The Severin PG 8541 is the right choice for anyone looking for an inexpensive freestanding electric grill with a lid for the balcony, who has a socket with residual-current protection within reach and can live without a documented maximum temperature. If you want to sear hard or grill for larger groups, the Rommelsbacher BBQ 4000 (up to 300 °C) and the Landmann EG-II-590 are devices whose manufacturers state temperatures.

What the PG 8541 is

The PG 8541 is a freestanding electric grill with a round plate and a lid. The manufacturer is SEVERIN Elektrogeräte GmbH from Sundern; the company page gives 1892 as the founding year, founded by the blacksmith Anton Severin. In the range, the device is part of the eBBQ Grills series as a “barbecue electric grill, freestanding grill with lid”, and the data sheet and spare parts page list it under article number 10008541000. It needs 230 V on a Schuko plug and delivers 2,000 W according to the data sheet.

The catalogue photo shows a round, black body on a central pole, below it a round shelf with hollows, and at the very bottom a star-shaped foot. The lid hangs upright behind the plate. On the plate a ribbed section can be seen, and the rest looks smooth; on the right a cable leads to the controller.

According to our price box, the grill costs approx. €99 at Amazon. Our information comes from the product page on severin.com (retrieved on 14 October 2026), from the data sheet (as of 7 March 2026), the instructions (footer 09/26) and the warranty statement, plus the Amazon catalogue. Where the sources contradict each other, we give both values.

Plate, lid, controller

According to the product page, the grill plate is made of die-cast metal with a ceramic coating. The diameter is 41 cm, and the data sheet gives the area as approx. 1,320 cm². Smooth and ribbed surfaces are on the same plate. Severin describes the coating as durable, scratch-resistant and easy to clean.

The lid is made of metal, has a cool-touch handle and a thermometer that, according to the instructions, shows the temperature in the cooking chamber. You take it off and hang it on the grill tray with the hook, as it stands in the photo; Severin says it can be used as a windbreak.

You set the temperature on a controller that is plugged into the device as a thermostat plug with a connecting cable. Amazon describes it as a removable, multi-level adjustable thermostat with a pull-off aid. The instructions know the positions MIN and MAX: to grill, you turn to MAX, the indicator light comes on and the plate heats. You can grill with the lid open or closed and change the temperature on the controller as needed.

Otherwise the equipment is sparse. In the data sheet, on/off switch, automatic shut-off and timer are each listed as no; yes appears there only for the indicator light. The product page also lists display, Wi-Fi, app control and BoostZone as no. Switching off therefore remains a manual job.

Stand, dimensions and weight

The grill arrives in pieces. According to the instructions, the feet click audibly into the base, a fixing plate is screwed on, two stand parts (long and short) are screwed together, and then come the shelf, grill tray, grease drip tray and grill plate. The shelf sits on the base frame below the grill tray and, according to the product page, is intended for grilling utensils. The grill has no side tables, so if you want to put down plates and tongs next to the plate, you need a side table.

The data sheet gives 52 x 44 x 96 cm (W x D x H); the product page gives the same values in a different order (96 x 52 x 44 cm, H x W x D). The Amazon catalogue lists 42 x 58 x 96 cm, and we follow the manufacturer. The working height is approx. 83 cm according to the data sheet and 82 cm according to the product page. For weight, Severin has two values: 6.64 kg net in the data sheet, 6,732 g on the product page. Amazon calculates with 15.01 pounds, which is around 6.81 kg. We stay with 6.6 to 6.8 kg.

Colour: matt black, material according to the data sheet plastic and metal. The power cable is 195 cm long (product page: 1950 mm), and the promotional text in the data sheet rounds up to 2 m. The product page lists non-slip rubber feet as no. On smooth tiles we would therefore check the stability before the first grilling session, because according to the instructions the grill must stand securely with its base frame.

In detail: what a single heating plate can do

The instructions say nothing about separate heating zones; they describe one controller and one thermostat connection on the plate. We read that as a single heating unit. The manufacturer does not word it that way; it is our conclusion from the controller and connection.

The food lies directly on the plate and cooks by contact. A crust only forms when the surface gets well above 100 °C, and as long as water evaporates on it, that holds it at around 100 °C. Cold meat also draws heat out of the plate. How quickly it recovers depends on the power, mass and material of the plate.

Worked out ourselves: 2,000 W on approx. 1,320 cm² is around 1.5 W per cm². For the Rommelsbacher BBQ 4000, it is 2,200 W on 1,500 cm² according to the manufacturer, also around 1.5 W per cm². That says nothing about the actual plate temperature. Rommelsbacher states an adjustable temperature of up to 300 °C for its device, while Severin advertises fast heating and high temperatures but gives neither minutes nor a maximum temperature. Whether the PG 8541 browns steaks strongly can therefore be neither confirmed nor ruled out from the manufacturer data.

With the lid closed, the grill works with an oven effect according to the instructions: higher temperatures and, as Severin calls it, indirect grilling. What indirect means here remains open: the food lies on the heating plate, and the grill has no switched-off side like a gas grill. How direct and indirect heat relate is explained in the guide Direct and indirect heat.

According to the data sheet, a removable grease drip tray collects the escaping fat, and Severin credits the integrated grease drain with low-smoke, low-odour grilling. An electric grill has no embers for fat to drip on. But fat that stays on a hot surface burns there too and smokes. How much smoke the device produces in use is not documented by any of our sources.

Is the PG 8541 allowed on the balcony?

The manufacturer advertises it for the balcony, but that is not an approval. In the data sheet, Severin calls the grill ideal also for grilling on the balcony, and the instructions permit it exclusively outdoors. The manufacturer says nothing about tenancy agreements and house rules; there, what your contract says applies.

The legal situation is explained in the guide Grilling on a balcony. For placement, the instructions require that you do not put the grill directly against a wall or in a corner and that you remove easily flammable objects from nearby. They give no minimum distance in centimetres. The surface must be level, heat-resistant and splash-proof, because with fatty food splashes are unavoidable according to the instructions. Whether a wooden or plastic balcony floor can stand that, you have to judge yourself. The grill must not be used indoors; the product page lists outdoor as yes and indoor as no.

The power: the grill belongs on a properly installed earthed socket whose voltage matches the rating plate, and it should run via a residual-current device (RCD) with a trip current of no more than 30 mA. If the cable does not reach the socket and a cable reel comes into question, the instructions say: it causes a loss of power, must be fully unwound, otherwise the cable can heat up impermissibly, and in a protected outdoor area it must be suitable for that. The cable must lie so that there is no tripping hazard and it does not touch hot parts, and it is checked regularly for damage; if it is damaged, you do not use the grill.

According to the instructions, you may not leave it standing outside permanently: they require that it not be stored outdoors or in open places, because the weather can affect it. Severin gives no protection rating or weather resistance, and the manufacturer lists no cover for the PG 8541; in the accessories range, covers exist only for SENOA, SEVO GT and SEVO GTS. On the balcony you therefore need a dry place indoors where the cooled grill can stand.

Safety and care according to the instructions

You operate the grill only under supervision. Before use, you check the device and accessories for defects and check that the grease drip tray is properly inserted. If the device has fallen on the floor, damage can be invisible from the outside; in that case you do not put it into operation and contact customer service. The warning triangle in the instructions marks accessible surfaces and the grilling surface as very hot in operation; during and after operation you touch the grill only by the handles. You never move it in operation, and to carry and put it away you let it cool. It must not be operated with charcoal or similar fuels, it is not intended for operation with an external timer or a separate remote control system, and the thermostat plug must be the original.

On children, the instructions say: children aged 8 and over and persons with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities may use the grill only under supervision or after instruction, if they have understood the dangers. Children must not play with it. Children carry out cleaning and user maintenance only from age 8 and under supervision, and children under 8 should be kept away from the device and the connecting cable. Packaging material is to be kept away from children. The grill is intended for household and similar uses: staff kitchen areas in shops, offices and similar working environments, farms, clients in hotels, motels and other typical residential environments, and bed and breakfast establishments.

You pull the mains plug after every use, in the event of a fault during operation and before every cleaning. After grilling, the controller goes back to MIN, then comes the mains plug, only then the thermostat plug out of the connection, and the grill cools down.

Cleaning is done after every use, only after cooling and with the mains plug and thermostat plug pulled. Metal sponges, steel wool and abrasive cleaners are off limits according to the instructions. You wipe the plate with kitchen paper; for heavier soiling you take it off, clean it in washing-up water with a soft sponge and soak it if needed. Afterwards, the plate and especially the thermostat connection must be thoroughly dry, completely so before the next use. You wipe the thermostat only with a slightly damp cloth, and the connecting cable with thermostat plug must not be treated with liquids or immersed in them. You wipe the lid and grill tray with a cloth soaked in washing-up water when needed and dry them, and the grease drip tray goes into warm washing-up water. The individual parts must not be cleaned in the dishwasher. For disposal, the instructions refer, with the crossed-out wheelie bin symbol, to separate collection from household waste; the local authority or the specialist retailer can advise.

Warranty, spare parts and what Severin does not state

Severin gives a voluntary two-year warranty for the PG 8541, in addition to the statutory warranty rights. The warranty statement says explicitly that it is not a durability guarantee. The conditions are new goods and a claim within two years of receipt of the device. If a defect exists at the time of handover, Severin remedies it at its own choice or supplies a new, defect-free device, free of charge; it does not reimburse transport or removal and installation costs.

Excluded are: faulty setup or installation, for example ignoring the safety rules or the instructions; use contrary to the intended purpose and improper operation or stress; external influences such as transport damage, impact or blows and damage from weather; power and voltage fluctuations outside the tolerance limits; ignoring the care and cleaning work according to the instructions for use; wear and tear from use and natural wear. Our reading, not information from Severin: if you let the grill overwinter outdoors against the instructions, the weather and instructions exclusions put you in conflict with the warranty. You can claim it via the retailer where you bought it or directly from customer service.

On service, the manufacturer contradicts itself. On the product page, repair service for the model says “Not available”, the instructions require repairs to the device and connecting cable to be done only by customer service, and the footer of the same page advertises spare parts and repair service at the same time. According to the instructions, you order spare parts from the Service Center or spare parts shop on severin.com. Assigned to the PG 8541 there is a complete thermostat with cable (€30.93 including VAT), marked as sold out on 14 October 2026. Grill plate, drip tray, lid and stand are not assigned to the model. The device itself was also marked as sold out in the manufacturer’s shop on 14 October 2026, while the model page was still online.

In addition, here is what is missing for the PG 8541 in the data sheet, product page and instructions:

  • Heat-up time to grilling temperature (only fast heating as advertising; the 10 minutes in the instructions apply to the first empty run)
  • Maximum temperature, temperature range of the controller and lid thermometer, number of controller levels
  • Actual power consumption; only the rated power is documented
  • Metal of the grill plate, thickness and weight of the plate, shares of smooth and ribbed area
  • Assembly time and tools required
  • Balcony approval and statements on smoke nuisance
  • Country of origin of the grill and manufacturing plant (on the company page Severin describes a production plant in Shenzhen, China; only for the thermostat spare part is China given as country of origin)
  • Market launch; the only date is the Amazon catalogue entry of 28 February 2018
  • Warranty on wearing parts such as the ceramic coating
  • Continuation of the model
  • Assignment to Amazon: none of Severin’s 19 eBBQ pages links to Amazon, and we match the Amazon entry via title, model and article number

What else comes into question?

Model The difference Price Our rating Choose this one if
Severin PG 8541 (this one) Freestanding grill with lid, round plate Ø 41 cm, 2,000 W, no maximum temperature stated approx. €99 8.4 you want an electric grill with a stand for under €100

Rommelsbacher BBQ 4000 Cast-iron grate with 1,500 cm², temperature adjustable up to 300 °C, tabletop grill approx. €183 8.1 you want to sear hard and need a temperature figure from the manufacturer
Landmann EG-II-590 Two heating elements, 3,200 W, 59 x 40.5 cm, 100 to 300 °C approx. €550 9.4 you regularly grill for several people and have a dedicated circuit

Prices are guide values from our price boxes, and the rating is our editorial assessment. The table is not suitable as a performance comparison: plate, grate and trolley are different designs, and for the PG 8541 the temperature figure that could be set beside the others is missing.

At approx. €129, the Severin PG 8597 costs €30 more than the PG 8541, the Rommelsbacher at approx. €183 costs €84 more, and the Landmann at approx. €550 costs €451 more. The whole class is covered in Electric grills compared.

When the PG 8541 fits, and for whom it does not

For the area, a yardstick helps: an A3 sheet measures around 1,250 cm², and the plate is slightly more. Severin does not say for how many people that is enough. The Severin PG 8597 brings at most around 1,350 cm² to the table with 45 x 30 cm, hardly more. Only the Landmann with 59 x 40.5 cm has, by calculation, at most around 2,390 cm², almost double. If you regularly grill for a larger group, you plan the PG 8541’s area in batches; that is our assessment, not a manufacturer statement.

For a steak with a crust, the PG 8541 lacks the documented temperature that Rommelsbacher and Landmann state for their devices.

For space, the placement location counts. The PG 8541 stands on the floor and leaves the table free, while the PG 8597 requires free table space. The Landmann is a trolley measuring 121.5 x 57.5 x 116 cm and, according to the instructions, requires a circuit without other high-power devices.

The PG 8541 is wrong for two groups. The first: anyone who wants a timer because they do not stand at the grill all the time. The PG 8541 has none, while the Landmann has a timer button according to the instructions. The second: anyone looking for a device with assured spare parts supply, because Severin assigns only one thermostat to the PG 8541, and it was sold out. If you are still undecided between electric, gas and charcoal, sort it out with the Grill finder.

If you have a socket with an RCD within reach, a dry storage place indoors and a budget under €100, the PG 8541 is the cheapest entry point in our table.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about Severin PG 8541

Short, clear answers about buying, using and caring for Severin PG 8541.

Which socket and which fuse protection does the PG 8541 need?

An earthed 230 V socket, operated via a residual-current device with a trip current of no more than 30 mA. At 2,000 W and 230 V, the calculated current is around 8.7 A, and one hour at full load equals at most 2 kWh. Because a thermostat regulates the heat, consumption in use is usually lower; Severin gives no figure for it. The plug is a Schuko type E + F (CEE 7/7).

Can I put the PG 8541 on a table without the stand?

Yes, according to the instructions the grill can also be used as a tabletop grill without the base frame, and the product page lists the tabletop function as yes. Severin gives no dimensions or height without the frame. The only guide is the carton with all the parts: 48.5 x 46.5 x 31.0 cm (W x D x H) at a gross weight of 8.37 kg, in each case according to the data sheet.

What distinguishes the PG 8541 from the PG 8598 from the same brand?

The PG 8598 has 2,300 instead of 2,000 W and weighs 9,372 g net instead of 6.64 kg; like the PG 8541 it is a freestanding grill with a lid, listed by Severin as an Electric Outdoor BBQ Grill with stand and lid. In the manufacturer's shop it cost €149.90 on 14 October 2026 (RRP €199.90) and was in stock. Its product page gives two different figures for the grilling area, grill grate diameter 410 mm and 45 x 30 cm in the text, so we leave out an area comparison.

Which fat or oil is allowed on the ceramic plate?

According to the instructions, a little heat-resistant fat or oil, with frying fat, coconut fat and palm fat as well as sunflower or rapeseed oil named. You apply it with a pastry brush or kitchen paper, especially for vegetables or fish; otherwise the coating allows grilling with little or no fat. Oils that are not heat-resistant burn onto the surface and permanently destroy the non-stick effect.

May I put aluminium foil or a grill tray on the plate?

The instructions say never to cover the grill plate completely with aluminium foil, grill trays or similar, because a build-up of heat could destroy the appliance. Partial covering is not regulated. We therefore only report the prohibition and, in case of doubt, would ask customer service before putting a tray on the plate.

What do I need to do before the first grilling session?

Remove stickers and packaging from the plate, clean the plate in hot washing-up water and dry it thoroughly, wipe the other parts with a damp cloth and check that nothing is missing. Then, according to the instructions, you heat the grill for about 10 minutes without food, with the lid closed and on the highest setting, until the inherent smell fades. Slight smoke is possible, and the instructions advise ventilation; the grill is still only used outdoors. The 10 minutes are the first empty run, not a heat-up time to grilling temperature.

Who do I contact if it is faulty?

In a warranty case, you contact the retailer or SEVERIN Service directly, Röhre 27, 59846 Sundern, Germany, telephone (02933) 982-1460, email service@severin.com. The warranty statement requires name, address, contact details, a description of the defect and the purchase or delivery date. So keep your receipt: without a date, the two-year period from receipt is hard to prove.
