A charcoal grill that travels as a suitcase
Folded up, the TAINO MOX looks like a flat black suitcase. Opened, it is an open grill box on two legs, with a charcoal box inside and a chrome-plated grate on top. It has no lid. We list it under charcoal grills, and our price box shows it at Amazon for approx. €30 (Amazon page on 20 October 2026: €29.90).
Behind the brand is Clic-Trade GmbH from Cologne. By its own account, TAINO has been online since 2015 and sells products that it describes as its own manufacture only over the internet. In its own shop, the MOX in black cost €39.99 on 21 October 2026 as an offer, regular price €42.99. That is about a third above the value in our price box. So check the current amount before you buy.
That both sides mean the same device can be pinned down by a number. TAINO lists the black MOX under item number 93564, and exactly this number appears in the Amazon catalogue as the part number for the MOX model. The Amazon title calls it a suitcase grill in retro style, while TAINO itself simply describes the colour as black (matt).
Dimensions, weight and the three parts
TAINO gives three dimensions, each as width x height x depth. Closed, the suitcase measures approx. 45.5 x 31.5 x 9.5 cm. As an open grill, the manufacturer states approx. 45.5 x 29.5 x 30 cm, and as overall size approx. 45.5 x 31.5 x 30 cm. Where the two centimetres of difference in height come from remains unclear; in the product photo there is a handle at the top edge that could be included in one of the two figures.
The Amazon catalogue gives a fourth dimension, converted approx. 45.5 x 24 x 31.5 cm. This combination matches none of the TAINO figures; the 24 cm corresponds more to the width of the grate. We stick with the manufacturer.
TAINO states the grilling area as approx. 24 x 40 cm, which is around 960 square centimetres. So the grate lies lengthwise in the 45.5 cm wide suitcase. According to the manufacturer, the charcoal tray sits approx. 17 cm above the ground. Weight: approx. 3.5 kg, and the Amazon catalogue arrives at the same value with 7.716 pounds converted.
As material, the product page names powder-coated steel and describes the grate as chrome-plated; TAINO does not say what the charcoal box is made of. In the instructions, the same box is called “painted” in one place. The parts list there has exactly three items: A, the grill box with legs, B, the grill grate, and C, the charcoal box. According to the scope of delivery, the carton contains the suitcase grill without charcoal and one set of instructions. So you buy charcoal and firelighters separately.
The product image shows how it fits together. The suitcase stands open on wire brackets, the silver charcoal box gleams on the inside, and the grate lies across the opening. The embossed TAINO lettering is on the outside. When closed, a buckle closure holds it shut.
The instructions (version 11/2024) describe assembly in five steps. While it is closed, you first pull the legs out completely. Then you open the grill box and take out the grate and the charcoal box. The charcoal box is opened and placed in the grill box, and the grate goes safely on top. The fifth point actually already belongs to care: clean the grate after each use. The word “pull out” is interesting. On the product page the legs are called “fold-out”, while the instructions describe an outward movement. No tool appears in any step.
In detail: controlling heat without a lid and without vents
An open grill like the MOX cooks almost only from below. The embers give off radiant heat, and hot gases also rise and pass by the food. The top of a steak cools in the air as long as it is not turned. With a lid, this heat would stay under a hood and reach the meat from all sides. That is the difference between direct grilling and indirect cooking, and the MOX can only do the first.
Air vents with which you could damp down or fan the embers do not appear in the parts list. A note here so you are not puzzled when reading the instructions: they contain general passages that speak of a warming rack, of valves for the air supply, a drip tray and burner openings. None of these parts is in the MOX parts list. We read this as boilerplate from the instructions of other TAINO grills.
What is left as a control? The amount of charcoal and where you put it. Over a length of 40 cm you can set up two zones: the embers packed tightly on one half, the other half thin or empty. That gives you two fields of approx. 20 x 24 cm each, a hot one for browning and a milder one for finished pieces to move to. Our assessment: for sausages, skewers, vegetables and thin steaks that is enough. For thick pieces that need to cook for a long time, a grill with a lid is the better choice.
How far the embers are from the grate has not been published by TAINO, and no source mentions a grate height adjustment. The closer the embers are to the food, the stronger the radiation hits it, which is why this distance is otherwise the second adjustment lever on open grills. On the MOX it does not exist. If you want to keep the heat up for longer, the instructions say to add small amounts of charcoal on top. Whether lump charcoal or briquettes suit this better is explained in our guide Lump charcoal or briquettes.
Can the MOX go on the balcony?
TAINO expressly names the balcony as a place of use, alongside terrace, garden, park and campsite. But whether you may grill with charcoal there is decided by your tenancy agreement, house rules and local regulations. And the instructions demand clearances that are hard to keep on many balconies.
On location, the instructions set out the following rules. You should check local regulations before grilling. The grill is intended exclusively for grilling and cooking food outdoors and is to be used only in well ventilated places. In enclosed spaces it is dangerous and prohibited, and on a boat or in a motorhome or caravan it is unsuitable. Protect it from weather and moisture. Do not store anything flammable nearby and keep at least 95 cm clearance from combustible materials. Do not use it under combustible surfaces or roofs; the area above must stay clear. Place it on a stable and heat-resistant surface so that it does not wobble or tip over, and in a place that children and animals cannot reach.
On a typical balcony, that specifically means 95 cm to the awning, to the wooden or bamboo privacy screen and to the cushions of the balcony furniture. A floor of wooden decking or plastic is not heat-resistant, and the charcoal tray sits only approx. 17 cm above it. We would only put the MOX there on a non-combustible base, such as a stone slab, and even then only if the house rules allow charcoal. What landlords and courts say about this is gathered in our guide Grilling on a balcony.
Lighting, handling, cleaning: the wording of the instructions
The instructions are precise on lighting. Three to four firelighters go in the middle of the charcoal grate and are lit with a long match; on the MOX, in our understanding, this means the charcoal box. Place charcoal around each firelighter, ideally in the shape of a pyramid. The embers are ready for grilling when grey ash is visible by day or red glow by night. Then you spread the charcoal evenly. To prevent sticking, you brush a thin layer of cooking oil on the cooking surfaces. And in capital letters: under no circumstances petrol or methylated spirits, only firelighters to EN 1860-3. This European standard, which applies in the EU, covers firelighters for solid fuels in grilling appliances; which products meet it is stated on their packaging.
During operation, according to the instructions, the housing, all attachments and the charcoal become very hot, and it speaks of an extreme risk of burns. So never touch the grill with bare hands. You lift the grate off by its handle and with oven gloves or heat-resistant gloves. TAINO generally recommends grill or kitchen gloves because there are partly sharp edges on the grill and accessories.
For cleaning, the instructions prescribe: let the grill cool down completely beforehand. Clean the grill grate after each use. The grill is not suitable for the dishwasher. Abrasive or chlorine-containing cleaning agents are taboo. You clean the painted grill box only with a mild cleaner and warm water and dry it with a soft cloth. Before each use, the grill should be completely dry.
Whether a wire brush counts as abrasive on the chrome-plated grate is left open by the text. We would rather reach for a sponge with a soft side, because a chrome layer is thin and scratches in it expose the metal underneath. How grease on the embers becomes a problem is covered in the guide Preventing grease fires.
What the manufacturer does not state
For the MOX, the following is missing from all the sources we evaluated (product page, instructions, warranty sheet, Amazon catalogue): the material thickness of the steel, the material of the charcoal box, how much charcoal fits in, the distance between embers and grate, a maximum temperature, a heat-up time in minutes, a number of people, the country of manufacture, a manufacturer’s guarantee with a stated term, prices for spare parts, a note on ash disposal and the year of market launch. It also remains unclear how many handles the suitcase has: Amazon writes “with handles”, while the drawings in the instructions and the product photo show one. For weight, the product page says approx. 3.5 kg, and the shop data for the variant says 3600 g; whether either value includes the packaging cannot be seen.
What else is worth considering?
| Model | The difference | Price | Our rating | Choose this one if |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TAINO MOX Suitcase Grill Black (this one) | Suitcase, grilling area approx. 24 x 40 cm, approx. 3.5 kg | approx. €30 | 7.4 | you want a flat grill for the car and grill on the ground or on a table |
| Feuerhand Tamber | round tabletop grill, enamelled grate Ø 19.3 cm, approx. 2.1 kg | approx. €35 | 8.2 | the two of you grill at a garden table |
| HUOLE foldable charcoal grill | stainless steel trough on folding legs, 70 cm high when set up | approx. €28.50 | 7.5 | you want to grill standing up and have space in the boot for 73 cm of length |
| Knister portable charcoal grill | pull-out body made of 1.5 mm steel, two grate heights | approx. €50 | 8.2 | you want a documented material thickness and a second grate level |
The prices come from our price boxes and change constantly. The rating is our editorial assessment from the data comparison; we did not measure anything on any of the four grills.
When the MOX, when another
The first question is the number of people. According to Feuerhand, the grate of the Feuerhand Tamber has a diameter of 19.3 cm, which is just under 300 square centimetres. The MOX has a good three times that area. Feuerhand expressly builds the Tamber for two people, and at 2.1 kg it is lighter. It costs approx. €35, the MOX approx. €30. If only two of you sit at the table, we would take the Tamber; from three people with sausages and vegetables it is no longer enough in our assessment, while the MOX is more likely to be.
Then the working height. At approx. 31.5 cm overall height, the MOX is a grill for the ground or for a heat-proof table. The HUOLE foldable charcoal grill stands 70 cm high when set up, so you grill standing up. It costs approx. €28.50, the MOX approx. €30. The price for that is the packed size: folded, its seller states 73 x 33 x 16 cm, while the MOX comes to 45.5 x 31.5 x 9.5 cm. In a small boot or on a luggage rack, that is a real difference.
Third, how much you want to know about the material. For the MOX, it says only “powder-coated steel”. For the body of its portable charcoal grill, Knister states 1.5 mm steel, for the grates 2.5 mm stainless steel, and according to the instructions the small grate can be pushed in 4 cm lower. That is the grate height adjustment the MOX lacks. In return, the Knister costs approx. €50 instead of approx. €30 and, according to the manufacturer, weighs 4.5 kg instead of approx. 3.5 kg.
We would not buy the MOX if you mainly want to grill in an awning, under a motorhome canopy or on board. The instructions expressly exclude tents, caravans, motorhomes and boats, and under a canopy the rule that the area above the grill must stay clear applies. It is equally wrong for anyone who regularly wants to cook roasts or whole chickens: that needs a lid. If you are still undecided between grill types, the Grill Finder gives you a preselection by space and budget, and what else matters when grilling on the move is covered in our camping grill buying guide.
For a couple or a small group who drive to the park or the campsite and grill there on a stone table or a stone slab, the MOX is, in our assessment, the right grill in this comparison, as long as the price is close to €30.
