The Weber smoker box is a flat stainless steel tray with a lid. You fill it with wood chips and place it on the grill grate, and the wood smoulders instead of burning openly. A gas grill burns gas rather than wood, so no wood smoke arises there on its own; the box makes up for that. Our price box lists it at approx. €22.
We have not handled the box and have not smoked anything with it. Our basis is Weber’s product page for item number 7576 (retrieved on 14 October 2026), two Weber articles on smoking, Weber’s warranty page, the Amazon catalogue entry as of 5 October 2026 and the product photos. Prices and ratings of the comparison products come from our catalogue. We mark our own conclusions as such.
Design: a perforated tray with a lid
Weber lists the box under item number 7576 and calls it a stainless steel smoker box. Among the smoking accessories, which comprised 21 items on 14 October 2026, it is the only smoker box; there is no second size or colour in the range. Weber’s page does not link to Amazon. Our matching of the Amazon listing rests on the fact that the catalogue gives the model and part number 7576 and the title carries the same number.
According to Weber the material is stainless steel; Amazon describes it as durable and resistant to high temperatures. Weber gives 5.1 cm height, 12 cm width and 24.5 cm depth. Amazon lists 9.8 x 4.5 x 2 inches, converted approx. 24.9 x 11.4 x 5.1 cm, and Weber’s US page 2 x 4.7 x 9.7 inches; the three figures are close together. Only Amazon gives a weight: 1.455 pounds, so approx. 660 g.
The product photo shows a rectangular tray with an open lid hanging on a hinge. Lid and base are perforated, with round holes and elongated slots; the side walls are smooth, and the Weber logo is embossed on the long side. Only the Amazon listing describes the lid and holes: a lid for quickly adding wood chips and ventilation slots for even smoke distribution.
Fine ash can trickle down through the perforated base. We infer this from the photo.
How many chips fit in remains open: Weber gives no volume, but recommends a handful. We do not calculate one from the outer dimensions. They include the hinge and wall thickness, so the usable space under the perforated lid is smaller than the product of length, width and height.
In detail: the process on gas and charcoal
Weber does not explain use in instructions for the box, but in an article about smoking on a gas grill. Among other things, these details come from it: soak a handful of chips in water 30 minutes before grilling. Preheat the grill to at least 250 to 260 °C. Put the drained chips in the smoker box and place the box directly over one of the burners on the grate so that it is exposed to direct heat. Close the grill lid, wait until smoke develops, and then reduce the heat to 130 °C, which Weber calls the ideal temperature for smoking. On soaking, our guide disagrees with Weber; the reasoning is below in the frequently asked questions.
The product page of the box is more concise: fill in chips, place the box on the grill grate. For the charcoal grill, Weber advises putting it directly on the glowing coals or briquettes. How long a filling smokes is not stated anywhere by Weber; there are only three points in time: on the product page the chips should glow after a few minutes, in the smoker ABC, the second Weber article, the aroma develops after about 15 minutes when the chips are in a smoker box in the cooking chamber, and the gas grill article considers 20 minutes of smoking sufficient.
Our reading of the preheating and the placement in direct heat: wood only smoulders above a minimum temperature, and on a gas grill the heat sits in the burner, not in the cooking chamber. The 130 °C afterwards lie within the range of about 100 to 160 degrees that our guide Smoking on the grill gives for smoking.
According to the guide, the food goes on the indirect side: box over a lit burner, the other burners off or low, the food on the side without flame beneath.
How much smoke does it produce?
Subtle, as Weber itself rates it: in the smoker ABC, Weber describes the smoke flavour of chips like this and classes larger chunks of smoking wood as more intense. The Amazon bullet point on the box, by contrast, promises an intense smoke flavour. We have no measurement for either statement.
The smoker ABC talks about chips in general, the Amazon line about this box with its slots. Given the contradiction, we would go with Weber’s more detailed description, because the Amazon point is a brief catalogue line with the word intense and no figure. That Weber rates the result as subtle is not surprising with a handful of chips either.
As chip varieties, Weber’s product page lists hickory, apple wood, whiskey and Bitburger Premium Pils, plus blends for pork, beef, poultry and seafood. In the description, the page names meat, vegetables, nuts or cheese as food to cook, and in the recipe section additionally a smoked trout. In the guide, hickory counts as strong and spicy and suits pork, ribs and pulled pork; apple counts as mild and slightly sweet and suits poultry, pork and fish.
Does the box fit your grill?
Weber gives the fit as the Q 200/2000 series and larger gas grills, and elsewhere on the page most gas grills. Smaller Weber models, other brands and a minimum grate size remain open; there you measure on your own grill.
The box is also intended for charcoal, as Weber explicitly names gas and charcoal grills. Whether it fits pellet or electric grills or works in a separate smoker oven remains open: Weber does write that the box turns any gas or charcoal grill into a smoker, but does not name a smoker oven as a place of use, and neither does Amazon.
What else is worth considering?
Three entries from our catalogue are listed for comparison, and only one of them is a second smoker box. You can find all accessories in the category Grill accessories.
| Model | The difference | Price | Our rating | Choose this if |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Weber smoker box 24 x 12 x 5 cm (this one) | Weber gives the fit, but no volume | approx. €22 | 8.5 | you have a Weber Q 200/2000 or larger and do not want to check the fit yourself |
| Rösle stainless steel smoker box | Same job, different manufacturer, not tied to any grill series | approx. €12 | 8.6 | you have no suitable Weber grill and weigh the price more heavily than a fit specification |
| Weber Fire Spice Chips Hickory 700 g | Not a box, but an Amazon twin pack of hickory chips (2 x 0.7 kg) as a consumable | approx. €13.58 | 8.5 | you already have or are buying the box and have no chips at home yet |
| Petromax Fire Pot ft6 with feet | Different purpose: cast iron Dutch oven, 9 kg, cooks in the embers | approx. €75 | 9.0 | you want to cook a braised dish for several people instead of smoke flavour |
The prices are guide values from our price box and change. The rating is our editorial assessment based on manufacturer data, not a measured value, and says nothing about smoke strength.
The chips are in the table because they make the box usable in the first place. The Petromax is the overall winner among grill accessories, but no substitute: it cooks in the embers and does not smoke.
Price and chips
Our price box lists the box at approx. €22; on the Amazon page it stood at €21.80 on 14 October 2026, and prices change. In the Weber shop it costs €34.99 including VAT plus shipping according to the product page of 14 October 2026, so around €13 more than at Amazon.
Chips come on top, and what a filling costs remains open as long as Weber says only a handful and gives no weight. In the Weber shop a pack of wood chips of 0.7 kg costs €8.49; the hickory pack (item no. 17624) thus comes to €12.13 per kilo, and further varieties are in the range at the same pack price. The approx. €13.58 on our chips page applies to two bags; one bag costs €8.49 in the Weber shop.
Care and safety
The care note on Weber’s product page reads: wash by hand. Under the product features it says easy to wash by hand. We would take the note literally and clean the box by hand.
The box gets hot in any case: Weber places it on gas in direct heat over a burner and on charcoal in the embers. The product page of the box has no warning notice of its own. On the page of the hickory chips (item no. 17624) the notice reads: use outdoors only and wear heat-resistant grill gloves when operating the grill.
When smoking, according to the smoker ABC you should by all means avoid chemical grill lighters for health reasons; as an alternative, Weber names firelighter cubes without additives.
In general, and this is not a manufacturer statement: grill ash can hold glowing embers for a long time, so empty the box only once the tray, lid and contents have cooled completely. Likewise in general, burning gas and charcoal produces carbon monoxide, which is why these grills belong outdoors. That stainless steel develops heat tint over an open flame is also to be expected in general.
What Weber does not state
Weber’s pages on box 7576 lack information on these points:
- Stainless steel grade (such as 18/10 or 304) and wall thickness
- Maximum temperature of the box in degrees
- Capacity for chips in millilitres or grams, recommended fill quantity and smoking time per filling
- Number, size and arrangement of the holes and slots
- Weight (including whether with packaging), country of origin and place of manufacture
- Fit for Q 100/1000, Go-Anywhere, Traveler, kettle grills, pellet and electric grills and other brands
- Dishwasher approval or dishwasher ban
- Operating instructions or data sheet, plus warnings and set-up notes on clearances, balcony, carbon monoxide, burn risk and ash
- Warranty period and warranty terms
- Year the box was introduced and spare parts such as lid or hinge
- Soaking of the chips (only in Weber’s articles, not on the product page of the box)
When the box fits and when it does not
The box fits if you have a Weber Q 200/2000 or a larger gas grill and occasionally want subtle smoke for dishes that are done in under half an hour anyway; this is how the guide classes chips on gas. Going by the prices on our catalogue pages, getting started costs around €35: approx. €22 for the box and approx. €13.58 for the Amazon twin pack of hickory chips with two bags of 0.7 kg each, without tongs and gloves.
With another gas grill you have to measure yourself with Weber as with Rösle. In that case the price favours Rösle: approx. €12 instead of approx. €22, so around €10 less, with a rating of 8.6 against 8.5.
On charcoal, according to our guide, you do not need the box. There you put chips or chunks directly into the embers, and for long sessions chunks are the better choice: they smoulder for an hour and longer, chips only for about 20 to 30 minutes. Weber does explicitly name the charcoal grill, but for long cooking times in the smoker ABC it relies on larger chunks of smoking wood.
For tenants the box can be the wrong choice, because it deliberately produces smoke. The guide to Grilling on a balcony points out that the tenancy agreement and house rules may restrict or prohibit grilling, and that repeated complaints about smoke or smell can lead to claims for injunctive relief even where grilling is allowed. With a ban in the house rules, the box is out.
If you first want to know whether you like smoke on the gas grill, a foil packet of chips with a few pricks also does the job, which works just as well according to the guide. In our assessment the box pays off once you smoke more often, because it stays usable after emptying. Which grill suits fuel, budget, place of use and number of people is narrowed down by the Grill finder.
Before buying, measure whether enough free grate remains over a burner on your grill.
