The Rösle smoker box is a flat stainless steel tray with a lid. You fill it with wood chips, place it on the grate over a gas burner or in the embers, and the wood smoulders instead of burning openly. There is no more technology in it than that: no thermometer, no control. Our price box lists the box at approx. €12.
We have not held it in our hands and have not smoked anything with it. The basis is Rösle’s product page for the box (item 250076, retrieved on 14 October 2026), Rösle’s pages on the sister boxes, the smoking chips and the grill guarantee, the Amazon listing from the same day and the product photo. Prices and ratings of the comparison models come from our catalogue, and the details on Weber come from Weber’s product page. Where we infer rather than quote, it says so.
Tray, lid and six slots
Rösle lists the box under item number 250076; the old number is 25076, the EAN 4004293250766. It consists of a smoking tray and a lid, both made of 18/10 stainless steel. For stainless steel, the figures usually stand for roughly 18 per cent chromium and 10 per cent nickel in the alloy. Amazon describes the surface as matt.
According to Rösle, the box measures 21.5 x 13.5 x 3.5 cm (length, width, height), weighs 0.66 kg and holds approx. 750 ml. On the English Rösle page, 26 x 14 x 4 cm is given below that, without the note that it refers to the packaging; if you read only that page, you may think the box is larger. The German page assigns those figures to the packaging.
The product photo shows a flat, rectangular tray. The lid has six elongated slots in two rows of three, and no hinge is visible. In Rösle’s running text the slots do not appear; only the image description calls them ventilation slots. Without a hinge, the lid is a loose part that you can only lift off when hot with tongs or a glove. We infer this from the photo; Rösle does not state it that way.
As a fill, Rösle names wood chips, wood pellets or smoking dust. According to Amazon, the scope of delivery is the smoker box alone; you buy the chips separately.
In detail: procedure on gas and charcoal
Rösle explains use in a few sentences on the product page; Rösle does not link a manual or a data sheet for it. You put about a handful of wood chips into the tray and close the lid. On a charcoal grill, you place the box in the glowing coals with gloves or tongs and put the grill grate on top. On a gas grill, it has to sit directly over a burner on the grill grate. As soon as smoke comes out of the box, you put the raw, marinated meat on the grate. The grill lid stays closed and is only opened again towards the end of the cooking time. As its purpose, Rösle describes smoking fish or meat, as is usual in American barbecue.
Rösle names exactly one control for smoke intensity, and that is time: the longer the box stays on the grill, the more intense the smoke note. Rösle does not give minutes or grams.
For gas, Rösle’s text gives a single place: the grate directly over a burner. Under the cast-iron grate, on the burner cover or between the Flavorizer Bars, the box does not appear there. Our derivation of the reason: wood only smoulders once it gets hot enough, and on a gas grill the heat sits in the burner. A place further away delivers less of it. At what distance it becomes too little remains open.
Whether the meat lies directly over the flame or beside it, Rösle also leaves open. Our guide smokes indirectly on gas: the box stands over a lit burner, the other burners stay off or low, and the food lies on the indirect side, at about 100 to 160 degrees.
Smoke is produced by smouldering, that is, with heat and little oxygen, without the wood burning openly. The guide to smoking on the grill names thin, bluish smoke as the goal; thick white smoke, it says, contains many bitter compounds and makes the food bitter. A closed box with a slotted lid fits this logic: it keeps the chips away from the open flame and lets only a little air in. That is our inference from the design, not a manufacturer statement and not a measurement.
On quantity, the guide on too much smoke helps. It names a large load of chips as a cause of dense white smoke, because it smothers itself, and advises a small handful. That matches Rösle’s handful and suggests that the 750 ml is a capacity and not a fill recommendation. Rösle does not say this explicitly.
The fact that the grill lid stays closed until the end of the cooking time speaks, in our reading, for dishes where one fill is enough. For pulled pork or anything else that sits in the smoke for hours, Rösle describes neither a refill nor a different procedure.
Do the chips need to be soaked first?
No. Rösle’s page on the box says nothing about soaking, and for the BLAZEFLAME box Rösle explicitly names dry chips. Our guide considers soaking unnecessary.
The reason lies in the water: wet chips first give off steam, because the moisture has to evaporate before the wood starts to smoulder. This delays the start of smoke and brings no additional flavour, as the guide explains. Rösle’s page on the smoking chips also mentions neither soaking nor steeping. The guide instead recommends using dry chips in small portions and adding more as needed.
Three boxes, three item numbers at Rösle
Rösle has three smoker boxes, and the number decides which one you get. The standard box 250076 is the one this is about. Alongside it, the range includes the VIDERO smoker box (item 250238, with ALL-/EPICFLAME added in the page title) and the BLAZEFLAME smoker box (item 251077). Both have a lid hinge, are long and narrow (40.8 x 6 x 3.7 cm and 34.5 x 6.5 x 3.5 cm) and each cost €29.95 in the Rösle shop. The standard box is listed there at €24.95, so €5 less.
Rösle names the VIDERO box as suitable for all VIDERO and ALLFLAME grills except Kitchen and Island, and the BLAZEFLAME box for all gas grills of the BLAZEFLAME series. For the standard box, Rösle names no series, only charcoal and gas grills in general. That is the core of the difference: with the specialist boxes, Rösle sets the fit; with the standard box, you measure yourself.
On the Amazon page of the standard box, the style selection also lets you choose the VIDERO box, at €23.99 on 14 October 2026. If you have a Rösle grill, check the number before you click.
What else comes into question?
Three entries from our catalogue are listed for comparison, and only one of them is another smoker box. You will find the other items in the grill accessories category.
| Model | The difference | Price | Our rating | Pick this one if |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rösle smoker box, stainless steel (this one) | Lid with six slots, capacity approx. 750 ml according to Rösle | approx. €12 | 8.6 | you want to rely on Rösle’s handling details and check the fit yourself |
| Weber smoker box 24 x 12 x 5 cm | Longer and taller (24 x 12 x 5 cm according to the catalogue), Weber names suitable grills but no volume | approx. €22 | 8.5 | you have a Weber Q 200/2000 or a larger Weber gas grill |
| Axtschlag smoking chips hickory 1000 g | Not a box, but 1 kg of hickory chips in grain size 4 to 16 mm | approx. €10.49 | 8.9 | you already have a box and are buying more chips |
| Petromax Feuertopf ft6 with feet | A different device: cast-iron Dutch oven, 9 kg, cooks with embers instead of smoke | approx. €75 | 9.0 | you would rather put your accessory budget into a dish from the pot |
The prices are guide values from our price box and change. The rating is our editorial assessment based on manufacturer data, not a measured value, and it says nothing about smoke performance: Rösle has no figure for that.
Weber’s own product page for the smoker box no. 7576 lists 24.5 x 12 x 5.1 cm, stainless steel, hand cleaning and a fit for the Weber Q 200/2000 series and larger gas grills. The page mentions neither a lid nor a capacity. We conclude from the name and dimensions that our Amazon listing is exactly this number; nobody has confirmed it to us.
According to our price box, the Weber box costs approx. €22, so around €10 more than Rösle’s, with a rating of 8.5 against 8.6.
Axtschlag’s chips belong in the box; they do not replace it. They are in the table because they are the item that regularly comes up after buying the box. The Petromax Feuertopf ft6 is the overall winner in our grill accessories category and a different device from the smoker box. It is listed here because both compete for the same accessory budget, not for the same task.
Price, chips and guarantee
On the Amazon page on 14 October 2026 there was an offer at €11.50, 50 cents below our price box. The seller and shipper there was a marketplace retailer, not Amazon itself, and seven new offers in total started at €11.49. In the Rösle shop the box costs €24.95 including VAT plus shipping (retrieved on 14 October 2026). That is more than double, and none of our sources explains the gap.
Then there are the chips, the ongoing cost. Rösle sells its own smoking chips in seven varieties (beech, hickory, apple, cherry, whisky oak, rum cherry and gin apple), 750 g each for €9.95 in the Rösle shop. That is €13.27 per kilo. For the beech variety, Rösle describes the wood as 100 per cent natural, without bark and without chemical additives. Axtschlag’s hickory chips cost approx. €10.49 per kilo on Amazon, and so €2.78 less than the Rösle chips in the Rösle shop; both prices come from different shops, and with Rösle shipping is added. Rösle does not tie the box to a brand. What a fill costs cannot be calculated as long as Rösle says only handful and gives no weight.
On the guarantee: under guarantee, the Amazon page lists a 20-year Rösle manufacturer guarantee and refers to further technical information for the exact description; we could not view that description. Rösle’s page on the box states no guarantee period.
Rösle’s voluntary grill guarantee (short version of the terms, as of June 2026) applies from the purchase date of 1 February 2026 for selected grill series. For accessory parts, bundle components and free extras, there is expressly no claim there. The durations are given in Rösle’s press release from April 2026: up to 20 years only for the BLAZEFLAME gas grill series, up to 10 years for EPICFLAME and the AIR charcoal grill, up to 7 years for ALLFLAME, up to 5 years for SPORT/SMOKER. A smoker box belongs to none of these series. We find no document at Rösle that assigns a guarantee period to the box, and so would not read the 20 years as a reliable commitment. The statutory warranty is unaffected by this; according to Rösle, it applies at all times.
Cleaning and heat
According to Rösle, the box is not dishwasher-safe; the data field reads dishwasher suitability: no. Rösle writes the same for the VIDERO box, and for the BLAZEFLAME box Rösle recommends gentle hand cleaning so that it lasts long. For the standard box, cleaning instructions are missing. We would apply the hand cleaning of the sister box here as well.
The box gets hot in any case, because it stands over the burner or in the embers. Rösle mentions gloves or tongs only for use on charcoal. We would use both on the gas grill too, because the box stands directly over the flame there. Rösle writes nothing about ash, cooling down or disposal. As a general rule for grill ash: it can contain embers for a long time. Empty the box only once the tray, lid and contents have cooled completely. Equally as a general rule for any gas and charcoal grill, with or without a smoker box: operate it outdoors only, because carbon monoxide is produced during combustion.
That stainless steel develops heat tint over an open flame is generally to be expected. Rösle makes no statement on this.
What Rösle does not state
For the standard box 250076, we find no information at Rösle on:
- a manual or a data sheet as a document
- safety instructions: minimum distances, positioning, carbon monoxide, cooling down, ash
- maximum temperature, wall thickness and material number of the stainless steel
- smoking duration per fill and chip quantity in grams
- grill models and grill sizes the box is intended for
- food safety suitability or a certification of the stainless steel
- the country of manufacture at Rösle (the Amazon product details list China as the country of origin; that is a catalogue entry by Amazon, and Rösle does not confirm it)
- the year of market launch
- the scope of delivery at Rösle (under Included in the delivery, Amazon lists only the smoker box)
- a spare lid or spare tray available individually
- what the weight refers to, with or without packaging; the Amazon page lists 640 g
Then there is a document that Amazon links on the listing as safety information (PDF). It describes a firebox door, air slide and chimney sweep, so a stove, carries no recognisable sender and says nothing about the smoker box. We therefore did not use it as a manufacturer statement.
When the box fits and when it does not
The box fits if you occasionally want to produce smoke on a gas grill and can manage with Rösle’s procedure: chips in the box, box over a burner, lid closed. Our guide Gas or charcoal? rates smoke flavour as low to none on gas and as pronounced on charcoal. The box targets that gap. How far it closes the gap depends on the chips and the heat, and figures for that are missing.
If you have a Rösle grill from the VIDERO, ALLFLAME or BLAZEFLAME series, take the specialist box that Rösle names for your series.
If you own a Weber Q 200/2000 or a larger Weber gas grill, Weber’s box is the one where the manufacturer states the fit. The extra cost compared with the Rösle box buys you that statement, not a documented advantage in smoke performance.
For the balcony, first check the house rules to see whether your gas grill may produce smoke at all. Our guide to grilling on a balcony points out that repeated complaints about smoke or smell can lead to injunction claims even where grilling is allowed. A smoker box deliberately produces more smoke. For tenants whose tenancy agreement or house rules prohibit open fire or smoke, it is the wrong choice.
If you want to smoke for several hours, pulled pork or ribs for example, you need answers that Rösle leaves open: how long a fill smokes and when you add more. For long sessions, our smoking guide relies on chunks, meaning fist-sized pieces of wood, on charcoal, in a kettle grill or kamado. Which device fits is narrowed down by the grill finder by fuel, budget, place of use and number of people.
And if you only want to try it once: our smoking guide considers a smoker box not essential and names a foil parcel with chips and a few punctures as a substitute that works just as well. In our assessment, the box is only worth it once you smoke more often. It stays usable after emptying, while the parcel goes in the bin.
For getting started, you can count on around €22 on Amazon: the box at €11.50 plus one kilo of Axtschlag hickory chips at approx. €10.49, without tongs and gloves. Whether enough grate space remains over your grill’s burner for the box is something only you can measure, because for gas Rösle names only this one place.
