Overview: a portable charcoal grill without a lid
The Everdure CUBE is a portable charcoal grill. The German manufacturer page lists it as CUBE Tragbarer Holzkohlegrill (portable charcoal grill), and the manual as Everdure by Heston Blumenthal CUBE Tragbarer Kohlegrill. On everdure.de, Everdure describes itself as an Australian brand that has stood for barbecue design since 1935.
The product photo of the Khaki variant shows the CUBE closed: the bamboo tray on top, a cream-white part beneath it, then the khaki-green housing with vertical slots, a metal clasp at the front, and metal handles sticking out to the left and right. Amazon lists this variant under model number HBCUBEKEU and writes the colour as “Kaki”. On everdure.de, four colours share one product page: Graphite (HBCUBEGEU), Orange (HBCUBEOEU), Stone (HBCUBESEU) and Khaki. According to the manufacturer, price, manual and technical data are the same for all of them.
We list the CUBE in the charcoal grills category as a portable grill for table and ground. Our overall score is 8.6.
On price: everdure.de states €150.00 per colour and refers you to nearby retailers for purchase. On Amazon the CUBE was unavailable on 6 October 2026, and our price box most recently showed approx. €239. The price on the day you buy is what counts.
Construction, dimensions and material
On page 7, the manual gives the grill as 347 mm long, 425 mm wide and 181 mm high; with the bamboo tray and storage tray in place, the height is 230 mm. everdure.com shows the same figures. In the strict sense, the CUBE is therefore not a cube. The weight is 7 kg net and 8 kg gross (everdure.com); Amazon’s catalogue calculates 15.43 pounds, which is 7.0 kg.
The grill bowl is porcelain-enamelled and, according to everdure.com, one-piece. The charcoal tray (called the charcoal container in the manual) is removable. The grate is chrome-plated, can be removed completely to add charcoal and rests on the grate supports; according to the manufacturer, discolouration from heat is normal and not a defect. For the handles, the German page speaks of chrome and heat insulation, while everdure.com says stainless steel. In addition, according to the parts list, there is insulation and a lower heat shield, and everdure.com mentions a heat shield with double insulation.
The Amazon catalogue calls the bowl triple porcelain-enamelled and the housing a lightweight steel housing.
According to everdure.com, the box contains the housing, the charcoal tray, the charcoal rack, the chrome grate, the food-safe storage tray and the bamboo tray. A cover, a carry bag and the cooking hood are not included.
Assembly takes three steps without tools (page 12): put the charcoal container into the housing and place the charcoal rack in it with the feet facing down, lay the grate on the four supports, then place the storage tray and bamboo tray on top and clamp them in with the side handles.
In detail: charcoal, heat-up time and grate height
The manual sets a hard limit: the maximum fuel load must not exceed 0.5 kg. It also recommends that the charcoal height never rise above the top edge of the charcoal container, and warns that too much charcoal can damage the appliance or the food (note 18). The quick-start guide for the CUBE and CUBE 360 gives the same quantity. Once the first load is lit, note 18 allows more charcoal to be mixed in; depending on the amount of food, the quick-start guide allows topping up, but requires the new charcoal to be covered in ash before food goes over it.
To light it, according to the manual you stack the charcoal on the charcoal rack around the firelighter and light it with an approved firelighter or a long wax stick. The quick-start guide describes the charcoal arrangement like this: charcoal in a pyramid on the charcoal carrier, lit in four places, starting with the corners furthest away, leaving the grill uncovered. After 10 to 15 minutes, most of the charcoal is partly or fully lit. However, you grill only once the grill has heated up and the charcoal has glowed red for at least 30 minutes (notes 18 and 25). If the half hour starts only once the charcoal is fully lit, that is 10 to 15 plus 30 minutes, so up to 45. Before the first sausage, therefore, allow at least half an hour, or 45 minutes on the longer reading.
The manual recommends placing the grate only once the charcoal is lit and spread out; for moving the hot grate, it names grill tongs or a similar tool. The food goes onto the grate only once the charcoal is covered in ash. As protection against unintended overheating, the manufacturer recommends a layer of aluminium foil in the charcoal container.
According to the quick-start guide, charcoal can get hotter than 800 degrees, and you do not need a large quantity for great heat. Everdure does not state what temperature the CUBE reaches without the hood. The guide values in the quick-start guide (upper vent open 230 to 290 degrees, half open 205 to 260, closed 175 to 230) apply only with the cooking hood and built-in temperature display; according to the manufacturer, the display often reads lower than the temperature at the grilling surface.
According to the quick-start guide, heat zones on the CUBE come from the position of the charcoal once it is covered with a layer of ash. For indirect cooking, you push the charcoal to the sides and leave an area free; the quick-start guide describes this for the model with the cooking hood, where it also adjusts the upper vent opening. Without a lid, heat reaches the food mainly as radiation from below and as rising hot air, and it decreases with distance from the embers. That is why grate height matters: the lower grilling level sits closer to the charcoal and, according to the quick-start guide, leaves up to 13.5 cm of space under the cooking hood, while the higher one keeps the food further from the charcoal. The quick-start guide mentions slow cooking at low temperature (low and slow) only for the CUBE 360, using the higher level.
On size: for the CUBE, Everdure states 670 cm² of grilling area on everdure.com. Weber gives 1,035 cm² for the Go-Anywhere and also names a grilling area of 42 × 26 cm, which would work out arithmetically to 1,092 cm². At 670 cm², the CUBE has just under two thirds of the 1,035 cm².
Can the CUBE go on the balcony or on a table?
The manual does not mention the balcony. It requires operation outdoors in a well-ventilated place, at least 250 mm distance from all highly flammable materials and any flammable surface, and it forbids grilling under overhanging parts of buildings or overhanging branches. You need to check for yourself whether your tenancy agreement allows charcoal on the balcony.
There is also note 23: the immediate surroundings must be free of combustible materials, and the varying smoke development of solid fuels must be taken into account when setting up. According to note 6, the grill is intended for operation on a raised work surface or on the ground. The surface must be level, large and stable enough and withstand temperatures 80 degrees above the outside temperature; at 20 degrees outside, that would be 100 degrees. On a table, Everdure advises on everdure.com a stone tile or something similar as heat protection.
We summarise the legal position on tenancy agreements and house rules in the guide Grilling on a balcony. It also explains why we consider electric grills the least conflict-prone choice on a balcony.
Safety and care according to the manual
The manual has 26 numbered safety notes and a warning box. Here is an excerpt; the manual itself remains authoritative.
According to note 16, burning solid fuels produces toxic gases that can lead to death. You therefore do not operate the CUBE indoors and do not bring it inside until the fire has gone out completely. As a general rule: glowing charcoal releases carbon monoxide, a colourless and odourless gas.
Note 17 forbids fuels impregnated with accelerant and accelerants of any kind, and for lighting or relighting also methylated spirits and petrol; only firelighters complying with EN 1860-3 are permitted. Because charcoal burns for varying lengths of time and at varying intensity, note 11 recommends not leaving the grill unattended for more than 5 minutes during use. According to note 3, children aged 12 and over and people with physical, sensory or mental limitations or without experience may use the CUBE, provided they are supervised or instructed in safe handling; children and pets keep a safe distance during operation, heating up and cooling down. Among other things, the warning box on page 6 says that no objects are to be placed on or leaned against the appliance and that no chemicals, flammable substances or aerosol cans are to be stored nearby.
The CUBE is not extinguished: according to note 19, you let the solid fuel burn out naturally and add no liquid to the charcoal in the grill. You must not move it during use, nor while the charcoal is still glowing, because hot ash, charcoal particles, unburnt fuel and hot grease and oils can escape, and the accessible parts are then still very hot. It is lifted only by the side carry handles.
You remove the ash only once the charcoal has cooled completely; the quick-start guide gives at least two hours for this, described for the model with the hood. Note 5 warns that the charcoal can keep glowing for a very long time and recommends putting the ash first into a non-combustible container made of metal or ceramic before it is doused with water and disposed of correctly. The quick-start guide reverses the order: lift out the charcoal carrier and catch tray, add a small amount of water against the residual heat, then tip the ash into the non-combustible container. According to note 21, you never dispose of hot ash or hot fuel where it could be stepped on or start a fire, and never dispose of solid fuels or ash before they have gone out completely.
In the event of a grease fire, according to note 9 you remove the food if possible and let the fire burn out. According to the note, you prevent grease fires by cleaning the inner housing and charcoal container thoroughly of grease and oil, not collecting ash in the inner housing and emptying the container after each use.
For wet cleaning, the CUBE must have cooled down; according to page 8, you remove the coarse residues with a scraper while the grill is still warm. You must not immerse the grill in water; according to note 4, only the removable grates, charcoal container and rack, and the storage tray may be immersed. After grilling, the manual names five steps: remove residues with the scraper while the grill is still warm; remove grease and meat residues inside after taking out the grate, wearing protective gloves; remove residues from the charcoal container and housing; change the aluminium foil so the grill stays clean and grease fires are avoided; soak the grate and utensils in hot soapy water, dry thoroughly, store dry, and cover the grill or store it indoors. You treat the cooled and cleaned grate with a little cooking oil so that it does not rust.
You clean the inside of the charcoal container with water, mild detergent and a sponge or soft scouring pad; baking powder on a wet sponge loosens stubborn residues, and abrasive cleaners are off limits. On everdure.com there is the added advice to avoid cleaners containing phosphoric acid. You clean painted surfaces and plastic on the outside with a mild household cleaner and a clean cloth and then dry them well; you test the cleaner on a small spot first. You never use paint thinner or solvents, and you never pour cold water over hot surfaces.
Store the CUBE dry and not exposed to the weather; outdoors it must be covered with a protective cover, and the grilling surfaces are cleaned beforehand. At the start of the season, you retighten the screws if necessary (page 13).
Accessories and running costs
On the German page, Everdure lists a cooking hood for the CUBE (HBCUBEHOODB, black, €80.00). It is a lid set with a lid thermometer and a fully adjustable air outlet and is meant to upgrade an existing CUBE to the CUBE 360; the page carries the note “Lieferbar ab Q2/2023” (available from Q2/2023). The CUBE carry bag (HBCUBEBAG, black canvas) is priced there at €130.00, and on everdure.com Everdure recommends a travel bag for protection during transport and storage.
The accessories list on the product page also includes, among other things, leather gloves, a silicone glove (heat-resistant up to 230 degrees), tongs, a fork and a grill apron; on everdure.com there is a Hibachi Mesh Grill.
Running costs come from charcoal and firelighters; in addition there is aluminium foil for the charcoal container and cooking oil for the grate. A calculation per grilling evening is not possible: there is no manufacturer figure for consumption per load, and we did not collect charcoal prices. Everdure recommends 100% natural charcoal and eco firelighters.
What the manufacturer does not state, and where sources contradict each other
The following remain open: the grilling area in the German documentation (it gives neither an area nor grate dimensions), a number of people, maximum temperature and heat-up time without the cooking hood, the burn time of one load, the material of the housing, charcoal container, charcoal rack and grate in detail (porcelain enamel is named for the bowl, chrome for the grate and handles, bamboo for the tray; whether the charcoal container is enamelled is stated nowhere), origin and country of manufacture, a certification mark or standard for the appliance itself (EN 1860-3 appears only for the firelighters), the dishwasher safety of individual parts, and the warranty period. The manual does not say which product it means by the protective cover for outdoor storage. Why the prices differ (€150.00 at everdure.de, approx. €239 in our price box), we cannot explain from the sources. There is also no spare parts list: the manual’s parts list has no spare part numbers, and everdure.de gives a spare parts list with numbers only for the CUBE 360.
Where sources contradict each other, we follow the manual. Under technical data, the German product page gives 384 mm width, 224 mm height and 316 mm depth; the same figures appear for the CUBE 360, while the manual and everdure.com agree on 425 × 347 × 230 mm. Amazon’s catalogue dimensions (around 59 × 61 × 122 cm) match none of these figures. The manual is also old: the handbook carries the number CUBEDE 27/2017/04, and according to the file metadata the PDF was created in October 2017.
The Amazon bullet point that the grill bowl can also be removed contradicts the one-piece bowl on everdure.com. Every source documents the grate height differently: everdure.com speaks of three levels, the quick-start guide of a lower and a higher grilling level, the manual of four grate supports, and the parts list of eight. Eight supports fit arithmetically with two levels of four each; that is our reading.
What else comes into question?
We compare the CUBE with three siblings from our catalogue: a portable charcoal grill with a fan, one with a lid and a free-standing grill from the same brand.
| Model | The difference | Price | Our score | Choose this if |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Everdure CUBE (this one) | No lid, firelighter instead of fan | approx. €239 | 8.6 | you want to grill without electricity and batteries and can manage with direct heat |
| LotusGrill G340 | Fan at the embers, low-smoke according to the manufacturer | approx. €179 | 8.8 | you want to grill with as little smoke as possible at the table or on the balcony |
| Weber Go-Anywhere | Lid with two vent sliders | approx. €95 | 8.3 | you want a portable charcoal grill with a lid for under €100 |
| Everdure FUSION | Electric ignition via heating coil, stand | approx. €384 | 8.9 | you have a fixed spot with a power socket and want to start without a firelighter |
The table is not suitable for a price comparison on the day of purchase: the prices are guide values from our price box, and for the CUBE the manufacturer’s page, at €150.00, is considerably lower. The scores are our editorial assessment based on manufacturer information and catalogue data, not a measurement result.
On the LotusGrill G340, a fan drives the embers, powered by 4 AA batteries or via USB cable. In its manual, LotusGrill gives 3 to 4 minutes until ready for use, counted from lighting with gel. That is a different state from the red glow required before grilling on the CUBE. The grate has a diameter of 32 cm, and according to the manufacturer the grill weighs approx. 3.7 kg, the CUBE 7 kg.
The Weber Go-Anywhere weighs 6.78 kg and, according to Weber, has a porcelain-enamelled lid with two integrated vent sliders. That is the part the CUBE lacks in its package.
For the FUSION, Everdure gives an ignition time of approx. 10 minutes with the heating coil; like the CUBE, the German manual requires the charcoal to glow red for at least 30 minutes before grilling. It has a grate of 44 × 33.5 cm, holds up to 1.2 kg of charcoal and weighs 37 to 38 kg. It is an appliance for a fixed spot.
When the CUBE fits and for whom it is the wrong choice
If you want to grill quickly after work, you will get further with the G340.
Without a lid, the CUBE is mostly left with direct grilling. If you want to cook slowly at low temperature, you need a lid: the Go-Anywhere or the CUBE with the cooking hood added.
Our assessment of the size: 670 cm² is enough for a small gathering. For the Go-Anywhere at 1,035 cm², Weber states space for 6 burger patties made with the Weber burger press. If you scale that down to the CUBE’s 670 cm² (670 divided by 1,035, times 6), you get just under 4 patties. This rough calculation is ours and ignores the shape and arrangement of the grate.
The CUBE is carried by the side handles. At 7 kg, it is somewhat heavier than the Go-Anywhere and almost twice as heavy as the G340. If you carry it often, take the G340.
On cost: at everdure.de prices, the CUBE with the cooking hood costs €230.00 (€150.00 plus €80.00). With the price box value of approx. €239, it would be approx. €319. According to our price box, the Go-Anywhere with lid is approx. €95. If you need a lid and watch your budget, you end up with the Weber. In our assessment, the CUBE is worthwhile if a bamboo tray and a food-safe tray in the package are worth something to you and you want to grill without batteries and mains power.
The CUBE is the wrong choice for groups beyond a small gathering and for tenants whose house rules forbid charcoal on the balcony; an electric grill is an option for them. If you do not yet know which type of grill suits you, the Grill Finder helps you narrow it down.
