one sentence: preheat for 15 minutes at the highest heat and brush off with a grill brush. For preheating, the Spirit manual says all burners on Start/High, 10 to 15 minutes, until the grill thermometer shows 260 °C. The purpose is that food does not stick, the grate gets hot enough and residues burn off. For cleaning the grates there are two steps: brush residues off the built-in grate with a stainless steel grill brush, then take out the grates and set them aside. The documents differ on timing: the Spirit II manual has you brush directly after preheating, while the cleaning and maintenance chapter in the Spirit manual requires at the start that the grill is switched off and cooled down.
According to the manual, Flavorizer Bars and grill grates must not be cleaned in the sink, in the dishwasher or in a self-cleaning oven. Weber’s Swiss care tips warn for cast iron: clean by hand only, never in the dishwasher. As unsuitable for cleaning the grill, the manual lists: abrasive stainless steel polishes or lacquers, acidic cleaning agents, white spirit or xylene, oven cleaners, abrasive cleaning agents (kitchen cleaners) or abrasive cleaning pads.
You check the grill brush regularly for loose bristles and excessive wear and replace it if you find loose bristles on the grate or in the brush. At the start of every season, Weber recommends a new one with stainless steel bristles. The grill itself should be cleaned thoroughly at least twice a year, if used continuously possibly every quarter; signs are low temperatures, uneven heat distribution and food sticking.
Warranty
Weber’s voluntary warranty runs up to 15 years depending on the product or product part, applies in the EMEA region and only to the original purchaser. The Spirit manual also limits it to individual private households: use is not covered if it is commercial, at municipal level or in multi-party buildings, for example in restaurants, hotels, resorts or rental properties.
The Spirit’s periods according to the 2025 manual: cooking chamber and lid component 10 years against rusting through or burning through (paint adhesion 2 years, paint fading and discolouration excluded), stainless steel burner tubes 10 years against rusting through or burning through, stainless steel grill grates, stainless steel Flavorizer Bars and porcelain-enamelled cast iron grill grates 5 years each against rusting through or burning through, all other parts 2 years. For the Spirit II, Weber names 10 years for all components, excluding normal wear and tear. In addition, the two-year statutory warranty applies in the EU.
Safety at the grill
The grate sits in a gas grill, so the rules of the grill manual apply. Weber stipulates using the grill only outdoors in a well-ventilated area, not in garages, buildings, covered walkways, tents, other enclosed areas or under combustible structures. Combustible materials must be at least 61 cm from the back and side panels during operation; the Spirit II manual names a radius of 65 cm around all outer edges. There must be no flammable gases and liquids (e.g. petrol, alcohol etc.) and no other combustible materials in the grilling area.
The grill cover or combustible items do not belong on the grill or in the storage space beneath it while it is in operation or still hot. It is never left unattended during preheating and grilling, accessible parts can get very hot, and children stay away. Weber requires heat-resistant grill gloves with a contact heat resistance of level 2 or higher according to DIN EN 407 (a standard that applies in Germany and the EU). In case of a grease fire, you switch off all burners immediately and keep the lid closed until the fire has gone out. You do not line the grease tray and cooking chamber with aluminium foil, and before every use you check the grease tray and drip pan for grease residues and remove excessive build-up.
The manual has its own requirements for gas cylinder, regulator and hose, including the numbered leak check after every connection of a gas cylinder. They hardly touch on swapping the grate. We do not reproduce them in excerpts, because a shortened gas instruction can create false security; read them in your grill’s manual, step by step and in full. One rule belongs here anyway: if you smell gas, you shut off the gas supply, extinguish all open flames and open the lid; if the smell persists, you move away from the grill and call the gas supplier or the fire brigade.
What Weber does not state about the 8847
These points can be verified neither on Weber’s product page for the 8847 nor in the manuals we read:
- Net weight
- Warranty period for later-purchased accessories such as the 8847: neither product page nor warranty page
- Piece count and construction (single grate or multi-part)
- Scope of delivery beyond suitability for GBS inserts, that is, whether a centre piece or a standard insert is included, and its diameter
- Bar thickness, bar spacing and cooking area in square centimetres; Weber gives the bar diameter of 7 mm only for the stainless steel grate 7860
- Maximum temperature of the grate
- Dishwasher suitability on the product page
- Its own care instructions for enamelled grates (the list of unsuitable cleaning agents in the manual applies to the whole grill)
- Statements on balcony and terrace (the Spirit manual only says “outdoors only” together with an exclusion list and minimum distance)
- Operating instructions or data sheet for the 8847
- Country of manufacture and market launch (the Amazon listing date of 1 October 2025 says nothing about the year of manufacture)
What else comes into question?
| Model | The difference | Price | Our score | Choose this if |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Weber GBS grill grate 8847 (this one) | porcelain-enamelled cast iron, base for GBS inserts, fit list from Weber | approx. €118 | 8.7 | your grill is on Weber’s list and you want to use at least one insert |
| Lodge L8GP3 cast iron grill pan Ø 26 cm | standalone pan with grill ridges, 2.78 kg according to Lodge, no grate conversion | approx. €49 | 8.7 | you want cast iron heat for steaks or vegetables and do not want to swap your grate |
| MGiessca Universal Plancha griddle | griddle, 46 × 32 cm according to the Amazon title, not a grate replacement | approx. €60 | 7.9 | you want to cook small-cut food on a smooth surface and keep your grate |
| Petromax Feuertopf ft6 with feet | Dutch oven with three feet, pot up to 5.5 l, 9 kg with lid according to Petromax | approx. €75 | 9.0 | you want to cook stews and braised dishes without converting a grate |
The prices are guide values from our individual reviews and were not compared on the same day for all rows; the score is our editorial assessment, we measured nothing. The stainless steel grate 7586 and the WEBER CRAFTED grates are missing because we do not cover them as separate reviews. More grates, pans and griddles are in the category Grill accessories, and the alternatives at a glance in our best-of list Grill accessories compared.
Who the 8847 suits, and when something else is better
First ask what is going on the grate. For prawns or pieces of vegetables you do not need a grate swap: the MGiessca Plancha (approx. €60) is offered for Weber gas grills according to the Amazon title and replaces no grate; whether it fits yours, you check by measuring at the grill.
If you only want cast iron heat for steaks or vegetables, the Lodge L8GP3 (approx. €49) gives you a standalone pan with grill ridges, and you pay €69 less than for the 8847 alone.
Then the costs: the 8847 only becomes a system with an insert. With the Sear Grate you are at around €183, with Sear Grate and pizza stone at around €253, calculated with our guide price for the grate and Weber’s prices for the inserts, without a base frame set that may be needed (see the FAQ on the pizza stone).
For braised dishes you do not need a conversion either. The Petromax ft6 (approx. €75) is a standalone pot; the Weber Dutch oven from the insert list costs €159.99 in the Weber shop, around €85 more than the Petromax. According to Weber it holds 6.8 litres, the Petromax according to Petromax up to 5.5 litres; here we only compare the price.
If you do not have a gas grill yet, the Grill Finder is a starting point; the grate depends on the grill. If you own a current 3-burner Spirit, you would ask Weber about the 8846 first, with your model number and year of manufacture. And if you only need a replacement grate and do not want to buy an insert, you buy a capability with the 8847 that goes unused; the single grate 7011, however, could not be ordered on 6 October 2026, so ask Weber for a suitable grate for your year of manufacture.
