A round grill on three legs, without a lid
Relaxdays lists this grill as “Holzkohlegrill Ø 37 cm Dreibein” (charcoal grill Ø 37 cm tripod) under item number 10050868. The same number appears in the Amazon catalogue as the model number, so both retailers sell the same unit. If you want to check with a third retailer, it is best to search for the EAN 4052025508685.
The design is the simplest a charcoal grill can have. A round fire bowl sits on a tripod, a grate hangs above it at one of four heights, and a windshield stands at the edge. There is no hood; the Amazon listing says so explicitly (“Ohne Deckel”, without lid). So you grill directly over the embers, and the construction allows no other mode of operation.
In our price box the grill is at approx. €20 (Amazon page on 20.10.2026: €19.99). In the Relaxdays shop it is delivered free of shipping costs within Germany.
The manufacturer is Relaxdays GmbH from Halle (Saale). We have not handled the grill and have not cooked anything on it. What is written here comes from the manufacturer’s product page, the Amazon catalogue and the catalogue photo.
Bowl, grate and frame: what Relaxdays states
According to the manufacturer, the grill is made entirely of steel, with the material composition given as 100 per cent steel. The fire bowl is enamelled, the grill grate chrome-plated. On the frame, Relaxdays only writes that the tripod lets the grill stand securely on the ground.
The 37 cm in the name is the outer diameter of the whole unit, not of the grate. Relaxdays gives H x D approx. 53 x 37 cm and, separately, approx. 30 cm diameter for the cooking area. The Amazon catalogue, converted, arrives at 53 x 37 x 37 cm and so matches. On weight, the manufacturer’s page says approx. 1.2 kg, and Amazon lists 2.73 pounds, so around 1.24 kg.
For the grate, Relaxdays states four heights: approx. 6, 8.5, 11 and 13 cm. What these figures refer to, whether the bottom of the bowl or a particular fill level, is not stated.
The catalogue photo shows a black bowl with a red windshield that runs around about three quarters of the rim; the front of the bowl stays open. Vertical slots are visible in the shield, in which the grate is apparently hung, and a side wire handle on the grate itself. Below, three struts connect the legs into a triangle. One caveat applies: Relaxdays labels all nine gallery images in its shop “Mit KI erstellt” (created with AI). We do not know whether the Amazon photo is one of them, so we only read hints from the image and no dimensions.
The following points are stated neither on the Relaxdays page nor in the Amazon listing:
- material thickness of the bowl, legs and windshield, as well as the exact design of the shield
- how much charcoal the bowl holds
- ventilation openings or an air vent
- an ash catcher
- maximum temperature and heat-up time
- type of assembly (plugged or screwed), tool requirements and assembly time
- whether the grill can be taken apart again for transport, and the packed size
- carry bag or carry handle
- individually available spare parts such as a second grate
- matching accessories, for example a cover
- cleaning instructions
- country of origin and market launch
In detail: controlling heat without a hood and without an air vent
On a kettle grill you control the embers via vents and the closed lid. Here both are missing. That leaves two variables: how much charcoal is in the bowl and how far the grate hangs above it.
The distance is the quicker lever. According to the manufacturer’s figures, there are 7 cm between the lowest and the highest level. The higher the grate hangs, the less heat reaches the food. How big the difference between two levels is has not been measured on this grill by anyone.
With a 30 cm grate diameter you can still set up a cooler side: push the charcoal onto one half and park finished food on the other half. That is not indirect cooking in the proper sense, because without a hood there is no closed cooking chamber in which warm air circulates around the food. Our assessment: sausages, skewers, vegetables and thin steaks suit this grill, a whole chicken does not.
The charcoal gets air from above, because nothing covers it. Wind also fans the embers, so they burn hotter and faster and throw more sparks. Relaxdays counters this with the windshield, which according to the manufacturer protects against flying sparks and ash. Relaxdays attributes no further functions to it. If the photo is right and the front is open, a simple rule for setting up follows: the closed side of the shield belongs facing the wind.
If fat drips into the embers, flames shoot up. There is no lid that could smother them, so the only help is distance: hang the grate one level higher or pull the food to the edge.
Is 30 centimetres of grate enough for three people?
According to Relaxdays, yes: the cooking area is enough for food for up to three people. We consider that realistic, as long as all three do not expect their first plate at the same time.
By calculation, a round grate with approx. 30 cm diameter has around 707 cm². That is our calculation from the manufacturer’s figure; edge struts and handle are not deducted. Relaxdays itself does not publish a square centimetre figure.
For comparison: the Posten Anker from our catalogue has, according to the Amazon listing, approx. 31.5 cm of cooking area, which gives around 780 cm² and so about a tenth more. Differences like this matter less than how much glowing charcoal lies under the grate. A grate is only hot where charcoal lies beneath it, and if you keep one side free as a resting area, you grill on roughly half the surface.
On the go: 1.2 kilos, but no packed size
Relaxdays advertises it as “bequem mitnehmbar, da kompakt und leicht” (easy to take along, as it is compact and light). At approx. 1.2 kg the grill really is light; according to Amazon the Posten Anker weighs 1.5 kg and the Dripex folding grill 4 kg. It stays bulky all the same: assembled it measures 53 x 37 cm, and whether you can take it apart again into individual parts after grilling is left open by the manufacturer (see the list above). That is fine for a car boot, but not really for a rucksack.
As places to use it, Relaxdays names garden, park, meadow, camping and holidays, and in the running text the patio as well. Whether you may grill in a park at all is regulated by the city in question; many only allow it in designated areas.
For the way home: without an ash container, the ash travels with you in the bowl. As a rule, you only pack up a charcoal grill once the embers and ash have cooled completely, and that can take hours.
Three alternatives from our catalogue
| Model | The difference | Price | Our rating | Pick this one if |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Relaxdays picnic grill tripod 37 cm (this one) | Grate Ø approx. 30 cm at four fixed heights, approx. 1.2 kg | approx. €19.99 | 7.5 | you take a light round grill for two to three people along in the car |
| Posten Anker mini swing grill Ø 31.5 cm | Same design with windshield, according to Amazon approx. 31.5 cm cooking area and 1.5 kg | approx. €16 | 7.6 | you want to save a few euros with the same principle |
| Dripex folding grill with bag | Stainless steel folding grill, according to Amazon folded 31.8 x 2 x 34.3 cm, 4 kg | approx. €19.99 | 7.9 | the grill has to fit flat into a bag or rucksack |
| Grillchef by Landmann swing grill 0542 | Swing grill with chain pull, according to Amazon 152 x 60 x 60 cm | approx. €25.51 | 7.7 | you want to grill standing up in the garden and adjust the grate height with a chain |
The prices are the values from our price boxes and change; the rating is our editorial assessment based on the available data, not a measured value.
The Posten Anker costs approx. €16 in our price box, the Relaxdays approx. €20, and the Posten Anker is slightly ahead in the rating. In construction it is the closest relative: tripod, chrome-plated, height-adjustable grate, windshield. Posten Anker gives its overall size on Amazon as 55 x 36 cm.
With the Dripex the price is practically level, the design is not. According to the seller it folds flat and needs no assembly. In return it weighs more than three times as much.
The Grillchef 0542 costs approx. €25.51 according to the price box and is a different device: a tripod around one and a half metres tall, on which the grate hangs from a chain above the fire bowl. It is no good for taking along, but you grill standing up.
When to choose this grill, and when another
Two or three people, a car and a spot in the countryside where grilling is allowed: that is the situation the Relaxdays is built for.
If you travel on foot or by bike, we would rather go for the Dripex. A packed thickness of 2 cm beats a rigid tripod, even if you carry almost three kilos more for it.
If you mostly grill in your own garden and for four or more people, the Relaxdays is too small. Then a larger grate is worthwhile, and if you like standing at the fire, the Grillchef offers a swing grill at a similar price. Our overview of charcoal grills shows further designs, and the Grill Finder narrows things down by number of people and place of use.
If you want to cook with a lid, meaning roasts, ribs or a whole chicken, an open round grill is out of the question as a rule.
Be honest about the budget. According to Relaxdays, the delivery contents are only the freestanding grill in separate parts, a grill grate and the instructions, with the addition “ohne Deko” (without decoration): the food in the product images is not included. You buy charcoal, firelighters, grill tongs and heat-resistant gloves separately. For what else to consider when grilling on a campsite, see the guide Buying a camping grill.
Care and safety: what is documented
We did not find a downloadable instruction manual. According to the shop, illustrated instructions come with the grill. Read them before the first lighting, because everything Relaxdays prescribes on set-up, distances and extinguishing is probably in there and not available to us.
From the product page there is exactly one sentence on care: the fire bowl made of enamelled steel is easy to clean. Relaxdays has published nothing more on cleaning there, and we add nothing as a manufacturer statement.
What applies in general to any open charcoal grill, independent of this model:
- Use only outdoors. Smouldering charcoal produces carbon monoxide, which you can neither smell nor see, so never use it in a tent, an awning or a garage.
- No liquid accelerants such as methylated spirits or petrol; they can cause flash flames. A chimney starter or solid firelighters are the safe choice.
- Keep your distance on dry grass and under trees, and have water or sand ready.
- Dispose of ash only once nothing is glowing any more, and then in a metal container, never in a paper or plastic bag.
Who is it suitable for?
At approx. 53 cm overall height, the grate hangs at about an adult’s knee height. If you grill standing up, you therefore bend down a long way; if you sit on a blanket, it is comfortably in front of you. That suits a picnic and less so a garden evening.
Our assessment: the Relaxdays is right for couples and small groups who head out into the countryside spontaneously once or twice in summer and do not want to buy a grill that costs more than the food. It is the wrong choice for families who grill in the garden every weekend, and for anyone looking for a grill with a hood.
